Finally found this too! Thank you! I had to search '"dos" game paint monster' and then scroll through a dozen images until this preview looked familiar.
Fun fact: Bookworm, while slang term for someone who likes books, is also a colloquialism for one of two types of book-eating moth larvae. So it makes sense that Benny would become a butterfly (or moth) in this game.

Awww this nearly made me cry i played this when i was tiny word rescue and maths one ,my dad had a dos computer i was like 6 or 7 and im 33 now so emotional seeing this 😍wish id had more exposure to computers after that

Holy shit, the nostalgia. I played these games about 20 years ago back when I was in school, along with Granny's Garden, Mario Teaches Typing, Math Circus, and Paginitzu. I couldn't remember what these two were called though, but I remembered you could kill enemies with slime. So I googled "educational slime video game", and this video turned up.
I laughed out loud when you created Benny's story using the random stolen words from a level. Amazing!
I had no idea anyone else had ever played these games. I thought they were just a fever dream.
I played this and a few others that I sadly cant find or even remember the name of.
OMG I have searched and searched years for this game!! I remember so much as a kid, but never knew the name, only the pictures or sounds. Today marks the day I finally found it, I constantly would search up "1990s educational dos games with numbers" or "dos math games" "dos educational games" or something with numbers, but I finally found you. I had played Word Rescue and Math Rescue when I was a little child. I remember when my cousin and I re-enact Word Rescue at the outside of my house. Haha.

This very much reminds me of the shareware game Pickle Wars. A game I got very young at a local PC shop on floppy. Which was made by the same company Redwood games. I played through that game way too many times to count.

Oh man I completely forgot about this game I had as a kid, but as soon as I saw that loading screen with the purple monster it all came flooding back to me.

I'd trade almost anything to go back in time to when I'd play this game as a kid. Floppy disks, DOS, three kids sitting on a bench in front of the computer. I couldn't even read yet so I'd just watch my big brother and sister play most of the time.
Thanks for bringing this back to me. I needed this moment of nostalgia.

Omg. I have been trying to find this game for almost 26 years. I am from Brazil and I used to play it when I was 5. The year was 1995 and i remember this game being one of the things we had to do on computer. It was very educational cause we could train a little bit of our English too.
I remember these games from 30 years ago. and I even remember playing these games when I was a kid.
Wow I remember my parents getting both of these games for me to help me "learn"... and WOW it's on Steam!

MATH RESCUE! I have always vaguely remembered a game I played as a kid that had a butterfly pour slime on enemies, and thanks to you I've finally figured out the mystery of what game it was! Thank you! :D
I loved this game in elementary school since Math Rescue and Word Rescue were the only games on the computer. so of course instead of the having to do the typing stuff on the computer we would choose to play these games. Awesome Review!

I forgot the name of this game and was searching for my childhood game I grew up.
Finally after 5-7 years of searching I found it during corona crisis xD
Now here's a memory only a few might have. Playing Word Rescue with a black and white monitor, and trying to collect the word items that referenced colours and basically having to guess which shade of grey was which colour lest you trigger extra enemies

Loved these gams when I was a kid! That theme song is eternally burned in my head.
I adored these games when I was younger.
I never had Word Rescue, but I'm pretty sure I had both Math Rescues...most definitely the Plus version. LOVE them, and Treasure Mathstorm, even though math was always my least favorite subject. :P It was mostly the graphics and the environments that were awesome--the candy land was the best, and the ocean, and cave and all.

I loved the background art for these games as a kid. Not a lot of games really got the most out of the EGA palette like these did.

I remember playing these 2 games years ago. They were fun and educational.. well, educational for little kids, but fun to play anyways.
Man, I must say, even if they for elementary gamers, they actually look sort of fun! I could imagine myself doing a playthrough with goofy as hell post-commentary just for giggles! i remember playing Word Rescue and Math rescue in 3rd grade compy lab. :) we mostly always just rushed through the typing 'work' we had to do then went straight on to Oregon Trail.

I loved these as a child, but considering I also watched my siblings play the original Prince of Persia and its requisite bloody deaths, I always had this bad habit of imagining what would happen to the kids if Benny didn't save them like he does, and it was always kind of terrifying in my head as a kid. Thinking back on it, it's just weird. Still, it's nice to see all these nostalgic reviews. XD
Huh, re-watching old LGR vids and just realized @10:31 ... Garbage Trunk? What an interesting thing to teach children. Though, I guess it might make kids who grew up learning from these games easier to spot. "Ooh, a siren, sounds like a Firetrunk's coming." ;p
I remember an elementary teacher copied that floppy for me to play one or both of these games at home. Don't remember which but I played the hell out of these games.
