- Happy Edutainment Month! This week we're taking a look at three Fisher-Price MS-DOS titles: My Grand Piano, Firehouse Rescue and School Bus Driver. Ha, seriously.

I'd like to know what that song is. My guess is that it's some royalty-free trap / dubstep with a killer bassline.

When I was in elementary school, I played the Apple II version of School Bus Driver. I can't find any evidence online that it existed (no images, no videos, no articles, nothing!), but I swear I played it on one of the Apple IIe's that were in our Kindergarten classroom.
Also, this was the first LGR video I ever saw, way back in 2011, because I was looking for evidence that the game itself existed. I was so happy to find this video, and I'm still grateful that you make these types of videos. Keep being awesome, Clint!

I sometimes miss the style of your old videos. Your recent stuff is definitely better quality in every way but sometimes you just want to watch some old DOS game footage and some commentary.

Hehe, yeah, it's surprisingly tough to make a review of games you are really close to. I had planned on reviewing the Duke games all this month leading up to May 3rd, but now that DNF is delayed yet again so are my reviews.

Have you heard of Socrates? It's kind of a console. It was an educational game that plugged directly into your television. There was a keyboard, IIRC. They also released a drawing pad later that you could draw on and your drawing would appear on the TV. My parents got it for me as a kid because my mom's a teacher and she didn't want me having a Nintendo because it wasn't educational. Yeah, I wasn't too pleased with having Socrates as an alternative to Nintendo, but I still enjoyed it. You should look it up. I think you and I are the same age, so you were probably a kid too when it came out (I was born in '86, btw). I'd love to see a review of Socrates by you. It's a pretty cool little program.

I'm glad that somebody here in the comments confirmed that there was a Fisher Price bowling game too! it was, ahem, /driving/ me nuts not knowing if i fever dreamed it, which these games feel like most of the time.
I remember My Grand Piano and Firehouse Rescue, but I also owned 10 Pin Bowling (where you can move 1 pixel to either side and get strikes every single time).
Those were the days.
All the lameness aside, the fireman game's graphics are beautiful (for being what they are). You just don't get such detailed houses in videogames anymore. 😢
LGR, you are famous now and probably won't read this. But I BESEECH thee. There is an old game from the 90s that I remember vaguely. I only remember a few sparse details from it. I want to think the game had something to do with Piano. There was a bird, probably a penguin, who flew an old style plane, like turn of the century crop duster or something. You know, four wings, propeller.
This game always perplexed me, mostly because when I was little I could never get any of these games running properly on the PC, and even when I could I couldn't PLAY them well because I was too dumb. But I remember after the first level or something, it seemed like everything went to hell. Everything was broken, on fire, something was wrong. I couldn't figure out if it was my computer or the game itself, but for DECADES this has bothered me. I've always wanted to find the disc and figure out what it was but I never could. I found almost all of my other PC games from that era, but not that one.
Do you have ANY idea of what it may be?

Edutatinment games can be really weird sometimes. Did anybody but me realise how strangely happy those trapped citizens were that their house was "on fire?"

@ducttapeninja13 Yeah, those are a bit after my time so I've never played or owned any of them. I had games like those shown in this video, CGA and EGA games like Treasure Hunt Math and Oregon Trail and stuff. Perhaps sometime, but not this month!

Thank you so much for making this video. These were the first 3 video/computer games I ever played on the first computer my family got. This brought back tons of memories of my dad and me messing around with the computer, but me not yet realizing how ridiculous these games were since I was around preschool age when we got these.
This was well written. First referencing the wheels on the bus song, then commenting on the animation. Very well done. Great seamless transition.
The School Bus driver was exciting!!! I was playing on computer class when i was with 5 or 6 years!!!

I think the best thing these games taught kids was how to navigate DOS directories and run the programs.
I dare you to perform Sonata In D Major K 491 by Domenico Scarlatti on the Fisher Price piano. No sharps or flats?! Now how can one perform the Black Key Etude by Chopin? I actually had a copy of Firehouse Rescue when I was very young.
That was a blast from the past. I actually grew up with the School Bus Driver "game", haha..
These games were created as part of a proxy war in the cereal industry between General Mills and Quaker Oats (formerly Quaker Mills) which spilled over into the toys & games market from 1969 to 1991. This is the origin of the common funny trivia fact that Quaker Oats made Atari games before the crash; Quaker Oats produced these games also.
Now a days you got Logic Pro X, FL Studio, Roland Virtual Sound Canvas, Roland MT-32, Yamaha's XG Softsynth, and other better midi devices. And get Anvil or whatever just to record midi or to just use for fun then get Virtual Midi Piano Keyboard.
My neighbor actually had the School Bus game on their family computer. Yeah, even when I was 7 it wasn't all that great. We just played Tetris or N64 instead.
My software request would be for Fisherprice to have made a Construx set building game. That would be amazing too play.
My first memories of the Amiga were “First Letters and Words” and “First Shapes”, they utilized the Amiga's voice synthesizer…A jolly bear with the voice of a man that was just kicked in the nuts. I had been searching for them forever because I couldn't remember what they were called. Found it online, popped it into the Amiga and wow was it God awful and easy! But what a blast to the past! If your in for a laugh (its worth it just for the voices) check it out.
Used to have most of these games on 5 1/4 floppy. The schoolbus game got corrupted eventually. I cannot find that for download online. Would it be too much to ask to archive and post that game? Just want to get it back into my collection :)

you should do one of oregon trail thats a great game, fond memories of playing it in school, with my fellow class mates i named into the game being bit by snakes and getting disease and dying, i played the 1992 deluxe version, but i know there older ones, up to you what one you wanna do, or ones. but I think that would be a good game, since it is a "game" that is "educational" also good video on this on as well.
y the fireman guy was smiling in my mind: well, I woke up to go get me a cold pop, and I thought somebody was barbecuing. I said "oh lord, jesus there's a fire!" then I ran, I didn't grab no shoes or nothin', jesus, I RAN out of there. But the smoke got me I got bronchitis. Ain't nobody got time for that! ~ That's some sweet brown for ya!
I know this has nothing to do with the video but, they are re-releasing the Commodore and it will have the original OS and if I remember correctly the company said it will have all the original games on it too. But you can use windows 7 and whatever OS you want. Just thought it was cool and I didnt know if you knew

Clint, do you know of a game where you're a woodpecker, smashing away at a tree, until you uncover a letter hidden inside it? It also had a level where you played as a worm, eating an apple and also uncovering a letter. We had it in school back in the day, I often wondered what it was called.
so they taught kids how to not play the piano, rescue people from houses that are not on fire, and how school bus drivers are fired for being blocked by a cow on the road. man, i never knew living in the past was so much fun.

Will you do the Wisdom Tree games that came out for the PC (SUper 3D Noah's Ark and Spiritual Warfare)? Those can be count as educational (at least they placed random bible quizes in the game).
