  • Hey everyone! I thought I would do a video on why I chose Ross University School of Medicine, and list some pros and cons along the way. These are just my opinions, but if you have any specific questions please leave a comment or message me personally!
    Happy studies!

    My class of '98 had a guy who flunked the Medcat but topped out on the boards & wound up at the Mayo Clinic. It really is up to you about how hard you want to study.

    As a Trinidadian national the Caribbean isn’t a con for me because I was born here and I’ve lived here my entire life but I will say that life in Trinidad is kinda different to life in any other Caribbean country. That’s why I applied to St George’s because it’s a 20 minute flight away from home so it’ll be a bit easier for me. But I can understand that it’ll be an adjustment for North Americans. Although, some people might enjoy the adventure of being in a new place.

      Lane Kelly hey! Being an athlete definitely shows the school your commitment, dedication, and perseverance. A lot of your application will be detailing your accomplishments. I would say it helps some, but it is only a piece of the puzzle for med schools, you have to have a lot of volunteer work , extra curriculars, etc. Hope this helps! 😊

    Hey I hope you're doing well with your prep, i love your channel ! currently preparing for Step 1 hoping to take it on Jan 26th, but i have a question for you, once you do an NBME, how do you go over the missed questions? i find it very time consuming and feel lost half way into reading all the forums out there discussing the answers of the missed questions. any tips?

    • @FromD1toDr
      @FromD1toDr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Good question, the NBME exams are so brutal haha my confidence goes down so much when I finish taking one, but it takes me an entire day for an NBME. I do the exam. which is about 5 hours, take a break, then come back to my answers and review each one. There really is no trick or tips on how to do this, it is just a long process, and remember to take the NBMEs with a grain of salt, I heard the STEP 1 exam is easier than those exams. Good luck in the new year!

    • @FromD1toDr
      @FromD1toDr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! They tailor the basic sciences material to the USMLE Step exams. In both 3rd and 4th semester, your final exam is an NBME exam to help you familiarize yourself with standardized medical school questions and content. You HAVE to pass the NBME COMP exam at the end of 4th semester before sitting for Step 1, which helps you gauge if you are ready for the real thing. Hope this helps!

      For the Canadian match, you have to do the MCCEE Q1, NAC OSCE, and I think they just changed the requirements this year where you don't have to do the MCCEE Q2. This info is all easily accessible on the Health Canada website. No, you don't have to do any of these exams for the U.S match.

      From D1toDr How do Caribbean spots increase? Could you please explain this?

    • @AliA-sb2pd
      @AliA-sb2pd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rachel it’s the same as with any business expansion plan. Adtalem bought Ross, after which they worked to expand residency spots. Caribbean schools often pay hospitals to take their students which is how Rotation spots are made for Caribbean students.
      There was an article about this regarding how SGU was taking rotational spots away from NYU at New York hospitals. SGU paid the hospitals for spots, whereas NYU wouldn’t pay the hospitals. So the hospitals are making more money by taking Caribbean students rather than local US Grads.

    • @FromD1toDr
      @FromD1toDr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for your response Ali, and you are correct in regards to 3rd year core rotations and 4th year electives! Ross has contracts at certain hospitals throughout the U.S that take Ross students during these rotations.
      To answer Rachel's question about the merger next year (taken from Trinity School of Medicine's website-they have great diagrams as well if you want to take a look): there were 3109 DO-only residencies available last year. Assuming all of them remain extant after the merge and opt to meet ACGME accreditation standards, that's an additional 3,109 matches that MD students previously did not even have access to. The DO students were only competing amongst themselves for those spots. Painting an even more sunny picture for MD students, even if DO-trained students match into the same residencies as last year, MD students still come out ahead with greater opportunity.

      Of course it is not a first choice, no one is wanting to give up an acceptance to a U.S or Canadian school and go to the Caribbean. My point being is that if you are denied acceptance in your home country and are still wanting to become a doctor, the Caribbean route is there.
