- PolyMega All in One retro game console is here! As a part of the PolyMega beta test I received my unit last week. In this video we take a close look at the system. Is it really worth $299? How is the emulation? Does it really run Sega Saturn games? Lets find out!

A few notes:
- I was not able to test Input lag. I personally did not 'feel' any lag during my testing. However im told by RetroRGB its sits at around 2-3 frames. For an emulation box this is pretty good. However once i have the equipment i will test this.
- I did not receive any of the modules so i could not test any cartridge games at this time
- I'll definitely follow up with more testing. Let me know what you'd like to see

Me: "God I want one. It looks so cool."
The OUYA on my shelf whispers: "wait for the finished product".
Glad I waited on the OUYA, it seemed like such a promising product but we all know how that went.
@@grn1 I guess I was one of those people who thought it was a piece of shit Android device on announcement, and then was not surprised when it turned out to be a piece of shit Android device on launch. No clue what people expected.
@@odinsplaygrounds "No clue what people expected." Custom frontend that wasn't what Android TV became, Exclusives that didn't suck ass, and a company that wouldn't fall apart at the first gust; something like onlive, but less fucky if you weren't right next door to one of their datacenter PoPs.
I liked my ouya. I had previously purchased the original version of Google tv (both as a standalone tv and as a Blu Ray player) and that platform didn't offer any games. Ouya flopped in part because Google tv flopped completely before it quickly morphed into Android TV. Then games became available so ouya was made completely redundant. A version 2.0 could have been made pretty easily with an improved controller and processor. I think people are overly critical of what the Ouya company accomplished with such little resources. It wasn't perfect but it was actually made and there were some decent games (even if they were just mobile games displayed on a TV).
When Razer bought out the scraps of Ouya they gave me a large discount to upgrade to their Android TV box. And that thing was crap. It did include the Ouya software and all of my game purchases from Ouya which was nice, but the Razer hardware was hot garbage.
The OUYA people had a lot of good ideas, The good ideas just slowly vanished as the console was finally released. It seems alot of cheap shortcuts came along the way as well, All the way down to the controllers being lesser quality. Seriously, the idea of a game system that emulates game systems and allows independent game programmers to design and sell games is a decent idea. The final product was not what it could have been.
I remember getting my Sega Mega Drive for Christmas at 11 and thinking that it was the most amazing piece of technology in the world. I miss that sense of wonder and amazement, but products like this bring that back, if only for a while. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

How bout some honest criticism for once from the select very few individuals who received one "looking at you MVG" holding these people accountable for all their broken promises, poor communication and unending delays. Are you honest or just in their pocket.
David Trenschel - I know! These select few people receive a beta unit, which they paid for and they make a slick looking infomercial for it. MVG was sent a used console. I’d be pissed and want to know why I’m paying a premium for a 2nd hand unit. What’s in it for the testers? Then there’s the people who paid and have waited years. If they’ve got 100 base units ready to go, why do the beta testers get priority? Just send them to the people who bought them. Again I’d be pissed!
The beta is useless except as a stalling device.
@@sloebone7399 I just gave them the option of giving me my unit now and I'll use it to test, do a review on it, send it to a popular retro TH-camr who I already have an agreement with to let them review it and I'll even mention that this is not a finished product and all they have to do is send me the base unit and SNES module that I have already paid for instead of the alternative which would be me demanding a full refund now and them being out that money and sending a unit they have to pay for to a media outlet for review later. They chose to offer me a refund, blamed a pandemic, and then asked me if there was anything else they could help me with. I felt like saying "yeah, you could give me the system I paid you for" but then they informed me that once they put through the refund my pre-order perks would no longer apply if I wished to buy it later. Almost like they realized they were selling these things to cheap at the pre-order price and if they get people to give up on their orders out of frustration they'd make more on it by selling it to someone else at a later date. Oh well, I should get the refund soon.
David Trenschel - Thats very cool what you did and kinda slimey what they did Telling you that you’re going to lose out if you decide to get a refund. Its basically a threat. It’s not like they’ve done anything but lie and break promises for the last three years. It’s pure desperation on their part.
You’ll look back on this soon and thank god you got out when you did. Of course that’s if they actually refund your money.
@@sloebone7399 I can say that I have received my refund and it only took about 4 days which shocked me. At least they did that right. So I bought an EverCade with part of the money and so far I like it.

My original Sega Saturn analog controller has a physical switch for analog or digital. You sure it isn't emulating this? Perhaps that's why you can't have them both simultaneously.
dustisdeadbodies85
Back then you were able to buy 3rd party controllers that could do the job just fine like pelican for example. Makes games like chrono trigger, xenogears and plenty of other games That previously only used the d-pad feel much better.
but aren't both enabled still? I know with duel analog ps1 controller does that in one of its 3 modes
@@TheGamingTree My understanding is that only games that recognize the pad support the controller without switching it to digital mode. Games that recognize it can distinguish between the analog part and the D-pad, so the emulator can't simply map to both.
@referral madness Right, but that one is software-controlled.
That ""RGB filter"" is like darkness haha.... What I can say is that im glad they went with an x86 type board with up-gradable storage. Thats huge will allow for cfw and future tweaks, having the WIFI module means future software updates and cores. For me the module idea for controllers etc was really good. Its just the original media idea makes no sense for some one like me; not sure if others in the same boat as me and not sure if I just get the base console. Both rgb and composite looked really good, very close. Especially rgb, maybe a tiny bit dark but that console seems like a brilliant idea. Thanks so much for answering the multidisc and 4m Saturn question that I had been wondering about. Thanks so much for the great content, always makes me smile
Wow, those filters are really dark.
Agreed. Would be nice to have an option to increase the gamma to offset the interlacing effect!
rgb filters need you to increase you screen brightness, it's part of the setup
if it's already maxed out, maybe your display doesn't get bright enough
some bloom effect with some gama will make them a lot better.

I don’t quite get one thing. If this is an emulation machine, then why do you need some optional “elements”, which raise the price upto 700$?
For real, just build a $300 PC that can emulate more. If you have the physical games anyway, there's no ethical concerns with getting a rom (that there could be graphics packs for) honestly a waste of money
If the hardware was cloned with FPGA like super NT then the price point is justified. Software emulation? I'll stick to the raspberry pi and pc
@Larenus It is emulation, that's one of the first things he says in the video.
Larenus “Game Player” my ass. He CLEARLY says it’s a hardware emulator. My PS3 and PS4 can do the same.
Gurriato YES! It is. That’s just a freakin’ scam of 700$.
Optional addon modules? For that price I kinda would expect it to arrive with everything if I'm honest.
Issue is, it'd either be enormous, not look too good, or both if it included all of the different cartridge and expansion ports
They'd better not charge too much for the expansions though.
@@therealvbw and what makes you think they won't be expensive? Look at the price of a fucking console.
They are not making Games for this system, this is there one shot at glory. it's a One-Shot deal, make as much money as you can before it's over
@@billyrapp7884 He didn't excplicitly say that he thought they won't be expensive, though. He's just saying that he thinks they should not charge TOO much for it to the point where it gets ridiculous.
@@billyrapp7884 One thing that I need to add here:
"Look at the price of a fucking console."
Not sure you understand that a modern console includes a full assembled computer system and graphics, controller, and network interfaces, while one of the expansions for this console is probably just a custom adaptor from the expansion port to a cartridge slot. This uses software emulation. The most technology would possibly be a tiny amount of circuitry to modify signals from the cartridge. Nobody with any sense would charge the same as a full console for an adaptor to a custom port.
@Small Blue But you cant play your original physical games on the Nvidia?
That is the main selling point of the Polymega is to play your original cd-based games.
The RGB and composite filters look really dark in the video - are they actually that dark "in the flesh"?
This is also what I’m scouring the comment section for.
I use scanlines filter in all emulators on PC and yes, It makes the games much more darker depending on the brightness level of the scanlines with 0 or full being very dark which is what I use. On the other hand If the emulator have the option for scanlines thickness like ePSXe software plugin, If you use thin scanlines the screen will be more bright as a result.
Yes its very dark. Gamma boosted scanlines like analogue does it on megasg and supernt is teh gold standard.
Hedders yeah too dark and not even close to the brightness of og hardware on a crt.
Emulated scanlines are always darker that the real ones, also with slg3000
Plz upload as much game tests as you can. Great video, im glad u got a beta unit.
Subscribed because I just found out who you are in the scene. Wowsers. I bow low.
tip: when you're viewing rgb filters, you're supposed to increase your screen's brightness right up, many people don't know this and complain the screen get's darker
Vinicius Moreira THIS! If anyone reads one damned comment, make it this one!
I second this comment! Judging from this video, the filters look good but are way too dark which is fine, but showing everyone on youtube without making mention of this will have many thinking that the filters are crap.
Changing your monitor's brightness is a huge pain in the ass as it screws up settings for others systems or games where you don't use scanlines. Nobody wants to dig into their settings and mess with that just to play a certain game, then have to undo those settings to play another game. Most people want to "set and forget." Also, simply upping the brightness can often screw with the gamma and make subtle color gradations almost impossible to see. A much better solution is to simply supply a setting for scanline strength. 40% to 60% often looks perfect depending on the system. This is how the OSSC does it, Analogue Super NT and Mega SG, plus various other devices, emulators, etc.
@@ScottWozniakAgreed, options like RetroArch will let you boost brightness or gamma on filters like these so you don't have to mess your monitor / TV settings
Looks great. If i had the money i would buy one 👍🏻. No doubt people will moan about the 2/3 frames of delay 🤷🏼♂️🤦♂️ and unfortunately slate or detract from the product. I like the design and the OS. It looks modern but importantly also retro, when you look at it it feels as if its one of those console prototypes we were drooling over in EGM in the early 90s
Everybody's gangsta until you see a fan in the unit
Two actually. One on the CPU one for the housing.
How is the Polymega different to a Intel NUC style PC, Custom x86 powered emulation sounds amazing- but why limited to this custom 'PC'?
I was thinking the same. For the same price you can have a much better custom system
I think the more cost effective way would have been to use a pre-existing miniPC setup (those tiny boxes sold to small businesses and schools and such) with an x86 SoC solution instead of a bulky motherboard.
Those consoles don't need that much grunt to emulate, even with a low-level accuracy-centric approach. A midrange 15W laptop CPU with some rudimentry GPU like the MX250 should do the trick. Even integrated graphics are enough, but would struggle with aggressive upscaling and additional shaders and such.
This box seems overkill for what it's meant to do, but I believe it's part of future-proofing for possible Dreamcast, PS2 and GameCube emulation down the road.
It's way less powerful, even those sub $300 dell laptops would make this thing look like a dinosaur.

It's definitely a gimmick. Remember, the console was conceived as 'Retro Blocks'. The design philosophy was built around these modules instead of built around making a great emulation box.
Not to mention taking up a lot of space as well, if you consider all the modules. And having to swap in and our modules - and it is STILL only emulation that isn't perfect.

They always make scanlines make the image too dark. Things are not too dark when I play on an actual CRT with scanlines, even if it's darker than HDMI but it sure as hell never looks THAT dark unless the TV is ancient.
It's because they just blank every second line so as to simulate a masking grid, but then don't consider the physical nature of the phosphors, which would radiate/bleed out from the centre. Even more annoying if you're used to PAL, because with more vertical lines, there is even less black. 2.4G does not mean "Lag", it means "Possible interference".
Via USB dongle it can introduce input delay, it's pretty variable between devices though and you can get it very low.
@@inverlock Correct, but it is true for any frequency. It can be 433mhz or 5ghz, it will still be there.
@@jflecool Even without interference there's a few extra steps involved to get the signal there as it has to be converted to a radio signal then back into a binary signal. If only the base unit was half the price... 300 bucks is a tough pill to swallow, at least for me.
When I looked it was $399 which is significantly more than the el cheapo Dell laptop that would not only emulate more systems, but emulate them better..
Its probably cheaper than getting the consoles and the cables and adapters to play 1080p
The price makes a little sense since this is supposed to be an AIO, no games released to bring the cost down like modern console releases, but $399 on release date, & no NES module on release is my dealbreaker. Plus its a lot of money for a CD game/backup emulator system.
The only good point is that I don't think you can play the game discs on other emulation devices including a dell laptop. I would have to pay about the same amount of $300 if I were to get a saturn (though already have), ps1 (though I have a ps2), sega genesis and cd, turbogfx and cd, and a neogeo cd. Sure it may cost $200, but they aren't new and can break and I don't know how much I'd have to pay to get these systems modded so I can include english patches. And as said, it has the 4mb expansion pack for the saturn which is at least $50 (CnD). I'm sure in the states is is better to just buy renewed systems but other markets don't have the supply, workers and customers to support going with a configuration that CAN play original discs (sry if some program can play them on laptops). I believe with its new manufacturing with reliable parts, and all the rnd they did to get better support, it's use of original discs and use of patches, (probably extra support for ram and processor upgrades), and the controller; the system is costly but has high end quality.
It’s actually $930 if you add a ssd, second controller and 2 light guns with all modules
Thanks for the review / update. Never before have there been so many choices / options for retro gaming. The interface looks stellar and the ability to use original peripherals is really nice. A high quality plug and play consumer grade experience definitely would change the landscape of retro gaming. The idea of shelving all of my consoles is exciting and sad at the same time.
Dreams of a FPGA solution still intrigue me though, I’ll have to accept that this is a different beast. I’ll watch from the side lines a bit longer. Best case scenario is the wife not noticing one more strange looking box next to the MiSTer in the living room…
This is really a perfect solution for people like me who would like to get in to collecting some retro games, but don't necessarily want to go about collecting the systems. I'm sure I'm niche, but this appeals to me and I'm sure I'm not alone. I'm really sad I missed the preorder window!
For 300 bucks in the base config I expect perfection. To me it's not worth the money. I'll stick to the MiSTer and PC for now.
Mister?
@@MutleeIsTheAntiGod an open source FPGA platform capable of playing many arcade, console, computer and handheld systems with stunning accuracy. You can find many videos on the subject if you search for MiSTer FPGA. Like an open Source Super NT or Mega SG, if you know the analogue systems.
Agreed I'll stick to my PC at this price point, and if you get everything it raises the cost for near $700, that's a dang good AMD based gaming rig right there, of which can do so much more.

They have completely priced themselves out!
Scott Harmon exactly! I think it looks cool as hell but if I’m dropping that kinda scratch on a console this year it would probably be the new Xbox or PlayStation.
yeah, the corner the Polymega developers have painted themselves into is anyone who cares enough about retro emulation to put up that kind of money, expect perfection and would have the 'tism to achieve it by other means. None of the casual rich people they envisioned care enough to buy it either. Also all these ultra pricey plug and play all in ones should have dreamcast, gamecube and playstation 2 emulation, something any current Intel or AMD cpu can achieve these days while staying under 30w.
@@DrGamelove No offense but then this isn't for you.
This console is for people who grew-up in the 80's/90's and want to play all of their old games.
$300 (+ addons) really isn't that much money considering how many consoles this will replace, assuming it works with Everdrive carts.
@@MatthewWeiler1984 I started with Atari 2600 as a child. I love old games still. I'm just saying for that price I would be far more tempted to buy a next gen machine. Mainly I just want to revisit Saturn but I could buy one cheaper. Otherwise I already have access to libraries of old titles. And any retro fan likely already falls into that category too.
@@DrGamelove I considered this when I first heard about it. But I can get a PSONE for cheap in great condition and get a RetroTink for less money

Tahnk you MVG!!! I love your channel and your kindness to share your knowledge with us. I can't wait to see if the Poly Mega is compatible with Everdrive cartridges! I don't have an Everdrive but more than willing to pick up a PM and ED under the right circumstances.
I've never heard about this console but now I'm definitely interested!
A couple of PS1 games that I'd like to see tested:
Spyro 3
Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9
Rayman
R-Type Delta
Those are all my favourite PS1 games haha
Replace Final Fantasy for Mega Man and you've got mine!
I have all those games except final fantasy i play them on epsxe on an android tv box they all run fine... Whole setup cost about fifty bucks and works with ps mini controllers
Not excited about this since they dropped the fpga modules, but you did a great job on the video. I do like that it will rip the iso to the system because that should reduce load times.
Whenever you can test the SNES module, I would like to see how it deals with games the have an SA1 chip, such as Super Mario RPG. Those frequently have trouble under emulation.
The fact that you can't have both analog and digital controls active at the same time for Saturn makes sense, as you had to switch between the two via a switch on the Saturn 3D Controller. That said, I do think they could've made switching between the two less clunky by simply enabling analog when you moved the analog stick and enably digital when you pressed the d-pad, giving one of the two priority in the event that both were pressed at the same time.
Looking really good so far. Cheers for the vid!
I'd love to see some testing around emulation accuracy (framerate, lag)
personally not really interested in owning the system right now, but always love to see what the limits of new hardware are 🤔
Oh, I see, emulating PCE and Sega family without 6-button joystic. Way to go, guys. Way to go.
Hiccups along the way? Are you saying mistakes were made?
Marco “hiccups”. More like massive controversy and a lot of problems.
@@Overflow066 :P
At least give Polymega credit because we still havent seen the Atari VCS release yet since 2017??
CAPCOM784 I’d rather get am unreleased console instead of paying for a fpga console to then get scammed into an not even cheap emulation box. They could have easily put an fpga in there for the price.
@@Overflow066 You would rather get no console than a working one that will release in June?Ok.. I got ya???
The HDMI image looks the best for me. Clean and sharp. Looks like a modern game!
Awsome stuff.
Please keep us updated on this.
The clean HDMI scaling mode isn’t integer scaled. There are obvious different sized pixels in the checkerboard patterns. Looks really bad tbh :/
System should be running 720p instead as that allows a clean, full sized 3x scaling of these games. With 1080p you need large borders for integer scaling.
Ok, let's say it runs in 720p. Then what? Your TV scales it into 1080p.
Slay No my TV scales it to 4k. Pretty much all TVs scale with interpolation so even a 1080p TV would have to perform exceptionally poor scaling for it to look as noticeable as this.
All i heard was "Saturn" emulation.
That's all i needed to know.
Is this a generic controller ? coz' I have a Gamesir G3s with the same layout, same front LEDs, same microUSB connector placement...
Great Content BTW
Yes that's what it is, slightly customized for this machine. They confirmed this back on the old forums, but those have been taken down
From the official site's FAQ:
Polymega™ includes a Polymega™ wireless controller (Model: Gamesir 3GS) with its Base Unit, and the available Element Module Sets include a wired classic controller.
@@palody_en-ja Thanks dude, I think they made a good choice, because this controller is cheap and very good for its price tag. Got mine more than 1 year now and stills working like the first day.
That GUI home screen is the slickest i think i have seen for an emulator so far. If I'm wrong i hope someone points it out because i'm always happy to see these things improve
I had no idea this a thing before this video, and normally I don't expect much from dedicated emulation systems, but this is really impressive. It's priced to match too. I'd love one of these if they can get the price lower some day.
Can’t wait for this OS to get ripped and released so I can boot it on my own hardware because it puts Retropie to shame
I think it's a sleek frontend, nice to have pre-setup emulators and real cartridge / CD input for collectors. However, it not being FPGA lowers the whole concept by a lot in my eyes. With the exception of physical media and having to do some personal tinkering, Launchbox / Big Box on a SFF PC is a better option in my opinion. You have better console / emulator support, and can use the machine for both retro and modern gaming.
What SFF means?
@@blu-drag0n Small form factor
With strange machine you bypass the geek configuration on a pc, just plug and play?! Only 700$ and relax ...try to see an apk for nvidia shield call retrox
@@Valiarn With Launchbox / Bigbox there is very minimal setup needed to cover the consoles on the Polymega anyways. Just setup Retroarch with Launchbox and you got tons and tons of consoles covered already.
That's a £20 controller, it's based on the GameSir G3s. I own two, one has seen very light use yet the battery has disconnected itself internally, the other functions fine. Both blink at you constantly when connected via cable, both are shite when used wirelessly.
Both like to lock up when used over bluetooth with Android, possibly part of the reason they kept in a reset pinhole as that is what's required every time to fix it.
Edit: Should also add both are meant to be PS3 compatible, this has never worked properly on either unit.
Buyer beware.
Further edit: Noticed that Reset Game is the first option on the console submenu rather than switch game, bit precarious that.
I don't get why companies like this just don't include a controller period, and just give support of Xbox 360 USB wired, and wireless controllers, as they are cheap, and easy to come by, plus it would save people from complaining to them about the controllers. In fact they should just do what Linux has done for years, and give proper USB HID support so even things like the Mayflash USB to Wii Classic Controller adapter works with no setup needed period, same for PS2 controller adapters, etc..
@@CommodoreFan64 Including a crappy controller just immediately gives the user a bad impression of the device as a whole. I especially don't understand why they think the target audience of this product doesn't already have wireless controllers or original console controllers that they would much rather use over some generic pieces of crap.
As a potential buyer, I'd much rather have no controller packed in than see it come with a garbage controller that I'm never going to use that I'm essentially forced to pay for.
Very well done presentation, lots of great info, has definitely created more interest in this system for me.
I am looking forward to get one. The only thing I wish they have is different color options for the console like blue, red, green etc... Perhaps in the future, I hope :)
I was interested until they mentioned the price. Lol. They really missed the mark on that.
No they didn't it's less then a Wii Right now
Well, the price isn't really a problem. The fact that you can't just fill it with your own ROM files is.
@@madfinntech I didn't even catch that. That's a total deal breaker on a sell 🤦🏾♂️

Them: Do not open up OUR console that YOU don’t own. Him: LETS DO IT ANYWAYS SINCE THEY TRUSTED ME!!
Would have been funny if it was just a raspberry pi with a piece of wood to make the console feel heavier and that why they didn't want anyone to open it up.
Rebelling is always fun eh?
honestly, the only thing, at all, keeping me from immediately trying to figure out how to add this to my budget is no N64 module. Sadly I know the system has a lot of difficulties in emulation. This looks spectacular,, though.
Would be a nice feature to add a 'Report non-working title' in the launch menu. Would be a valuable database for the devs.
brings back memories of my youth when these games first came out and blew my mind, we've come along way baby.
i went out of my way to make my computer work with a 15khz crt tv, this product is the exact opposite of what i need
How'd you do it?. . . I still have a gtx 970 which has the DVI-I port, which means I'm down to VGA/31Khz. You get a special card?
I rgb modded my tv, installed a female vga connector in the back (just so i didn't need to modify the cable, it won't work with normal vga signals) and use an HD6670 with crt emu driver (a modded driver absolutely needed for this, directX doesn't work though, opengl all the way)
before this i used to use a 31khz crt monitor and configured retroarch to run super resolutions (2560x240 120hz for example) at 120hz the scanlines pop, but they are even stronger than in BVMs and i didn't like it very much, closer to an LCD than a CRT tv
Methinks, i'll hold onto my Nvidia Shield instead. Damn thing does practically everything but cook your breakfast!
Wise choice. I just use my Pc, best emulation choice there is but if not I'd have a Shield.
@xLucky Sinz yes. Rather use my switch and PC.
Yep and that G-Force thing is already past the next systems 🤣
You'd rather use your Android or iOS to emulate than this overpriced gimmick of a console
I'd say Switch is better than Nvidia Shield ;) Just so you get that nice portability and all the Switch games as well. And of course tons of emulators you can take with you and play on the big screen.
I feel like I own that exact controller, it was pretty cheap and I got it years ago. Pretty disappointed that they didn't make their own controller
The design philosophy for the console was built around a gimmick and quality was not in the forefront of that process.
It looks exactly like a Matricom GPAD XYBA. Whats your controller? Im intrigued to see if its the same.
Friggle Dee There are many names for this controller. That’s how china works, the manufacturer only sells it’s product to resellers, not to end consumers. The resellers buy a batch of products with their brand name printed on and sell it for 3x the price on Amazon or Aliexpress. That’s why you often see the exact same product with different names and prices, just like your Matricom or the Polymega.
