My wife and I are being cremated so it’s nice to know what the process will be when our time comes. Thanks Kari ,safe travels,Takecare from ballarat in Oz,👋🙏🙏👏👏🇦🇺
I really love the concept here! Their facility is so inviting and comfortable with warm touches, very much unlike traditional funeral homes. I like the idea of being able to see a loved one through the entire process this way. I would think a person’s sense of closure would be so much easier to attain by actually witnessing or just being there with the family. Great video as usual Kari!
we also have a live screen of our heat stacks at our crematory in Long beach as well. so many things in common with pet and human cremation. so much compassion goes into caring for loved ones, each one meaningful and different
Yep, cremation is the way to go. So cheap and easy to do. Dad got cremated a few years ago and we just put him up on a closet shelf in the nice little box they gave us. 👍
This is similar to the crematory I worked at in VA. It was a super small facility with only two retorts and one of them was so old the doors were hand operated. It, and our partnering funeral home are all getting upgrades next spring.
Thanks to the information you have provided on your channel, I was able to go out and confidently pre-arrange cremation services, and a comfy niche for my wife and I. Thank you Kari the mortician! Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Wow! I'm very impressed. I've seen some videos online that were downright scary and the people running the retorts were very disrespectful. Daisy Hill, hmmm if I remember correctly, I think that is the name of the place where Charlie Brown got Snoopy. The Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Thanks for the tour! It was impressive and informative! Merry Christmas!
Thanks for sharing this video ! I’m glad to see cremation in a more gentle dignified way . At times , family members feel like they have to go every step of the way to the very end with their loved one . I’m glad to see those that who choose this can be there until the very last step and be comfortable , be reassured their loved one is in the best care and being treated with dignity . The older crematories seem barbaric in some people’s minds making the process that much more difficult to bare . Once again thank you and thank you Steve for this video !
This is the type of crematorium my British friends tell me about in the UK. They are decorated like this and they have services there. They say the new ones are beautiful.
My sister and I participated in my dad's cremation. It really helped us process our grief in a way we didn't when our mom passed a year earlier as my dad made all of the arrangements. The funeral home went over and above for us. My dad as a minister and had done many services there. I am hoping for an outdoor cremation in Crestone, CO for myself. It's so nice to live in CO where such a cremation is possible.
It's good to see FH's are changing to the needs of families. In the 70's, cremations were unheard of & comprised of approx. 20% of dispositions in the U.S., but was more popular in coastal states, particularly on the West Coast. With cremation embraced by most religions, there will be more service options provided with several price points.
Thank you for the video. My parents both have passed and were cremated at Daisy Hill. I pick up my mother's ashes tomorrow. They will missed beyond measure.
I toured the cremation area where my pets are cremated but this is so interesting. Thank you. The one I toured was definitely more industrial where the machinery is though they kept a beautiful lobby and sitting area :)
There is such fear going into a cremation, this place seems lovely and so relaxing. Wish the place we went to to have my dad cremated was like this, it was so impersonal and cold. We were told absolutely nothing about the process or what to expect when we would get his ashes back.
A bright, welcoming environment is so important. There used to be a moment when the coffin just disappeared behind curtains. I felt that was cold. I'm used to family funerals when the coffin is lowered into grave. Somehow, I found that comforting. It's nice that family can accompany the coffin to the crematorium, although I wouldn't want to watch the burning of the body.
A very nice crematory. Pleasing to the eye, not industrial looking at all. I am going to be cremated. Me personally wouldn’t be thinking about daisy cookies if my loved one was being cremated though.
Nice video Kari. I often heard my co-workers say " these bosses don't know who we are we're just a number". I believe this to be true all the way to the end when we are known by a assigned number in cremation.
Cremulator truly sounds better then pulverizer, over heard it called that. Also over time the cremation remains change. Example when you first pick up your loved one and you take a peek at the cremated remains you may see the bones are really white and bigger pieces. The yrs later you look again the bones are a lot more fine
Are there certain bones that will always need to be broken down after cremation or it depends on the person. Has there been an instance when the skull didn't break down during cremation?
Good question. The cremation process reduces the body down to the bone structure. After the cremation process, some bones are recognizable but they are so brittle that they will break under even light pressure. Large bones such as leg and arm bones may still appear in shape. Cranial bones are often flat and dense and require a little more pressure to be reduced therefore after the cremated remains have cooled, they are placed in the processor or cremulator which has an apparatus that reduces these pieces to a sand/gravel/powder type of result. The apparatus is also designed to filter out any inorganic material such as small metals. The large metal implants are removed prior to processing because they are easier to see, yet some metals such as dental fillings are separated in the processor.
our local crem has been similar to this for many years. we have a service then the casket/coffin is auto rolled through curtains into the machine then you collect your loved one a day or so later
Funeral homes invest a lot of money installing these systems. When Mom passed in '12 I was able to be there for the entire process ( here in SC ) until her remains were placed in the retort. the home spent over $600K earlier in 2012 on their upgraded system that is nearly identical to what you showed here ( that amount was verified indirectly for me later by someone I know who was involved in the install). The performance of that thing is amazing. It is designed to eliminate (as far as possible with the best engineering) co-mingling of cremains. I was HUGELY impressed and satisfied with everything. I know Mom would have been as well. 😌
When I build my new custom home I’m planning on having a retort built into the garage. My reasoning is I would like to die and be cremated without leaving home. My friends and family dig the idea however the local zoning department is giving me backlash. Daisy Hill Crematorium needs to make cookies in the shape of a retort as well. That would be cool!
The county coroner/medical examiner's office will not allow your wishes. A mandatory hold of days/ weeks will be automatically imposed by the coroner/medical examiner's office to allow medicolegal death investigation, before your remains can be cremated!
Hey kari, I love your videos. When I had dad cremated I asked to go see it but they wouldn't let me. Also I asked for dads knee replament parts. Lol. I was happy they said I cold keep them. 😂 it was fabulous to see exactly what dads knees were made of. I know it's a funny thing to ask a funeral home. I got the idea from kaitlyn ask a mortitian. Between watching your videos and hers it made my dads passing an easier more cumfy experience. You are brilliant. I'm glad you have a sence of humour under that profesional hat you wear. You would be so much fun to hang out with. 😁🥰🤗
First of all, I feel that you, Kari, could complete this whole video by yourself. Next, I've seen videos, where the whole process is much more lavish. The cremation is done with colorful curtains and drapes. The family gets to see the body being inserted in the cremator. A very family affair. And what about Aqua cremation. It seems so much better, mentally. One way, the body gets burned up. The other way, the body is in a water and a biodegradable solution. It's nice to see that the process of making death, final for the family and friends. The process of decomposition is speed up quicker. Thanks for the video.
Very interesting Kari and I was very impressed with this place and when I die I'm getting cremated and both my parents are also and I would love to go to a place like this that is very warm welcoming and very welcoming to parents grandparents children and so forth
Gorgeous hair and nails honey! I always get so distracted by your beauty :) Man, that shade opening on that viewing window kinda creeped me out, lol, great video!
Thank you for doing this new video about cremation. I love the look of the place and this was very informative . The only thing I have to say is that I do not like the fire cremation, we prefer the aquamation process. I feel it is much more environmentally friendly. Is there any possibility to do an updated video on the aquamation process? I plan on even having my pets cremated via aquamation. Thank you both for taking the time to explain the process and making it a lot less difficult to sleep knowing our family member is treated with respect. May you both have a very Merry and Blessed Holiday. God Bless…..my prayers to all who are missing someone this season….. I love you and miss you Daddy and Mom. 🙏🏼🦋🎄
That is an exquisite facility. Do they do "ID views" there for families and I wonder if families are allowed to bring in members of clergy at the time of cremation for a "service"? Last thing I wonder is if this facility also doubles as a direct disposer or if that's even a thing in Michigan? Great video! Merry Christmas 🎅
Thank you, Yes, we do ID views in our witnessing room. This is another reason that we have a shade on the witness window. This allows immediate family only to verify the identity of their loved one prior to cremation. They may also view the identification tag so they know their permanent cremation number that is cremated with the body and used later to identify the cremated remains. In Michigan, crematories cannot be direct depositors. The deceased individual must go through a licensed funeral home prior to cremation to fill out cremation authorization paperwork. Several forms including a cremation authorization signed by the family and a cremation permit and a death certificate must be signed my a doctor or medical examiner and the funeral director before cremation takes place.
@@KaritheMortician was wondering if Michigan had direct disposers. In Florida you can use a direct disposer for direct cremation and it's substantially less money than going into a funeral home for direct cremation.
@@lrmgrl I believe in michigan, you have to through a funeral home to have cremation done. The funeral home that daisy hill works with is beautiful and fairly new.
Direct cremation, as in cremation within a matter of hours or days, is not allowed anywhere in the United States of America! This is because an automatic coroner's/medical examiner's hold is automatic. This hold could range from days to weeks, possibly even months to give the coroner/medical examiner's office sufficient time to investigate the circumstances surrounding the individual's death. Only then, can cremation legally be performed!
Did the people who designed this facility have feedback from families as to how their past experience could have been better, or did they just decide to make the facility somewhat of an opposite of the “industrial style” referred to early on in the video? A great way to give people options! Thank you for creating this video!
So KARI you said that the metal tag is put inside with the body then the body is put into the cremation machine, the tag does not melt.?Thank you for this information.allthough I am not a believer of cremation I have learned from your videos.
After the body has come out of the Retort and it's is cool can the family then ask to get thier love one as is with everything that came out of the retort and nothing removed or pulverized ??? Or dose the metal have to be removed & pulverized?
Metal is usually removed unless the family signs a waiver for it to remain, if so, we do still remove the metals but separate them and place them in a different container to return the family. If the family requests that the cremated remains not be pulverized, it does depend on the State laws; if the State allows cremated remains to be released to a family unpulverized, they must sign a waiver and the cremated remains will be released as they were prior to pulverization. This is often requested for religious rights and ceremonies or for identification purposes.
If the family requests these items back, we have them sign a waiver that they understand they are requesting the inorganic material to be returned. This waiver protects both parties interest so they are not surprised to find these items when they receive the cremated remains. It also serves as a note to the crematory that the family requests the items. We of course must explain that it’s very possible that the cremation may eliminate parts of these items as a whole or partially. It all depends on what the material is made of. We find that these requests are often a comfort to a family as a form of identification.
@@terrijones8127 that’s a good point. If an autopsy is performed, or anatomical donation takes place, these items may be removed then but not everyone goes through an autopsy though. Artificial joints or other metallic body apparatus are rarely removed during an autopsy.
Reference the TV monitor, I was passing a crematory in Asheville NC that has a grease fire in the exhaust stack. Looked like a rocket motor. Wasn't long before the Fire Department showed up.
How do they collect all the ashes and not get it mixed with the last person that was in there? I always wandered about that. (I guess for the older places) Thats a beautiful facility
We have a very thorough procedure when it comes to sweeping out remains. Although it seems that sweeping out cremated remains would be difficult to acquire every little bit, the initial cremated remains are quite large and appear lighter in color. We also utilize a high powered spotlight to see into the cremation chamber, as well as using a high temp vacuum to clear all cremated remains. Commingling with the previous case is less than 1 %.
I’m curious how the retorts are cleaned in between cremations to prevent any small pieces of remains getting mixed in with others. Also, is it just the person and what they’re wearing that goes in the chamber or are in the in a box or container of sorts that gets mixed in with their remains?
An Idea! If the retort can be started via phone as stated in the video, then Skype could be used to hold services for those loved ones far away and they could use an online button to start the process. Given the new day issues with travel, it might be something to consider to expand services. Great job in presenting the death side of life.
That is a good idea. As every family we serve is different, we are always exploring ways to allow families to be involved in the process and find comfort in knowing that the cremated remains that were given to them are indeed their loved family member.
My wife and I are being cremated so it’s nice to know what the process will be when our time comes. Thanks Kari ,safe travels,Takecare from ballarat in Oz,👋🙏🙏👏👏🇦🇺

Does the family get to keep anything that’s removed for cremation like false heart valves , artificial joints , pain pumps etc… ?
I think that is done during the autopsy
The metal removed after they can keep or it is recycled
A small percentage of people are autopsied
Kari, once again thank you for your hard work. If you didn't show and teach us we'd have no clue. Every video with you is a learning experience.
Kari is great at stamping out ignorance and cluelessness; the hallmark of a great teacher.
Wow, thank you!
Reference the TV monitor, I was passing a crematory in Asheville NC that has a grease fire in the exhaust stack. Looked like a rocket motor. Wasn't long before the Fire Department showed up.
Yeah its a dangerous thing sometimes
Have a safe and peaceful holiday to you and your family ❤️❤️
To you also!
How do they collect all the ashes and not get it mixed with the last person that was in there? I always wandered about that. (I guess for the older places) Thats a beautiful facility
There will always! be comingling of some small proportion
Modern and inviting. Funeral homes could take a lesson from this. Many still have that frumpy look.
Costs a lot to update so many funeral homes just dont sadly
An Idea! If the retort can be started via phone as stated in the video, then Skype could be used to hold services for those loved ones far away and they could use an online button to start the process. Given the new day issues with travel, it might be something to consider to expand services. Great job in presenting the death side of life.
They would have to do something to create a one time use code for it but theoretically it could be done
That is a good idea. As every family we serve is different, we are always exploring ways to allow families to be involved in the process and find comfort in knowing that the cremated remains that were given to them are indeed their loved family member.
When you say witness the cremation, can you actually see the person being cremated? Is it see through?
No it is not. Check out my video recently on witnessing cremation
Skipped over the most important part! What does that machine do in the cabinet?
Cremulator…pulverized the bones
That was interesting.
Thanks!
So that bottom chamber is more for the liquids that would seep out during the burning process, is that correct?
I love this.
thanks
Why is it illegal to allow full bones to be provided as cremation remains. Is there a basis for this law?
So there are not full bones just out there
How long does it take for a retort to cool down
It dpeends on what and who was burned
Thanks Soo much for sharing
you are welcome!
