I picked one of these up for cheap awhile back at a local thrift. Mine was filled with a bunch of movies taped from cable, including a bunch from adult channels, lol. Can't believe someone donated it like that, a young kid could have bought it. I was disappointed when I found out it wasn't a digital tv tuner as that was one of the thing I had planned to use it for. It sure looked the right age to have that capability. Great channel, thanks for sharing all your detailed repair vids as well as your old travel tapes.

It was a pain in the ass when tv manufacturers started to put the tuning on the remote handset only 🤬 and universal remotes just never covered those necessary functions

I used to have an LG LRA-536 DVD recorder. This was back when PVR cable boxes weren't really common, maybe 2005. It was much easier to use than a VCR, that's for sure.

I have a toshiba and a pioneer which both luckily have buttons on the front to allow rec and stop (I do own the remotes as well). Other features I like are the manual setting of the bitrate and on both of them I have been able to replace the original dvd drives for working ones. I am in the UK and find the pioneer is nice as it allows ntsc (pal-60) as well as pal record.

Had another winner today, Samsung plasma TV, no power, no standby light, checked the fuses on the main power board 1 out of 3 was open, checked after the open fuse for shorted /damaged components, and couldn't find anything, so I risked it, changed the fuse, plugged it in, the fuse blew instantly, I traced the line after the fuse to a 6 pin power switch ic, it wasn't reading short vcc to ground or output to ground, but I took it out, and saw it had burnt on the bottom of it, so I found another ic from an old donor (different board but Samsung), plugged it in again, this time I saw a flash from a 15v voltage regulator next to the ic, so I replaced that and tried again, this time the ntc thermistor popped and took the fuse in the plug out again, so I traced back from the ntc and it fed 2 diodes in series which were both short, so I changed them, plugged it in again, and hey presto, no bang, standby light was there, and it fired up perfect, really good picture actually for a plasma TV. Didn't finish untill 3 am but I've got that smug feeling and I'm happy! Can not thankyou enough for the inspiration and education 12v vids!

The GE by JASCO remote MIGHT have a code suitable for these units. Those are cheap and have a very extensive code library. The newest versions of the remote will work smart TVs and Roku players. I think JASCO offers the remote under other names. But, GE seems most common.

those things were big in the early 2000,s taking their cue from companies like Replay TV and TiVo until satellite companies like Direct TV and Dish network started coming out with their own brands. Had two 100 gb dish network HD recorders that I manage to copy content off before the drives died. Have a Panasonic sitting in the garage that hasn't been used in a decade.

I got another one that has a VHS VCR built in and it plays super VHS as well. That's a good find.

It could be that MTS Stereo is disabled in the units settings menu.
Also, units with built in digital TV tuners didn't start to appear until 2008.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

No, doesn't have a stereo tuner. I also have an 850. Been through the menus on it everywhere. No option.

@@12voltvids That's odd. Must have been a cheaper model.

@@r66f80 all the tv by this time had dispensed with MTS too. I have a TV from 2006. Stereo only from external inputs.

These units appear to use connections on the drives that are similar interfaces to computer drives.

They use SATA, older ones will use IDE. Some use SATA but with non standard connector's.

Always handy to have one of those around, as you said a transfer machine.
I did notice the psu, no sign of dead caps so maybe it didn't have a lot of use.
I bet it's one of those devices that you have to have a special disk to format a new drive.
They are shitbags for doing that 😞
i just steal the drive out of them, free storage 😀

What is the video format? MPEG2 for video and MP2 for audio? I wonder that the OS is kind of Linux, maybe the harddrive is in EXT2 or EXT4 format...

My dvd vcr combo for some reason keeps switching from dvd to vcr and the door won’t open just keeps switching outputs but vcr side works fine.

I've got a few LG DVD recorders and they all suffer the same fate. Something goes wrong with the disc recorder and they screw up discs, either after recording or on finalisation. I can't find anything online about how to fix this.

have you tried eBay for remote. I have a Panasonic that I used to record to the hard drive then make a dvd-rw then I use DVD decrypter to make an ISO file on my hard drive. I have at least 110 TB of movies TV shows and videos. I have six of the Panasonic recorders of various hard drive sizes. I had a Magnavox but it was too hard to use and the remote sucked.

I`ve never been able to figure out why people can`t keep up with their remotes.

Why would someone record 10 hours of snow?

    • @12voltvids

Probably because they didn't know how to run it or couldn't stop it because the remote was missing.

Judging by the date of 2007 shown up at 9:12, 80GB seems to have been good enough for the time.
Real time dubbing is idiotic though, even by 2007/8 standards.
