Between 1972 and 1989, the village was known as Beckindale, the show was based around the Sugden family who lived at Emmerdale Farm, that was the original name of the show. In November 1989, when the Tate family was introduced the village was renamed Emmerdale, the change was made after a plane crash killed several of the village residents, the villagers thought that the Beckindale name was cursed so they changed it to Emmerdale, also the show was featuring racier and sexier storylines instead of being focused around Annie Sugden's kitchen.
Shirley Stelfox (Edna Birch) was never, ever seen without her silly hat in a single episode of Emmerdale that she appeared in. Shirley, a 'method' actress was said to have even slept and showered with the hat on and couldn't be parted from it. steve Halliwall ( Zac Dingle) was, similarly, never, ever seen without his flat cap in a single episode of Emmerdale that he appeared in. So attached to the cap was the dingle-meister, that when he died, they had to surgically remove the cap which had been stuck on his head with super-glue for decades
