Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I’d like to add a tip … once you’ve painted the big shapes and have done the block-in, drop your brushes and go do something else. Walk the dog, get a cup of coffee, watch a Netflix, anything. Just get away from the painting for a while and only then come back and continue. You’d be amazed how many things you then see which you want to get corrected before diving into more detailed work.

One thing about self portraits is that we are sho used to seeing ourselves in the mirror that painting from a photo can be unsettling. I've seen many posts from people who are unhappy with what they painted from a photo. After telling them to look at it in a mirror, they understand. We are not symmetrical.

I've been following you for about a year since I started painting. You are so helpful. I have been doing landscapes but just started a portrait so this was very timely. I think your self portrait is one of my favorite paintings you have done. The colors, brush strokes, and it perfectly captures the intensity of an artist. So far my portrait is going well. (crosses fingers)

I’m trying to get into the AP drawing class next year after only taking a year of art (I’m currently a freshman). I showed my portfolio, and today I was told that by Monday (it’s Friday right now) I have to draw a 1 point perspective, a 2 point perspective, and a self portrait in a traditional art style with values and a background. I’m so shocked that I’m basically in after I draw those, but I’m still super happy. I’m just here to start with the self portrait

Thanks for another great video. With your help I've transitioned from acrylic to oil and, to my great surprise, even had a couple of decent attempts at portraits. Your basic principles give me a lot of confidence - i.e. stick to shapes of lights and darks and you can paint anything. I'd love to see a video on how you would go about painting a group of people. Not a whole bunch of little far away people, but something more like a group around a table. That seems hard to me. I had a look through your archive and couldn't find anything.. maybe it just doesn't make for a good composition?

Hi, these questions are not intended to ofend but to clarify myself; What is the point of painting from a photo that has already captured your face, your facial expression, your eyes?... Isn't it just an unnecesary layer of "interestingness" you're adding? I think the photo you chose was already interesting on its own and was a great work of photography.
I can't help to think you're not painting yourself, but a photo of yourself and, as I see it, those are far from being the same.
(Go to 5:15) Also, where is the line that separates art from just tracing something?, Isn't it the same to use a tool to copy the lenght of a few shapes than to copy them all? Does it make it less of a copy to do half of the work? Does it need to be made freehand or "free-eye" to be art?
These are questions I ask to myself and I'd really like to know your opinion on these subjects. Thank you.

  • @nadineessary1038

Could you discuss how to use warm and cool temperature of each color? Some have said to try not to mix the warm and cools because it neutralizes the color shift. For example, ultramarine blue is warm but pthalo blue is cool so does that mean ultramarine blue is forward from alizarine crimson which is a cool red? What is your experience with this concept? Thanks so much for sharing your experience and opinion, enjoy your videos!

I’d like to ask, what do guys think is better. For an absolute beginner to practice oil painting online through a course? Or to practice in real life through a course as well?? Because I’m lost and I don’t know which one is better :)

Sorry, I have to question the teachings of any painting coach whose own paintings still make the basic mistake of adding too much white into all colors used. For my eye, this is an amateur error, actually a bad habit, and should be corrected.
