    What I'm getting from the comments is that it's probably worth it to switch once you're so high (2500/2600+) that you're starting to have a really hard time finding matches at all but until then not to bother with the extra latency because there's still more to learn in a less latent environment.

      Europeans lag more for me than JP, it depends on where you are located.
      JP has at least 10x as many active players as NA and EU *combined* based off various X power benchmarks (top 500 and top 3000 mainly) and due to JP dataminers we know the average X power is only 1800ish
      The reality is even at like 2300 you benefit from facing way more players actually near your skill level. If you're anywhere near 1800 dont bother tho

    I’ll offer my perspective. I’m in the US and I’ve played in the Tentatek both seasons. I did this because it seems like that’s what the devs wanted me to do and I was concerned about lag. Season 1 when I was seeing everyone getting pretty eye popping scores, I wanted in on that and set my goal at getting 2700 (in Splatoon 2 I had reached 2600 a few times). I fell short of that, so resigned myself to aiming for top 500 in every mode which I did accomplish. It felt like a good challenge especially coming off of Anarchy battles (though I’ll admit, most games could have their outcome predicted by which team had more splashes).
    This season, it’s definitely rougher. Top 500 has not been difficult at all, but at 2600 the struggle is even finding a match. There’s a lot of pressure to stay warmed up in the waiting room for 20+ minutes until you find a match and then feel you have to carry and knowing that a loss will be devastating. The long time to queue makes it harder to regain points you do lose which is giving me flashbacks to Splatoon 2 when one loss could erase 2 hours of progress.
    I disagree that the system should continue. We’re 7 months after release and wait times are already a problem? Wait until League battles come out. Wait until people just get bored and drop the game after they’ve had their fill. I only see things getting worse. I’d much rather just play players at my skill level regardless of where they are located rather than have to guess the decisions of others and have to live with those consequences for a quarter of a year.
    It’d be nice to have a cooler badge or some high power I can post about on Twitter and brag, but I just want fair matches in a timelier manner and further splitting the player base works against that goal.

      Tbh I think the solution should be exactly like how Splatoon 2 league is
      You make anarchy one thing again, no regions, but the difference is that you show top 500 overall, top 500 Japan, top 500 EU and top 500 NA+OC.

    • @yuanfu1472
      @yuanfu1472 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah I went back to anarchy, I just want to play some games, what’s the point of X if you can’t even find a game?

    • @xana3961
      @xana3961 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem is that Nintendo will match NA and EU players together and JP and Oceania players together if we go back to splatoon 2's system, trying to keep both apart because of lag. Which means that the competitive players in NA and EU aren't going to get near the practice they need without putting themselves through VPNs which cause *more* lag.
      I'd rather have this system where people can just choose to go to the other league even if one of them gets left behind simply so that we can be matched globally with all players. We all Nintendo won't actually allow true global matchmaking and will favor matches closer to the user's geographic location rather than the actually strongest players.

    • @GreGuru
      @GreGuru ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@xana3961 I admittedly know nothing about coding/game design, but I wouldn’t think it would be that hard to search for an even match with balanced comps as it does now, but limit it to players in your region for the first 45-60 seconds of the wait and if 8 players are not found, open the parameters to players of any region who meet the criteria.
      I think Nintendo faced a lot of backlash in Splatoon 2 by prioritizing matchmaking speed over all else which is why you’d get quick matches, but unfair comps. I’m wondering if they underestimated how much mirroring comps combined with dividing the player base would lead to such a surge in queue times. If you asked most Splat 2 players, I’m sure many would say they’d accept a 1-2 minute wait time if it meant more balanced games than 20 second waits. But instead right now we’re getting 15 minute waits which will just become an unsustainable death spiral because people are going to stop trying altogether.

    • @xana3961
      @xana3961 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GreGuru You are correct on that front. I wasn't addressing it as a coding problem, I was addressing it as a problem with Nintendo's design mindset. Its actually MORE work to create lobbies that favor regions closer to your location than to make lobbies that take random people from all over the world and put them into random lobbies. Even using P2P.
      What I am saying is "I'd rather have this system because, if we had a different one, Nintendo would screw it up."

    I switched to Takoroka for this current season. At the end of chill season in Tentatek I was above 2900XP trying to reach 3k, and wasn't able to for weeks and never made it. Not because of losing games, but because I couldn't find any at all. I'd go entire rotations trying to queue without finding a single match in zones, so I switched to Takoroka hoping that the higher general skill level and player population would keep me finding lobbies in higher powers next time. I haven't hit 2900 yet, but currently around 2700 I'm still finding lobbies on essentially every attempt, and the caliber of top 500 lobbies in Takoroka feels like night and day compared to Tentatek. So at *this point* Takoroka feels great, however the grind to get a decent enough power to start getting paired with other high power players to start with felt much worse than in Tentatek in my opinion. Lower power JP lobbies (~2500XP and below) don't play any differently or better from western lobbies except there's now latency that you also have to power through, so it can feel even less meaningful or within your control to play in those. With that in mind, I think Takoroka is worth it for those who have confidence they truly can throw their weight around with some of Japan's best and learn from it, but at some point the "domino effect" Gem brought up will have a breaking point, or at the very least leave a large portion of the incoming western population to Takoroka quite disappointed as they won't actually get to appreciate that higher match quality at high powers.

    I really think that having Series and X be two separate and redundant queues hurts the quality of matchmaking a lot. I'm in low X and most of my matches are... "Not enough players. Please try again."
    X should just be how the whole game works from the start. A working rating system shouldn't be something only the best players get to unlock.

    as a person who sits around 1900 xp average in all modes the switch to takaroka division has made the matches a lot easier since I don't have to worry about matching with a top 500 player when playing these matches cause of the population density.
    and overall difficulty in matches is a lot more consistaint.
    Since last time I grinded x rank back in chill season I top cut in off the dial's FABL 3 times and am moving on to the finals.
    so that might have a considerable effect on my perspective as I have significantly improved my play in FABL.
    edit: I had 2102 x power in rain when I entered so I barely qualified for alpha.
    I probably only got in during qual 2 cause of less player playing and managing to top cut in beta qual 1.

    the last season i was in x my highest power was 1700 something. That was in Takoroka. I havent played for a while bc my class hasnt really gotten too much love in the updates (splatlings) and ive been feeling burnt out. I also deal with anxiety problems which can make the grind really difficult for me to dedicate 100 hours + a season to get to 2500 (my goal). I am a bit concerned that people below 2500 will have a even harder time to get the badges especially if people are hitting 4k already. I live in Australia and i know my wifi could not handle being in tentatek. I dont want this to come off as a skill issue winge, I know that I am no where near the skill of these high level players. Im just concerned that there will be one devision that has max 2300 and one that goes from 1500 to 5000 X power. Maybe there should be 3 devisions, 1 for Na another for Oceania and then a final one for comp players. That way its more spread out, idk tho lol I havent gotten into it for a while for my own reasons lol

    As you said Gem, bad players exist in Japan too. I think the best time for a player to make the jump to JP div is if they are top 500 in the west, consistently getting put in top 500 lobbies, and they feel their matches against other top 500 players are too easy for them. At lower levels, you are still getting the same mistakes less skilled players make, just with more lag. I played a bit in JP div in the previous season and am now in western div. Just a low-power player's two cents.

    I'm hoping to get into X rank this season, and this has given me something to think about. I was low S+ in 2, and went from somewhere in B to S in about a week last season. It's mildly frustrating doing qualifiers to get back into S and watching the entire rest of my team do things like pile onto the tower. I hope I can get up there and experience a higher level of play, even if that means I'll probably be getting crushed for a while.
    I don't think latency against Japanese players will be that bad, back in S1 I was always getting placed with Japanese players, and it was a shock getting forced into the NA pool in 2, US players play differently (and in my opinion poorly) and the games were far more unstable thanks to how terrible this US's ISPs are.

    If all of the best players are gonna be in one leaderboard anyway, I don't see the benefit of multiple leaderboards. But now that we're getting to the point where there's one "good player" server and two "bad player" servers, its just gonna skew the playerbase even more and make the barrier to entry feel a lot more unwelcoming. I don’t really know how common my experience is, but I’ve been hovering between 21-2200 on all modes TTek for the past two ranked splits.
    I had a feeling at launch that the “good” players, people I want to be on-level with in an organized tournament context someday, were not going to compete in their “home” region due to the likely skill difference between Ttek/Takoroka that was expected due to the series’ history. All the same, I’d never peaked very high in 2, (2400 max in one mode), so I felt like I wasn’t “worthy” of playing Takoroka? Like even if it’s objectively the better setting to improve my game, that desire to improve doesn’t outweigh the chance that I would negatively impact the experience of those who can handle it.
    I’m at a point now with ranked where I’d like to disregard the glicko rating and simply focus on my fundamentals and how I play a given lobby to grow from that, and let the power gains come naturally. However, I don’t really know where my rational frustrations (queue times getting much longer with growth, hitting a wall that I don’t know how to get past) end and where my irrational frustrations (the usual ranked behaviors of tilting on a loss streak, not having the time to evaluate if a teammate’s performance is reflective of their skill or my inability to play off of them effectively), begin. I feel really discouraged to keep attempting to improve some days because I start to believe that EVEN IF I can be happy with my own effort and progress, it matters less in a grand scheme because I’m making that progress on my home region, a region that other western players like me are abandoning to play on an objectively worse network environment or a private ladder (colo) that’s a flatly different experience. I can’t help but feel like I’m shooting myself in the foot for not taking that kind of dive.
    I also play competitively, and in a small way wish I didn’t so I had more time to grind my individual play. (I’d never quit though, the scrim and tournament play experience is satisfying in a unique way.) ((But even then, is it worth it to spend my time there, if I’m not playing against players that are better than me at all times? If our internal team discussions on how to improve are based on our own not fully informed conclusions about what is BAD and what will make us BETTER?))
    tl;dr For a player longing to break through the walls of entry level play both on ladder and in organized settings, the Splatoon landscape feels like a mess of places where one could waste their own time and not have much to show for it, especially for a player with not many connections to more established spaces. I wish I knew where to go to learn more about the game on a fundamental level, and I wish even more strongly I knew the best place to put myself out there to find people willing to help driven players improve and set goals.

    I have a combined +2500 hours between Splatoon 2 and 3, but I feel like I haven't learned much from all those hours. I feel like my main problem with trying to improve at Splatoon is 2 things:
    My weapon choice and complacency
    I main Dynamo roller. See the problem? I know that Dynamo isn't the best weapon, but its fun to use, and fun is more important than winning to me. I also find that I have more fun in a casual setting than I do in more competitive scenes. I've considered trying to join a low level pick-up tournament just to see how I like it, but I don't want my hyper fixation with Dynamo to ruin the experience of my team mates. I'm sure it wouldn't as bad as I think, but I often take responsibility when my team loses. I think "If only I got that pick" or "If only I didn't get killed then" or "If only I had my special", things that are in my control. Even if it isn't my fault, I always think that there is some way I could've done better, to contribute more to the team. But I feel like I'm intentionally kneecapping myself by using a low tier weapon.
    It all boils down to this:
    I want to get better, but I use a bad weapon because it's fun to use, and I don't want to feel like I'm the reason I brought down a team with my casual centered mindset

    • @whyhellothere6855
      @whyhellothere6855 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don’t beat yourself too hard for having a too “casual” mindset. I’m in a similar boat where I do want to do some team-play tournaments and such but is not at all interested in going full-on competitive. There’s going to be people like you who are just playing comp for fun and I’m sure I can find some casual games if I look hard enough. Plus, I only main splatlings (with the occasional e-liter, but only for like a month and not about to use it in actual teams), which is an “eh” class, so I also worry sometimes that I cant contribute anything outside of that niche. But if you really think about it there are still top level players with their own niches that they can play with outside of the generic splash/shooter, and by the looks of it you’re not looking to go into high top-level play where weapon choice matters a lot more than casual tournaments. As long as you’re having fun, and can find people who enjoy playing with you, that’s all that matters.

Personally I love the challenge of playing against top JP player and have made it to 2600xp but most players I know are switching next season purely because of how easy the badge will be to obtain

Last season, I got top 500, and I was glad to get the crown, but high level x rank feels much less serious in ttek. I think part of the reason for this isn't necessarily the lack of players in tentatek, but rather, the lack of players that are at a very high level. This can lead to even top 500 players getting placed into matches with much lower level players, which is bad for several reasons. I'm defo switching next season, and although the lag might in theory be worse there, plenty of disconnects still happen in ttek anyways.

    “Top players don’t gain from playing X rank”
    So this is for at most mid level or lower players
    If all players switch to takoroka, the match making will actually just match you up with the players around you anyway.
    And you don’t learn anything from top Japanese players
    Even if you do get match eventually, there is the time zone difference and the fact that maybe 1 out of 100 matches you will be placed against the top indeed, but the remaining 99 are also lower power ones

      Yes. But hey. You still practice against more players on your skill level

    I never reached S+ because i don't feel motivated playing Series Lately sense my first S+ Attempt on Fresh Season then 0-3, because of matchmaking, and if i do X Battles, i might go with Takoroka Devision, but i am in NA, i'm from the US Also. I wish i can keep S because of every season, D Rank to A+.

    Japan always gets their games a few months early so they’re gonna dominate. Same thing w fighting games, they’re always at least 2 months ahead

      TTek as a whole is a clown-fest. Calcs are inconsistent at best given a constant Win-Loss ratio, and the players within either play like 1700 or 2700; No in-betweens.
