Firstly, the crank case air should be vented to atmosphere, the only reason they vent to filter is for emissions. And secondly, it is a proven fact that a stock airbox with a high flow filter is the best combo for performance ( imagine sticking your head out of a car window at 70 mph and trying to take a deep breath... too much air will have an adverse affect on the AFR, thus loosing performance when moving at speed...) Obviously, this only applies if you're build is for maximum performance. if its for looks, anything you think looks good will do. Including velocity stacks... (You're not gonna kill your stage one 883 by adding a stack...) velocity stacks are used on a performance level too, but the length and bore are tuned to the engines needs. More internet misinformation. Do some research. This information I've shared is readily available. (Albeit a very dumbed down version.) 🍻
which air cleaner allows the most air in the bike not looking for looks but an air cleaner that makes upgrading from stock worth it for cooling purposes
Thank you for putting this vid together. Now I am sure everyone is asking you a 1001 questions, so if you do not get to this question, the no problem. I have an 08 Fat Bob with a 96 ci engine that I recently bought second hand. The previous owner has fitted a pair of Screaming Eagle slip on's, but that looks to be it. Asking the shop I bought the bike from RE an air cleaner and having to get a tuner, he said "don't worry, the EFI will take care of that and adjust accordingly". Personally I do not take what this shop says as fact and would rather double check anything they say. Is this guy not well informed, or would the onboard computer compensate and adjust accordingly with a better air cleaner than the stock unit installed? Thanks in advance.
I have a Vance and Hines V02 intake, chrome with black filter. The filter didn’t have any oil on it out of the box. Instructions don’t indicate to apply any after cleaning. So ....do I oil it🤔?
I have an arlen ness stage 1 big sucker. Would it be better to upgrade to a 90 degree one? I am soon getting a stage 2 torque cam upgrade by screamin eagle. Thank you
Had to improvise the other day and buy a shower cap during a downpour on my cone air filter. Restricted power heavily from almost no air flow. Bike is fuel injected thought and went about 6 miles. Think I did anything bad to the motor ?
I have a V&H on my 2015 road king . Its a VO2 naked air . I noticed that there is a 1/8 inch gap between the back plate and the filter. This should be a air tight fit correct? Just wrote V&H to see why this is like this. Maybe I am missing a part or something was made wrong.
Need to upgrade my S&S tear drop air filter assembly but unable to find one to fit and S&S carb super E. And bolt onto an evolution stock engine. So what can I do to complete this tast?
I have a 2021 Harley Fat Boy. You may know that it comes from the factory with a high performance air cleaner, but I ordered an upgrade to that ("extreme" Screamin' Eagle air kit) which is 40% more efficient. My question is; if I plan to install a basic full exhaust on this Fat Boy (whatever brand) and that's it, is there a downside to having this upgraded air kit (like it can't be tuned properly, poor gas millage, poor performance, won't work well with exhaust like Big Shots V&H pipes, etc...)? The advantage is that it will work better with a cam installation?
Man, I can't believe you said the "air needs to get vented back into the engine" that's just not true and mostly this is bad for the engine overall. That air coming out of the heads "Needs to get vented into a catch can and kept out of your engine". That oily mist is not good for the top of your pistons, especially with the oil that's being used in almost all bikes, synthetic. That oil doesn't burn up like the old oil used to, it bakes itself to the piston tops and your heads. But, I understand, it's a EPA thing, and we all know the EPA wants whats best for our engines!
@@jamessturtz728 You're right! Sometimes I forget who I'm talking to. With J&P I'd think they could offer a catch can option. It captures the bad stuff and lets the air flow. You never know though when you're talking EPA though. Ride safe Brother!
That would entirely depend on what your Stage IV components are made of. There is no way I would trust any engine build to a stock paper filter. - Patrick
An engine is an air pump but it will only flow as much air as the engine configuration will allow, not much point spending $ 500 on an air filter that flows 900 cfm when your engine will only use 500cfm, of course most of them look better than stock.
Thanks for summing that up. I just bought a Harley and was wanting to upgrade the filter but Jesus I can’t see spending that much money on something like that. It runs fine with a stocker
If you understand what "volumetric efficiency" is and where the air breather fits into the equation, you'll have a better understanding of what your ride will and will not be able to handle. Air breathers are only a part of the AFR equation
I have the TBR V Comp air cleaner. I wanna clean my element but how do I get that blue look for the element? I've seen how to clean elements and they always spray on red oil. But not blue. Any ideas?
The oil comes in different colors, generally red, blue, or black. When you clean the filter and re-oil it just get the color you want. In your case look for blue oil. It may not 100% be blue the first time but close, do not use extra oil just to change the color, it will drip through the filter and you will have a mess. The next time you clean it and re oil though it will most likely be 100% blue the 2nd time. But that color will fade with time and as it gets dirty it will turn gray or black anyways. Watch a video on how to clean and oil your filter. Keep the rubber side down 👊
It's more restrictive but you get more air? The truth is the original engineered air cleaner is the same performance. It's just all for looks, nothing more. Ask any professional racing mechanic. These lifetime filters are high maintenance.
Manufacturing cost's, CARB and emissions issues. There are a lot of reasons that apply to a bunch of parts on a HD. The aftermarket provides better parts options for almost everything. Seats, brakes, tires, exhaust etc
Mainly cost on their end and they probably fit the bill for the 'minimum' air flow requirement needed for the engine. With the re-usable filters, the oil acts as the filter because the openings of the mesh of the filter body are huge and that is why they allow so much airflow. With paper filters, the mesh is tighter, which does the filtering, but is more restrictive of air flow.

Am I the only one that thinks the aftermarket air cleaners are wayyy overpriced?
No you are 100% right. Pretty simple parts for $300 to almost $500, ridiculous!
If you open up your airfilter, a breather reroute would be a good thing to do at the same time. Keeps your airmixture and intake cool and clean.

Good question. I put one of these on a couple of bikes and don't recall any oiling instructions.
It is oiled from the factory. It only needs to be very light oil. Something to keep in mind when re-oiling your filter.

Great video andinformation!
Where can I find the info on what jetting to use when replacing the intake?
Your local bike shop should be able to help.
You have to find out the right jet by yourself by experimenting and reading the spark plug...
If I do slip-on exhaust and a high flow air cleaner with the fp3 do I have to take the bike to Harley to have the ECU reflashed?
No. That's what the FP3 is for.
Is that rain sock waterproof? If so no air is getting in rendering it useless.
