    I have a comment. I have twenty five years as a tractor trailer operator.Now... I went over this over and over again. This company has been at this for many many years. I am shocked that nobody did the math once the load crested the hill the weight became 10 times greater. That being said,Why didn't the trailer brakes hold there was sufficient weight on the trailer for it to stop. The way the lead tractor was behaving is as if the trailer brakes were not even connected which by today's technology makes no sense because they just wouldn't release. And the rear tractor was using a chain to control the load when it became taught instead of a tow bar. And no one bothered to clear the road ahead and there was plenty of space next to the structure in the distance. A lot went wrong here and that machine is no toy.

      @bulruq 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You missed the fact that the brakes WERE adequate to lock up the wheels! The braking problem was because of the dirt and gravel road. Other than that you are correct about the comedy of errors going on here.

      the wheel on the trailer were still rolling, aka the brakes failed. the only stoping force this had was engine braking from both trucks.

    I agree I would have let the brakes off and let it roll. I have had 200,000 lb coal trucks push me like that you have to let the brakes off pick up a little speed and stay ahead of it but not let it control you and you control it. I think the pusher truck could have helped more. But at least no one got hurt that's the most important thing. This accident could have been a hell of a lot worse

      mostly correct, Kevin. The driver of lead tractor, should have just ' let 'er go.....to save himself from jacknifing....and poor leadership, leaving vehicles on the road lower down below....oh well. My 2 cents... Most of the comments are as stupid as this accident. The ONLY this that would have prevented this is working trailer brakes. Too much load weight for two trucks alone to stop on that loose surface period. They actually lucked out that it stopped without gaining speed. This was the best possible outcome and no lives lost. I feel like the top heavy load would have broke the tie downs and been ejected at a high speed. I bet if any of them still have a job they test brakes before they are needed next time. I know I would have if I was moving something like this (after watching this video) but probably would have ASSUMED like they did that everything was working... Very easy to watch this and judge and comment. If you have all the brake lines attached it should work... Right?? one would think. I'm sure everyone on here physically checks to see the calipers are pushing the pads against the rotors every time before they drive by the comments I have read. If you live on a hill do you hit your brakes before you actually need them every day just to be safe and test them? We all get in our vehicles and drive and know when we hit the brake pedal they will work. Why not? They worked yesterday... Again. Very easy to judge this video. Learn from other people's mistakes is the best way to live life. You might live another day.

    Never been a part of moving this kind of load but as a traffic controller we are taught about spotting and distance to the load being moved. rule of thumb is outside of "oh shit it went bad" zone plus room to retreat. Lots of people lollygagging and way to close to the load. Road ahead should have been completely clear and the speed of load kept much slower initially.

    Off the brakes, back on when your straight, off again, back on, you will get down the hill faster but without dumping the load. Additionally this was a result of poor site preparation. Low traction surface plus too steep a grade plus inexperienced driver. you get a crane over the side.

    stupid question but did the trailer actually have brakes or did they fail... seems like a pretty obvious outcome lol. If traction was an issue for the trailer then wouldn't it have been locking up aswell. I couldn't see traction being an issue with that much weight on it spread across a large contact patch.

    If only the first driver had kept his wheels spinning, he would have been able to keep the direction he wanted. The rear drive could have locked up his truck to slow it down a little until they hit the flat ground. Some people..

    • @AlwaysBored123
      @AlwaysBored123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. They probably could have rode that out if the back had locked his wheels up while the front steered towards safety. Then again there's no telling what would've happened if it got bouncy or if someone was in the way. All in all this was a pretty good outcome I'd say.

  • @glengebert
    @glengebert 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As the trailer crested the hill, the weight of the trailer wheels was mostly on the rear ones. The front ones without any weight are locked up under braking. The lead tractor is going to lock up easy with relatively little weight on the drives. The loss braking traction at the beginning lead to the runaway. Speed was building quickly; and control was easily lost. I had wondered why the driver did not lift off the brakes and attempt a straight threshold controlled run down as the Forman was indicating him to do; but just at the end you see the path being blocked by a white truck hauling a crane boom. There should have been no traffic at all in the path of travel for this move. What I originally thought was driver error. I now think was a driver with no place to go and running out of options. Might also have been in too low a gear on the planetary drives causing too much braking force on the drive wheels leading to an imbalance in the braking force being applied to the trailer. Lifting off the foot valve and grabbing the independent hand valve (if available) would have also been good. LOL, so easy for us all to armchair drive this in hindsight! I wonder how long it took the driver to stop shaking after this?

    Never had an accident like that but I that exact feeling. Coming down a really long grade and there were flashing yellow lights telling you there was a traffic light ahead. I started gear down and braking but the hill was steeper and load heavier than I thought. I started blowing my horn and flashing my lights. Nobody moved. I was able to stop but it was on the other side of the intersection. I guess I wasn't the first truck to do this. Yes, skid marks are a real thing.

    @justforever96 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, I wish all cameramen were this good! Didn't shake the camera once, kept it on the action instead of dropping it and freaking out, didn't even start yelling and carrying on. Thumbs up for that alone! As for the accident, I don't know. Someone says it was because the truck at the bottom arrived and was in the way. It doesn't appear to have moved, you can see the door open and the driver walking around; if it had been there so long, why didn't they notice it before they got onto the slope? But, on the other hand, the place it's parked doesn't appear to leave any room for the crane to get past, so I don't know. Maybe it did just show up.
    I also think that the chain they had the second truck attached with seems really small. Wouldn't a bigger chain or drawbar be better? The driver was kind of dumb to jump out like that too. Did he think the crane was going to fall uphill on him or what?
    Last, I love those trucks; I wish all trucks looked like that. Modern trucks look like Toyota Priuses.

    the driver was getting hand signals from the guy on the ground. this may have caused him confusion and led to improper braking when he should have just let it go. The white truck in front of him may have been another concern that led him to make the wrong decision. Does anyone else find the very small steel cable connecting the second truck to the trailer worrisome?

    Why did the second truck driver jumped out of his truck, he didn't seem to be in a very dangerous situation?
