Several generations of both sides of my family - including me in high school and college - worked in denim mills and garment factories, and beginning with my grandparents' generation, we've worn denim our entire lives. The weaving mills and cutting and sewing companies we worked for made fabric and garments for many brands, but Levi's has always held a special place for my generation. Most of the mills are not only closed but all the production equipment was also sold and the mills demolished. While I wish the mills and garment factories could return, they will not. I enjoy this series immensely because it reminds me of things I used to know and revives many fond memories.

This is Levi's best video. It is chock full of interesting and technical information rather than marketing. I have been wearing Levi's, mostly 501s, since the late 1960s, have studied them closely, and have a very large vintage collection. I think mid-weight Levi's are better than lightweight Levi's jeans. The reason shrink-to-fit 501s are better than pre-shrunk is after washing STFs are approximately 10% heavier. The raw denim of shrink-to-fit 501s becomes baby soft after 3 washings. Being stiff is not an issue because STF 501s were never intended to be worn unwashed! That is a modern style like wearing your baseball cap backwards.

Thanks for the great video! I’m looking to purchase some denim fabric that most closely resembles the original unwashed hard denim Levis’s I used to buy in the 70’s and 80’s. Do you have any direction for me? Thx!

The standard Levi's like in the 80s never had enough crotch room for men and women. We would stretch the seams. Look great without pain.
