While that is true if you had more extreme settings I believe the difference would be more noticeable. I assume the intent is to get as similar tones as possible though
The Laney Ironheart held its own against the Savage and the Mesa. Impressive and highly underrated beast of an amp. Wonder if the used market prices for the Iron Heart variants will go up after this video.
To me that proves once again that a major part of the sound is in the cab and that many modern high gain amps sound very similar. They sound great though…
I tried this with my eyes closed and couldn’t really tell the difference between any of them, little things yes but there was no major give or take away until the cab was changed. Goes to show how much we listen with our eyes
Ola did this test a while back with few high gain amps where only amp would change and the conclusion was that the sound didn't change all that much between the amps. So it's not really surprising. I have a 5150 and I'm not buying another amp for metal tones ever, unless some drastic revolution in sound comes along.
Hanx for this upload! I own a engl Victor Smolski and this amp is doing almost any sounds that I`m need. Instead of the Malcom Young sound. This is only running with a cranked old Marshall and a really accustic sounding Gretsch. Thankful that I got this all together at the age of 52, so you still got some years to fit this. Greetings from Germany.
Wish there were more videos out on this guitar. I absolutely love it but most of what’s out there is on the 6-string version and I get they’re pretty much the exact same thing but still 😔 have a Legator opus 7 so I’m hooked on 7-string tele style guitars now so this one is gonna be the next purchase for sure!!! ❤ keep rockin man!! 🤘 maybe send one to me for test and evaluation and a TH-cam vid? 🥺👉👈😂
Love this! People play with their eyes, not their ears, and this proves it. :) Suggestion: Bring in the biggest amp designers in the world (Friedman, Michael Soldano, etc), blind fold them, then play 10 amps back to back . If they can pick which is their amplifier they win $1,000,000.
@@YaYousef5 th-cam.com/video/hnRIWxCdU6I/w-d-xo.html Friedman and Laboga also got it right. But quite a few didn't, which was a bit surprising. I do think that most serious amp builders would know their own amps though. I've been building some amps myself and when you're in to it with tweaking the sound etc you definitely hear the difference. However you must know what cab your using. As Ola stated in the video, the cab is even more important.
@@guitarded7131 Great link and there are many videos emerging now that show how much more of a difference the cabinet-microphone combination makes (or an impulse response). The amp itself provides subtler differences in terms of voicing and gain style.
It will be fun if this was aaall types of amp: 5w crap/good amp, joyo zombie 2, fender deluxe, Nux china processor with cab impulse, nintendo speacer output, or smth else and else and else. It was fun! Thanks Ola and that Dude for your job!
Blindfolded sound tests where you guess whats what is extremely hard for a number of reasons. The most difficult of all of them is getting nervous. When your nervous it's really hard to hear what your actually hearing. Also testing with the fishman fluence is also not conducive to hearing what your hearing. But the nerves, the fear of being wrong totally kills your ears perception. That ENGL is da bomb.
What a nice comparison! I'm actually the lucky owner of #1 and #2. Two absolute beasts and they can be used for so many good sounds. Also the Laney only costs about 600€ new, which is pretty good considering the sound and all the functions! But as Ola said, the tone is by 80% up to the cabinet/speakers.
Well that was unexpected. I just knew for sure you would get the savage and the roadster. I figured it would be instant too.... this is an interesting thing to see happen. Taking visual out can really sway your thought.... this is fun af
I think it went really well, and demonstrated that even with lots of experience, we are easily fooled by our expectations and biases. Better to say which Amp sounded best, and then find out which one it was. That was fun. Thanks
LOVE LOVE LOVE these videos, would be amazing if it would become a regular thing on your channel. Very entertaining and also an awesome way to hear some different gear.
Having to ID a Laney Ironheart while blindfolded is just downright evil -- there are so many high gain sounds that you can mimic with that thing. I think you once mistook one for a Dual Rec in a "guess my rig" video.
So much diversity in the tones there surprised me omg I'm in love with the engl.. wish they bring back the silver w red tube lights for the mark 2... looks like it's a fire furnace window to hell
Just reminds me of the comments you used to get/still get of "Every amp you play sounds the same" Aside from the low end on the Mesa, i didn't hear a massive difference between any of these amps through that cab. RIP Used Ironheart prices after this
MY 2 CENTS Just a friendly suggestion. Passive pickups and a 6 string in maybe drop D would allow the character of the amps to come through and make it a little for fair to Ola. I personally have a much harder distinguishing tonal characteristics the lower tuning I go. And actives can make feeling the amp and it’s responsiveness to touch/compression more difficult as well.
I have to tell you, I posted the lyrics for Means to an end and told my co-worker it was the lyrics for the non radio friendly 2:nd part of "If tomorrow never" comes by Ronan Keating. first Laney I've ever heard that sounded metal to me. Ola, here's and idea for an upcoming segment. How about trying some solid state amps, now that everyone is panicking about a tube shortage due to current world events. Everyone tests tube amps to death, but most people either cant afford them, or can't justify the cost. Just a SS amp with a boost and a noise gate. What say the Ola fans???
I was miking the ironheart for a recording last Year, i didnt like it much through the orange cab we used... through the mesa it wasnt really better... i would never think that it sound like my 5150... it got these mids i dont like.
@Ola where can I find a place to purchase that exact 7 string tele model? Can only find the six string versions and the black and red 7 strings but the natural is much more my speed 👀
I love my Ironheart (recording a full album with it right now) and I love to see it here and the positive comments too. It also has a really nice clean channel (and I love post-rockish ambience and such).
The Fishman actually sounds great through the Mesa Roadster. The Savage's distortion sounds "clippy", if that makes sense - as if you were running distortion into distortion, or something. And the Laney could use a bit more low end... not sure if pre or post gain, though...
The Laney is quickly becoming one of my favorite high gain tones from any amp, sounds pretty brutal. Also, why does the ENGL sounds like it's sagging? Anything failing or is it just their thing?
@@tusharjamwal it's not a tube amp thing exclusively and I'm no electrical engineer, but sagging is when there's not enough supply voltage to an electrical component, which makes it operate below its normal capacity and also comes with some artifacts in the case of sound amplification.

I have the 60w irt and its definitely a good value, mine i think is older... the Laney logo is different... not sure if anything changed there.
All 3 sound nice a thick , would love a Mesa Rectifier and Laney.
KSE have some great album tones with this amp. It has been a sleeper for a long time.

My dream guitar used to be the Ibanez RG721RW, but I think this Solar just took its place
