Mike Evans was the only Lionel for me. I could not stand his replacement. He had that high pitched voice and just didn’t have the charisma that Evans had.
I liked Mike in the role best but I didn't dislike Damon. Damon said that he didn't want to disrespect Mike's portrayal of Lionel so instead he played the character a different way.

God bless Mike Evans who passed at the young age of 57. His talent merited more and better roles than he received. Norman Mailer giving him his walking papers when he asked for more airtime was tragic. Finally after decades of being sidelined he suffered throat cancer, a horrible way to go. Mike was a great talent and deserved better treatment.

Yes, I read an article where he (Damon Evans) admitted that he was gay. In fact, he stated that he hated to play the role of Lionel. He only played the role to please his parents who was hoping the role of being Jenny's boyfriend would make him go strait. He also stated that when they (Norman Lear) released him and brought the other Lionel back (Mike Evans), he was so happy to leave the show.
