- It's one thing to read about the Lincoln assassination; it's another to stand two feet away from where President Abraham Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. When you visit Ford's Theatre, you are standing where one of the most important events in American history took place. While many people are aware that President Lincoln was shot here, many may not be aware that he was taken across the street to the Petersen House, where he died the next morning. In this video, you will learn the story behind the Lincoln assassination as we visit not only Ford's Theatre, but also the Ford's Theatre Museum (where you can see the actual murder weapon) and the Petersen House.

It is indeed beautiful, but what a shame the theater was closed after the assassination, completely gutted, and used as storage space, offices, and a museum. All of its original interiors lost and what we see today is only a reproduction. 😔

I was there when it happened. It was brutal. Everyone was laughing thinking it was part of the play.
3:36 $100,000 in 1865 was equivalent to $1,674,865 today.
The actual box was destroyed when the entire building was gutted during one of three restorations. The entire building was gutted, leaving only support beams. The building was used as a file repository for years. It was a document storage building until it was decided to recreate the Theatre. When you visit the building, understand that the original interior was lost long ago.
That is quite unfortunate. They should have preserved as much as they could.
@@AndysAwesomeAdventures yes, I agree with you. It seems there were two schools of thought following the assassination. The first was that it would have been a further assault on a nation, already in morning, to memorialize the place where the terrible crime occurred. The second, sought to preserve the entire building for its historical value. I must admit, I have held both positions at various times in my life. By preserving the place where the assassination took place, do we celebrate the President, or does such preservation elevate the assassin?
Least *not at this location* we have the original chair Lincoln sat in at the time of his death. So all is not completely lost.

I met a Lincoln collector at a collectibles show who had a playbill from April 14, 1865 from My American Cousin signed by all four of the conspirators who were hanged. He said a relative of his was a guard at the prison and just before the prisoners were led out to the gallows he had each of them sign the Playbill. Now THAT is a fantastic piece of Lincoln memorabilia! He said he was taking the Playbill to Antique road so when it was in his area. I can't find any episode of that show with his item.

I went to a production of "A Christmas Carol" in Ford's Theater in the early 2000's. I seemed to remember that they still had the original flag bunting in front of the Presidential Box - that had the torn holes in it caused by Booth. It definitely was not new looking like what is shown in the video.
One of the things that I remember about the Petersen house bedroom, where Lincoln died, is that it is a very small room. I haven't been there for 30 years, but I notice that it is more restricted now.

50 yrs ago I touched and visually examined Lincoln’s blood. It was a moment I will never forget.

Just "making the jump" with nothing going on is MUCH different than jumping after shooting the president and stabbing his guard.

Booth didn't break his leg in the jump. He broke it when his horse tripped during the getaway.

Charles A Leale, the first doctor to arrive at the presidential box died in 1932, not 1928 like stated in the video.
Is that the chair Lincoln was seated in, or has that object also been lost?
I believe the original chair is in the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
Interesting Abraham Lincoln was shot on the night of April 14th and died the morning of April 15th. Titanic hit the iceberg April 14th and sank April 15th

I've been in the Capital, the Supreme Court Building, and even the White House, but not THIS. Yeah, this place is definitely important history. I wish I can go there.
Um, dude? Lincoln was dead for all intents and purposes before that young man stuck his finger into the skull. They kept him breathing until after dawn through some not completely terrible care, but his respirations kept sliding out of control, and his eyes slowly suffused and protruded; he was gone because of the sheer extent of injury to the brain.

I believe that the picture of George Washington was there the night Lincoln was assassinated. That might even be the original one.
Back in the 60s the bedroom where he died in had a much smaller bed with a pillow under glass and you could see it was very old and tired with blood stains

I was at both places MANY decades ago. Strange seeing it again in my later years. I still remember it looking the same as it is here in the video.
I think if i remember right, the bed was to your right when you walked in the door where they layed him down.

Yes, as I mentioned in the video, because the owner of Ford's Theatre had hired Booth to perform there a few times before, no one gave a second thought to seeing him enter the building on that night.
I saw Godspell there, back in, what 1972. A fine show! Went there on at least one school trip for the tour too.

How much of the Theatre is original?
“Almost all of the interior structure of the theatre was removed when it was converted to a fireproof warehouse in 1866. More modifications were made in the 1890s following the building collapse, and again in the 1920s with the creation of the Lincoln Museum. Today, the only original parts of the theatre building include the front façade, structural elements in the roof framing and attic, and some smaller portions of the exterior brick walls on the north and south sides. On the front of the theatre facing 10th Street, several window openings were altered (evident from the change in brick color), leaving the southernmost set of windows as the only ones that are completely original. Some repair work was also done to repair the bowing front façade in the 1866 renovation.”
Well, that's very disappointing.
So, just so I am clear, will ask again, when they say, "This is the theater box where Lincoln and his group were sitting..." it is not? I know the original chair is at the Henry Ford Museum; but the interior of the theater has all been rebuilt?

I know that the picture of George Washington, the sofa where Major Rathbone was sitting, and a carved-back, cane-seat parlor chair, all in the Presidential box, and one of the flags there are all originals from the night of the Lincoln assassination.

Actually Fords Theater was completely gutted and in poor condition, then was restored to appear as it did in 1865

So uh this just popped into my mind. Lincoln was Assassinated on April 14, 1865 the R.M.S Titanic sank on April 14, 1912 that’s 47 years apart. Could anyone have help saved the people on the life boats of the titanic or died from the sinking of the titanic who saw lincoln get shot? I guess the world will never know.
Also the last photo of John Wilkes Booth is apparently him laying on the deck of the farm house (he was moved to the deck from the barn, he was still alive in the photo if im not mistaken) and it’s the only photo that can’t be found of him to date.

From the paintings that I’ve seen depicting this event, Lincoln would have been sitting on the right hand side if you’re looking at the box from the front (in other words, if you’re looking at the box as if you were sitting in the audience). That’s not the actual chair, however. The actual chair that President Lincoln was shot in can be seen at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. I hope this helps! Have a nice day!

I believe the pillow they layed Lincolns head on is at the Henry Ford Museum as well. At least it was there the last time i went there decades ago. His clothes were there too.
