I reckon they should stock the both lakes with Macquarie Perch. It’s made me so happy to know that they are coming back and it would help their population grow more if they hade a few more lakes to settle in other than Dartmouth.

Have caught quite a few trout cod here several being keepers. i have found cheese to be the best bait. stock with yellowbelly and perch but leave the trout cod to grow..
I get my notification an hour later for some reason. Mayby because i am living in the top end. Good pic of the trout cod. No carp stocking thats for sure.
Back Home in SA our reservoirs are stocked with golden, silver and Murray cod. and over the years has become very successfull. Its nice to catch healthy stocked fish.

That would be great, provided they put some recreational fish in there too, like yellowbelly and Silver Perch. I am actually going to be stocking some small bodied native fish into the Winton Wetlands in a couple of weeks.

Hey mate, so I'm assuming you have used the double hook type frog before, how do you find the hook up rate with the cod??? I have tried that style hook for bass many times, I find they have a worse hook up rate than a single weedless hook. The few frogs I had like that I have removed the double hooks and changed them to single hooks. As for the video well done catching a nice little trouty. I would like to see yellowbelly, Murray cod, silver perch, Macquarie perch and catfish. We have lots of trout dams I would definitely like to see more natives stocked in dams. If one did end up a trout lake then they should put some tiger trout and brookies in there as well. We have 3 lakes with tiger trout now and they are a cool looking species, would be awesome if you had a chance to catch them and same goes for some brookies, I wish we had some brookies closer to us... Awesome work as always mate 👍
Thanks so much mate. Lake Sambell is already stocked annually with rainbow trout in winter and is hugely popular. These lakes are suitable for both, trout in the winter and natives in the warmer months. I have only used the spro frog a couple of times. I have had a couple of boofs from cod, but they were small fish and didn't hook up. I haven't used them enough to form an opinion sorry. What I do like is that they are very very buoyant and easy to work
@@robbiefishing you should try the new Daiwa kicker curly bigs when the season comes in 👍 They are also super buoyant and simple to use, they recommend a 4/0 weedless hook, I have been using a 3/0 for big bass and having no dramas 👍 The best part just a slow retrieve works perfectly. The new keitech frogs would also be a killer on the cod I reckon 👍 PS if it works for both natives and trout then that's very good in my opinion, having all species to target is great, they still should stock some more trout species though 👍

Thanks mate. Despite the altitude the water actually gets very warm up there, and icy cold in winter. Yellas definitely thrive in there, and trout fo really well in the winter.
I've only ever caught small trout cod from kerferd. Along the dam Wall. Lots of casts between the fish. Can't wait for yellowbelly stocking though, I do love a feed of yellows. Thank you for the update, love all your vids.
Pretty dopey decision to stock them in the first place. No structure at all. Always saw huge numbers of fingerlings holding up near the drain on the other side of the wall. Nowhere to hide from the redfin.

G'day Al, I am with you mate. Being an old school angler from the 80s I absolutely love redfin. Sadly though many people despise them. They are detrimental to the recruitment of native fish because they are such aggressive feeders. When fisheries stock fingerlings into a waterway with redfin, often they work on an average of 1% survival rate. That's 1 fish in every hundred that survives the redfin onslaught. I understand their argument and why they don't like them, but what does annoy me is when people growl at me for releasing them. If you pull out one Patterson's Curse bush, the rest of the weeds in the paddock don't die. It's a similar story with redfin, so I prefer to release the ones I don't want in the hope that they grow big.

What a beautiful fish! Such a shame it never really worked in the lakes. In five days I'll be at the new place at Saddleworth in SA. I went out for one last fishing trip with a mate the other day. Off the coast of Largs and Semaphore, got heaps of gar, some crabs, a squid and four good sized King George whiting. (Sorry if I already told you this, it's a blur with packing up and moving stuff) Best news is I've identified a trout fishing spot 10km from our new home! Undalya on the Wakefield River. I'm sure there are yabbie spots around the place as well. I hope I can get into some soon.

Hey mate I would absolutely love that. From what I understand, Brook Trout require really cold water. Despite this lake being 600 metres above sea level, it is quite shallow and still gets quite warm in the summer so I don't know how the Brookies would go.
Thanks buddy. I use to catch rainbows in there but haven't fished it for a long time. Lake Kerford use to be stocked with Rainbow trout that provided great trout fishing in the winter months. They will definitely be stocking natives for the warmer months. 👍👍

I saw a decent trout cod (id guess around 40cm) in the shallows at Lake sambell yesterday while fishing for redfin. He just sat for a few minutes and let me throw a few plastics infront of his face and wasn't one bit interested, very docile and busy blending in. I thought it looked a little different from a murray cod the second I spotted him. Bloody awesome! Love your work Robbie.

Lovely lake! Shame about the trout cod not taking off, but why not put them where they will thrive and hopefully help decrease the carp numbers. Something left field but maybe australia bass?
That would be cool, but I doubt that it would ever happen as it is outside their natural range. There are a number of private farm dams stocked with bass in the area but I doubt whether fisheries would ever authorise that.
Well I hope they follow through with what they've said. I dont live in the area but a resivour here in Castlemaine, they stopped stocking with macquarie perch 10 yrs ago and said they'd restock it with other fish and they haven't been back! Reached out several times but nothing. I've had terrible experiences with VFA which is disappointing considering the great work they do around the state.. @@robbiefishing I'm not to sure, the water is fabulous, very clean, very deep and big enough it was stocked with cod but they didnt take either and so they were removed but a 1.2m one was caught 5yrs ago. They recently put golden perch in it but I haven't seen any or heard of any being caught and it's only 5 mins away so I'm frequently there. I'm going to reach out and try organize a phone call and see if that helps but it would be such a perfect hatchery for trout plus it'd give the kids something to catch rather than the odd redfin or carp now thanks to the floods.
Gotta love Fisheries Victoria. I so hope they have success and bring Trout Cod back to somewhere successfully. Purrumbete and Bullen Merri would suit nicely. Same same for Australian Grayling, our indigenous salmonid.

Hi mate, I am unsure where you live but I assume it is somewhere cold. They already stock a lot more natives than trout. Trout are not stocked into streams at all in Victoria any more, except maybe a few coastal flowing streams. In a pace like Lake Kerford there is plenty of room for both. Trout for the winter months and natives for the summer months.
Would love to see more yellow belly that's for sure in both lakes and silver perch. Cat fish would be great in there can't see happing at all. Been to both places once and had caught trout cod in both I'll be honest I took one home to give it a try and was quite good haven't been back since then
Yeah. Been there and had a few bites and often not much apart from a few small trout cod. For restocking I'd like to see silver perch exclusively. Fast growing, and lkely to thrive in there while cleaning out weeds. 🌱🪱🐟

I think the lake should be stocked with blue marlin as it is a small and fun to catch on light gear and super easy for the kids😂😂😂

All natives including eels and ell tail catfish , freshwater clams,charax destructors, charax suppresses and freshwater shrimp for good ecology 👍💯👌

Lovely lake! Shame about the trout cod not taking off, but why not put them where they will thrive and hopefully help decrease the carp numbers. Something left field but maybe australia bass?
That would be cool, but I doubt that it would ever happen as it is outside their natural range.
There are a number of private farm dams stocked with bass in the area but I doubt whether fisheries would ever authorise that.
Well I hope they follow through with what they've said. I dont live in the area but a resivour here in Castlemaine, they stopped stocking with macquarie perch 10 yrs ago and said they'd restock it with other fish and they haven't been back! Reached out several times but nothing. I've had terrible experiences with VFA which is disappointing considering the great work they do around the state..

Thanks so much mate. They use to stock it with yellowbelly, so I am quite confident they will continue to do so.
I wonder what is happening with the lake at Castlemaine? Could it be a water quality issue? I don't know the area at all.
@@robbiefishing I'm not to sure, the water is fabulous, very clean, very deep and big enough it was stocked with cod but they didnt take either and so they were removed but a 1.2m one was caught 5yrs ago. They recently put golden perch in it but I haven't seen any or heard of any being caught and it's only 5 mins away so I'm frequently there. I'm going to reach out and try organize a phone call and see if that helps but it would be such a perfect hatchery for trout plus it'd give the kids something to catch rather than the odd redfin or carp now thanks to the floods.

Yep, I would love to see yellow belly and silver perch, of course the trout are a no brainer (or should I say yes brainer). The catfish are a gold medal 🥇 idea 🏆 love it.

I had a big whinge in the last vfa survey that they have to stock more native fish and less trout cause all I have near me is trout and Redfin, I have to drive close to an hour and a half to get a native…
Hi mate, I am unsure where you live but I assume it is somewhere cold.
They already stock a lot more natives than trout. Trout are not stocked into streams at all in Victoria any more, except maybe a few coastal flowing streams.
In a pace like Lake Kerford there is plenty of room for both. Trout for the winter months and natives for the summer months.
Would love to see more yellow belly that's for sure in both lakes and silver perch. Cat fish would be great in there can't see happing at all. Been to both places once and had caught trout cod in both I'll be honest I took one home to give it a try and was quite good haven't been back since then

Yeah. Been there and had a few bites and often not much apart from a few small trout cod. For restocking I'd like to see silver perch exclusively. Fast growing, and lkely to thrive in there while cleaning out weeds. 🌱🪱🐟

@@robbiefishing yeah I see on their draft restocking plan of a mixed fishery. Will take a while before established no doubt. Looking forward to its improvement, as its a nice peaceful place to take kids fishing, and easily accessible.
