One of my favorite things about these Japanese bands is that it feels like they have no respect for genre separation, and what it does is allows them to kick down doors that would never open to those of us who are more entrenched in that genre mindset. They just take what is good and what works and they make it sound and feel amazing.

i'll never forget seeing the vocalist of Mass of the Fermenting Dregs Spotify-share a Limp Bizkit song on her Instagram, because it's the perfect demonstration of what you're saying.

this man is going to completely snap once he finally gets around to the likes of BiSH, Passcode, and Maison Book Girl
then he'll listen to Sokoninaru one time and just cease to exist. lol
on a more serious note, something crucial about Japanese music is: they can mix and match genres and sounds with zero care about the cultural context that Western artists always bind themselves with, which is the same thing that set Kpop into its own realm
Japan is so far ahead of the curve in nearly every single realm of music, it's insane. You could go through almost any genre and you'll find multiple bands/artists that are just as diverse/broad as this one in each of them
at this point it's legitimately starting to feel like Japan is having a musical revolution on the same level as their post-war electronic revolution, if not larger
i dove in around ten years ago and it's yet to stop getting better

In multiple music genres (jazz, rock, pop and classical too), I am already hooked by some highly talented Japanese and Korean musicians/bands. And this one... Oh My Lord. This is insane. A pure concentration of talents. How can they do that? When you enter into this kind of musical universe, it is quite complicated to go back to the occidental music production.

Holy 💩! That opening blew my socks off! My reaction was very similar to yours, not knowing what to expect and getting hit with the 0-100 real quick! "Music doing music things" as you said
That vocal piece is fascinating, stripping the instrumentation away. Really lets her excellent phrasing shine which you pointed out. Good stuff. And then those darker vocals coming as hip hop/rock? This is great.
Uh-huh, yep. I agree with everything you said. I got goosebumps as well. And I'm having breakfast while watching those so I'm set for my picnic. I have nothing else to sat other than YES. Just YES to all of it. Crazy. I'm so glad Jamie found your channel, because now we all get to enjoy these gems you share with us.
I'm still a little tired this morning, but I'm about reasonably sure that several other personalities got into that and started giving in the back of my head. Definitely Butch started jamming out with some air guitar. That feeling of enjoying something with a headmate is unbeatable. It's going in the playlist!

Nice to see you reacting to a bit of Alt-Idol stuff, which is often discounted, sadly. You've picked a good introduction though; with Wagamama Rakia having a brilliant main vocalist and a legit rapper - Miri is known to occassionally take part in rap battles. Adding in the excellent production and no genre limitations it gives some great tracks and what looks like mad live shows, especially when they go EDM.
Look forward to some more of these and other groups like BiSH, Passcode and a multitude of others. There's also the godfathers of alt-idols BiS (the original incarnation) - th-cam.com/video/QJh5xAI_6Ig/w-d-xo.html

Thanks again, Chase, for another great analysis and reaction. You've introduced me to a lot of great music in the last few months, so I'm deeply grateful. I'm swimming through a lot of Japanese bands myself now too that I can't believe aren't international superstars. Wagamama Rakia (slight shudder - some big nights on Rakia) seems like a familiar name, but I definitely haven't heard of them before. The track was amazing, but I'm wondering who the musicians were. Like BabyMetal has the Kami band, I'm wondering who the people are behind the scenes, making the music.
I can't remember if you've done them before, but another amazing Japanese band you might want to try are Wagakki Band - Japanese Folk-Rock/Metal - not often heavy - who use a mix of modern rock instruments (standard drums, guitar and bass) with traditional Japanese instruments (wadaiko drums, koto, shamisen, shakuhachi flute) and traditional 'shigin' style vocals. They've been around for a while, but don't seem to play live very often. They are just starting to do international tours. The musical compositions, which always seem to provide space for all seven instruments plus vocals, should keep you interested and should keep the pause button warm. I'm not sure how their videos go with copyright, but there have been other reactions to them of the, "Oh wow, that was amazing!" type.
All of their stuff sounds amazing and they sound very similar live to their music videos. They started off doing 'vocaloid' covers, but now they do their own compositions, and have recently done some collaboration with Amy Lee from Evanescence (but I think they actually sound much better without her, and I like Evanescence). Yes, they have done some anime stuff aswell ('Valkyrie', at least).
Some earlier songs are 'A Tale of Six Trillion Years and One Night' and 'Tengaku', which both have good quality videos. More recent stuff is 'Ignite' (heavier, staccato vocals - almost rap?), 'Ikusa' (heavier, rock), Yoshiwara Lament' (more of a ballad), 'Hanabi'' (hooky pop), 'Senbonzakura' and 'Hoshidzukiyo' (crowd participation, folky pieces). 'Homura' and 'Chie no kajitsu' are usually done as live rock/metal instrumental intro pieces with just the western instruments, but the most common entry point to Wagakki Band (I suppose, their equivalent of Ghost Love Score at Wacken, 2013, for Nightwish) seems to be the double live video of 'Homura' (intro) + 'Akatsuki no ito', which some refer to as their anthem. Personally, I think you'll like 'Ignite', so I'd check that out first.

There's alot of interesting musical mashups and variety in the Chika Idol/Alt Idol scene. The whole thing is just a diverse mishmash of genres all topped with idol elements. You should check out Maison Book Girl, especially Kujira Koujou, they have a really distinct sound and fantastic mixing... I can't really pinpoint genres with them (I'm no good with genres anyways)... And their b sides are poetry recitals.
Neo Japonism is another great idol group, more conventional rock but still great, would recommend Subliminal from them.
For more electronic stuff cy8er is the gold standard, would recommend Hakuchumu , Migma shelter is also good., would recommend their song "Rabbido" .. Anyways there's so many groups it's just something one has to dive into.
Lastly, Inuwasi's "Crier" was my idol track of 2020, the mix of genres was executed so well in that song.
Wagamama rakia kind of stands out from the typical idol scene since they also brand themselves as a band and are more polished than most idol groups. Minami (the green haired lead singer) and MC Miri ( the rapper) are both super talented.
Anyways, love the analysis, pleasantly surprised, didn't expect a reaction video to have so much info 👍👍

a quick edit: if you like the mixing of genres, j-pop with j-metal like I do, I´ve got a recommendation ( six years old, but possibly influential on this band) a drop of joker - beat maker th-cam.com/video/Qc68PkOYvOw/w-d-xo.html they got so many good bands with energy and passion over there, so amazing.

i think you’d love melody if you haven’t already, it kinda sounds anthem-like, minami has majority of the lines but her voice is incredible so i can’t even be mad lmao, it’s definitely one of my favorite songs of theirs. it’s insane to think they barely have 15k followers you’d think they’d have WAY more

WILD! I'm no professional but you pick up a few things, and listening to this was an absolute treat. I was stunned by what the main vocalist did--I kept debating in my head whether it the melody was tuned in production or not, and by the end I had to admit that there was no way, that vocalist must have perfect pitch. You mentioned her cry-break at the end of a chorus--that's why I decided it couldn't have been tuned. She was doing incredible stuff like that throughout the whole piece, and it was so intentional/dynamic/frequent that it would be impossible to edit those vocals at all without destroying the work between the tones.
This is officially my longest comment ever. I loved it, great work Chase!
