There’s one thing I want to add for context since I didn’t mention it in the video.
Overnight in the bivouac, I had a really bad gut feeling.
So I was really debating if I should even attempt the climb, but as the morning came, I decided I’m at least gonna check out the conditions… and as you saw the snow was horrible, and that just confirmed my decision to turn around.
    Always listen to your gut!

I was doing a deep back country trip with more novice friends a few years back. Had a bad gut feeling and made the veteran decision to turn around immediately, despite my friends objecting. The weather forecast was clear but I "felt" a storm coming- we had to perform a river crossing to get back, so I didn't want to chance it. By the time we were 2/3rds the way back, we could look behind us and see the mountain we had been on. It was surrounded in dark sheets of rain, with many lightning strikes near the route we had taken. After we returned home we learned there had been a flash flood that took out several bridges and washed away some campers several miles downstream. Always listen to you gut indeed!

Wonderful - alone in the beautiful , peaceful mountains as usual! The snow livened things up, and the approach to the bivy looked sketchy. Again, a marvellous video, and l must comment on the efforts to get shots of you going ahead. To do it in the dark, and then having to go back for the camera shows your determination to produce great videos. On a different note, do you leave a note in your car describing your route in case of an emergency? Just a thought. So, thanks for another peek into your enchanted world of silent, empty mountains. Thank you.

@andrazegart In the USA the "rock piles" are known as "cairns" or "ducks". Ducks is more technically correct as cairns has as specific legal definition related to size for mining claims (they have to be much bigger). That said nearly everyone calls them cairns anyway.
That type of snow (small soft beads) is what I call "graupel". People who don't spend time in the mountains probably won't be familiar with that word though.

    • @allaprima

Yeah I would definitely wake up if someone was outside.

    • @andrazegart
      @andrazegart  ปีที่แล้ว +4

@Murluv hahah I often think about that, because there is no other way out.
And if someone randomly decided to lock you in, then you’re pretty much stuck in there 😅 and usually there is also almost no signal in there… 😬

Solo climbing has a number of advantages. For one thing, all the decisions are your own. When to start, what route, when to push, when to take a break, when to press on or when to bail. Thousands of microdecisions determine how the ascent turns out. Go light and fast or bring extra gear was seen in this video. There is also a wonderful serenity and focus to being all alone that is just hard to describe.
Acceptance of risk is part of climbing mountains. If one craves safety, it is "plain stupid" to climb mountains in the first place.
I have some great climbing buddies I enjoy going with as well.

Did you have any concerns that the door would freeze shut?

I don't know much about mountaineering, but isn't that an odd location for a shelter? or is the best position for a shelter from mountaineering point of view?

Just curious, why do you lock the door of the bivouac? To prevent the wind opens it?

One question (I actually don't know): why do you have a rope with you, it's not like there is someone that could belay you...

Meh, I skied all day in a blizzard with 70 mph winds and temps -20. Snow 25 feet deep.
