This has to be one of the best, most wholesome channels on TH-cam, it feels like just hanging out in the garage with a pal. I'm working on a 76 XLCH chopper myself.
My thoughts exactly. As soon as I seen it I knew id be making myself one. Then I thought, " one day ill be telling some kid that some good ol boy tought me that trick".
Another awesome video drummer!! We like hangin out with you in the shed! You have many interesting instruments to work with! I done the sprocket change on my old 79 Shovel, 23 and 48.. She was a beast. I have plans to do the same on my 77 Shovel that I’m working on now. Thanks for taking the time to share with us drummer! Always enjoy your ole school content brother,, You be good to yourself also brother! Blessings your way 🧷✌️
I wish I had you as a friend and neighbor my brother I ride Harleys and love them and I've been riding since I was 7 years old for 40 years now as far as working on them goes almost everything, it had a small block Chevy in and out know what to do but I rode rice on my life and never learned one thing about a Harley I never thought I would be fortunate enough to own one,I know this video is old but I try to keep up with you so keep up the good work brother and stay safe 🙏🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏻
I upgraded my 28-tooth front pulley to 31 teeth. It is a 2009 Sportster Custom with a belt drive. I gained 6mph on the freeway 62mph is now 68mph. Fantastic upgrade.
I tell people all the time, belts are for holding up pants. I'm running 21/48 on my 74 ironhead, I run a hardtail with a rear disc to have more options then the stock 51. Got rid of the belt on my 98 Softail and now run 23/48 chain drive which also allows me to run a 140 rear tire, completely different animal on the highway now, 5th is actually useful now. Dig seeing a dude still messing with ironheads, I am on my 5th one now. Subbed.
Built my own lift table to old to get up and down I even use it to clean my scooter and love it be 64 next month can't get up and down like I use to keep it between the mustard and mayo and rubber side down later GBU
When I had my 84 Iron head Sporty I put on a 1 or 2 tooth larger drive sprocket to lower the revs on the highway. It gave me a sweet spot at about 70. Before it came in about 65. Some little things can make a big difference.
Nicely done good video 👍🏻 I ride 94 FXR Building a hard tail 79 iron head myself it has an old girder front end Thanks for the good video Keep having fun bro! Every time I watch your video feels like I’m going over to hang out with a buddy !
Man I've been building my bike for 8 months now. Basically doing what I can as the money is good. Soon I'll have the entire thing mocked up and then strip it for paint which I'll do myself as I will do everything else. I love watching ur videos mean while to keep me going. Can't wait to get her on the road. Thanks for the awesome videos man. Keep turning em out! 🤘
I like that wooden floor jack. Now I'm thinking about how to rig up an extension pipe for my center stand. I don't have the muscle to lift the rear of the bike over that "hump" when putting the stand down. I have to park the rear tire on a 2x4 to assist me in that little bit of lift. It's a Honda CTX1300, total weight with my junk, 820+ lbs.
As usual mate it is an absolute pleasure watching your stuff. Everything about it is awesome from the editing to the way you make a story out of what your shooting. Outstanding mate. Ride safe brother and enjoy that new sprocket. ✌️🇺🇸🤘🇬🇧
Man I really love your videos. Honest hard working man and I’m glad you had those valve seats checked. Would have sucked to put it back together and still have the problem. Anyway. I love southern Mississippi weather. Gonna take a little run to Texas at the end of May and first week of June from Maryville Tennessee. Be blessed brother. Ride hard or stay home. 😂
I've been thinking about changing my gearing for a while but I finally did it, but i didn't do a 47 rear and 23 front, on my 1979 harley sportster ironhead I did a 22 front and a 45 in the rear and it still pulls like a champ and, big difference and much better for me, was scared to try a 23 in the front but shit now riding it feels like it can do it 💪 😎 🤙
love the video and content as always man! Thanks again for the response the other day about the computer and program you use to edit. went ahead hit my local best buy and picked up what I need!
Swapping the gearing was the first thing I did to my '86 sportster with a 4 speed trans and my '75 XLCH with the 4 speed... made it so much better to ride on the highway...
Good segment. I need to do a pulley change on my old twin cam 88. I need I bit more top end. And drop my rpms, just a bit. At 70, I'm at 3000 rpm, I'd like to get it down to 2500 rpm at 70.
Like that shinny sprocket course I'm all about my chrome and I know chrome don't get you home but the OW has never let me down OW ( other woman) LoL anyway keep it between the mustard and mayo and rubber side down later GBU
@@SaddleTrampTV I found it. Totally forgot about the extra wire. Had all the other stuff. Found all my tools at the flea market. Cheap. Thanks again for all your knowledge, shared to the next generation! Let's keep these old Ironheads going!!
Im working on a 74 ironhead xlch and I got compression and gas and got spark but the bike won't fire , I adjusted the time and still work fire , but cough through the carb. In the advice will be appreciated
I would give a thumbs up,but you're at that magic number of 666,and i didn't want to disrupt that lol. There are certain year bikes, were you can get a baker 6 speed for the sportster
Did you count threads on both sides of bike when you tightened chain?...misalignment ruins sprockets and shortens life of chain. I would have soaked chain in diesal for a few hours, cleaned with dawn dish water, dried and soaked in 30 weight overnite. wiped off then installed.
@SaddleTrampTV Finally got mine on the road thanks to a local shop and Registered! Thanks for all the great videos man. I did get that battery but ultimately it blew up (loose wire) ...oh well had it replaced. Keep up the vids ✌️
Tramp, you have a uncanny way of working on projects that I am also working on and interested in. I also was planning going to a taller gear in both my bone stock1970 and 1968 CH’s. After 55 mph the rpm’s and vibration are way to high to keep up with today’s traffic. I am going from a 20 tooth counter sprocket to a 23 and see what happens. I think the motors can pull a taller gear ratio just fine, but we will see!
SaddleTramp Thank you for the info , OK... I will go straight to a 24 tooth counter sprocket on my 68 and 70 XLCH’s. Did you have to add a few links to the final drive chain? Can you guess about how many R.P.M’s where reduced at 65 /70 mph? Thanks again.
When I first saw this video, I was thinking, that's what my 4 speed XLH883 needs. I took off my rear sprocket, and found that it's already a 46 tooth. Can I go down to 45 without issue?
Can't say for sure that you won't have any issues. Going too low (however low that is) will cause too much strain in the bottom end and transmission. When I ran my 4 speed 883 (before this motor), I ran a 22 tooth up front and a 48 tooth in the rear. That seemed to work best at the time.
Wow, thanks for replying! That was super fast. I'll look at my front sprocket first. Maybe I'll try a 45 rear, maybe I'll just stick with what I've got. I really wish I knew more about what's inside my $1600 Sportster. I know it's been heavily modified, but have no idea what's on it other than dual plug heads and a Mikuni HS40.
Hello I have a 1988 sportster 883 it revs pretty high at 60 mph ,so I never take it on the highway , would you recommend changing front and rear sprocket or just the front ? And how many teeth sprocket for rear would you recommend?
Which hardware do you use when filming handheld riding you bikes? I saw a little monostick dangling from your wrist somewhere. Keep up the great work. Excellent vibe! More ride (adventure) vids 👍🏻😎👍🏻😎👍🏻😎
Fixing to go with a 30 tooth pulley on my 971200XLC, the vibration starts to get going around 60 mph, hopefully the 30 over the stock 29 will help a little without getting sluggish...what ya think Tramp?

Exactly! Love that. Just got to get the grading done on the upper driveway and the shipping container dropped off, time for a bike shop.
I thought a smaller sprocket on the back would make it harder to do highway speeds the smaller the more engine speed
