Comeback Of The Tesoro Compadre - With Old Coins, Relics And Cash!

  • I decided to take my (modified) Tesoro "Compadre" metal detector with me that day. The main reason for that was its volume control knob (something the original version lacks of), a small coil and great iron unmasking abilities. It turned out to be a very good choice. I had confidence in the machine, which helped me to extract its full potential.
I was able to make a few nice finds. The small (shoe?) buckle was an (early) turning point needed for this type of environment. It gave me confidence and motivation.
when a detector matches the conditions and performs very well, it's a pleasure to use.
I found a few small coins, buckles and other relics. One coin turned out to be made of silver, which sometimes is difficult to tell. In this case, I realized it at home. The coin was covered with a very persistent crust and dirt on top of it. It looked almost like a river find, which was strange.
I cleaned the thin layer of dirt mechanically and stopped above the crust. I already made bad experience with similar crust a few years ago. I remember that it came off with the silver surface and left a hole in the coin. In this case, chemicals are the only way to get rid of it without (such) damage.
I used 5% of formic acid for ~ 15 minutes. It dissolved the crust to a point where you could see details on the coin. What was left, was a red layer of "something" that covered the black patina. I decided to stop at this point and leave it like it was.
The following (very informative) article covers this conservation method in great detail: www.jcms-journal.com/articles...
I was enthusiastic when I found this article a while ago, then skeptical after some tests. Now I went back to it with very good results.
I then rinsed the coin in tap water and placed it in distilled water with baking soda for another 20 minutes, to get rid of the acid.
I also found something that looks like a medallion. The surface seems a little bit strange (deformed), like it was in a fire. It's relatively heavy and the edge is shiny. It may be silver... I haven't cleaned it yet. Its age is a mystery to me. Somehow it "appears medieval", but...
It was a great hunt with lots of fun.
    Thanks for watching!

Hope you are on the mend. This was a super hunt, lots of nice varied finds. Hope to see the medallion when it is cleaned. The Paris buckle was great. Give my best to the assistants and a kiss to Pinky Toes.

I saw myself sitting and leaning against that ...garden wall? With a thermos of great coffee...cup in one hand, buckle in the other. Then seeing in my mind, that spoon laying where it will be noticed by guests....mostly because it will be in an odd setting. But the finale...the perfect chorus...Thanks for the mini mind vacation!

Excellent hunt and great use of the Tesoro! I have a Cortez that I have used a few times but hard to get used to! I think the buckle may be more of a strap buckle than shoe buckle. The funky piece in the one and may have been attached to something like a bag or strap. Just a guess but I believe I have seen some like it before.

I got one of those few years back after leaving the hospital with a 16" chest incision and a few man made cow tissue and Dacron hose parts in me. The TC is so light in weight it was the only thing I could use for more than 5 mins. I'd walk for 20 mins to get to the park 3 blocks away, I know , I know, 20 mins = 3 city blocks, recovery was slow . I actually was asked by a Park Ranger the first time out why I was in a hospital gown bare assed in the back metal detecting this park in the middle of the day? I didn't have an answer that made any sense so he drove me home..later I found out it was the pain meds, wonking my brain, LOL.
Anyways I found more jewelry with that TC than any other MD I ever owned in the trashed areas everyone with a MD avoids. I still have it and still use it as my trashy park picker. I have an Nox800, a few minelabs and MXTpro but I can swing the TC all day and have more than enough energy left to do a few 12oz curls and chase the gurls.

      MetalDetecting242 weeks ago (edited)Dear subscribers,
This is an update on my health progress (I'm sorry for the delay).
First of all I would like to thank you for all the wishes and your support! It means a lot to me.
It has been a very difficult week since the accident (which took place on 4th July - the video can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/3-4lXpo1cV8/w-d-xo.html).
I'm still recovering... The accident itself wasn't actually as bad, as the "medical treatment" afterwards.
The incompetent doctor who "removed" the wire in the hospital did a terrible job. He twisted it with force in all directions, without any knowledge about the size or shape of the object underneath the skin (no X-Rays were taken before). I went to a hospital to prevent this from happening. If only I knew, I would finish it myself in the creek (probably much better).
After this procedure he took an X-Ray (I believe, I had to ask for it) and realized, that a small piece of the wire is still in my leg. He showed the picture to me, rinsed the wound, took a tiny rust particle out, presented it to me and claimed that the object has been removed. He then stitched the wound and send me home.
I had instant doubts, because the size of the object wasn't matching the part I saw on the X-Ray (but who am I to tell him this...). I thought, maybe he rinsed it out without seeing it...
I scanned my leg with two metal detectors at home, but this method was not reliable (both produced (non ferrous) signals, not only on my right, but also the left leg and even my head... hmm...).
After a second visit in the same hospital two days later, another doctor saw the wound. She didn't like it, decided to take out the stitches and let it open.
She kneaded my leg (to squeeze something out of it, which didn't happen) and send me home with a new bandage...
After this treatment the pain came back. I was lying in bed for the whole week and had up to 102°F (39°C) fever for three days.
A visit to a doctor (in a different facility) last Tuesday ended only with minor "kneading" and a new bandage. As soon as the doctor heard about the fever, she wanted to send me to a hospital, but I was somehow able to change her mind.
The latest visit yesterday revealed the cause of the problem. I asked for an X-Ray to be 100% sure.
      The picture showed the worst...
The same rusty bit of wire already seen on the previous X-Ray is still in my leg! The doctor from the hospital hasn't removed it and stitched the wound.
The current advice from the recent doctor is to let the iron in my leg. She said, a surgery would be too risky and complicated. The (small) object is located too close to the bone and the nerve.
I have to continue taking antibiotics and wait for the next visit (until Monday), with hope that the leg doesn't get worse...
I knew that a visit in the hospital will be a risky move, but it exceeded my worst expectations...
I wish, I could bring you good news, but it is how it is... Maybe next week.
      Thanks for reading,
have a great day or evening.Read more Show less Comment 177 178 There was an up date...leg doing better.
