Putrescent Knight that low in general is a crime, I love his moveset and jumoing his blue fire. Absolutely bonkers that someone could dislike such a fantastic boss

    • @HMCarsSOA
      @HMCarsSOA 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Agreed, this might be a little bit of a long comment to add to the discussion, the Hippo is one of the worst fights in the game in my opinion and reminds me of the worst aspects of DS2's beast bosses (no hate, i still like DS2) and jank mixed with Elden Ring's aggression. It's not just a reminder of fromsoft's inability to consistently make amazing beast bosses like Midir and Ludwig (Placidusax is still great and i haven't faced Bayle yet), it's them showing us they still have the capability of making something truly horrendous and as terrible as Royal Rat Authority and Centipede Demon.
The Putrescent Knight on the other hand is a great fight in my opinion, all of its moves feel intuitive to dodge and jump, it's artistically brilliant with its haunting and subtly intense track, it's by no means on the level of something like Messmer, but i'd take it over the janky grabbing Hippo anyday! One last time, f*ck the hippo and its janky grab, one of the worst bosses i've ever faced.

Scadutree Avatar's phase 3 explosion is actually one of the best moves on this dlc imo. Its a short sized aoe explosion with lasers that shoot half a second after the aoe, so you just have to space out from the aoe and dodge the lasers a bit after. Its one of my favourite moves because it mixes two tipes of attacks together in a fun and rewarding way by making the avatar tired after using it. Hope you can appreciate it when u fight it again in the future!

My favorite boss from the dlc has to be Rellana. Imo, she's the best "agility" fight in Elden Ring. She's basically what I wanted Malenia to be without the blatant bullshit. Bonus points that she's a spellblade boss. The mixture of weapon and magic attacks makes for really fun combos to dodge. Plus, I loved Loretta's aesthetics from the base game and Rellana's are even better.

Bruh really looked at the DLC bosses and went 'that's not it chief. Nah but seriously, it's always fascinating seeing how people rate the bosses of Elden Ring, which are so uniquelyt designed. I especially love how we've all collectively agreed that the Godskin Duo sucks...cos, well it sucks
Anyway here's my take on the list for the placements I have opinions on:
Regal Ancestral Spirit-Criminally low and very much underrated. While I agree it's easy, the moveset is pretty engaging imo and the atmosphere is unparalleled, although it's impact is lessened by this being a repeat boss that takes longer
Putrescent Knight-Deserves to be higher imo, the music and vibe of the fight feels like sinking into slumber and the moveset is just really well put together, combining delays and long combos in a way that keeps the fight dynamic. The continuous charging move is ridiculously fun to dodge imo
Lichdragon Fortisaxx-On one hand I want to put it higher, on the other hand I can't really justify it beyond 'Holy shiz this fight is awesome, this theme is fire, I'm fighting a dragon! I think currently I'd put it above Placidusax, for reasons I'll state later. But yeah, while I don't find the fight stupidly easy his health is not high enough at all. On a side note I have never gotten hit by the giant spin move, like to me it's so unthreatening but man does it make me fele like a badass to dodge it!
Fire Giant-I don't like it, it's a fight that feels long and dragged out for a boss who flails about or spams fire. I remembering dying a stupid amounts to it my first time through only to one shot it on my most recent playthrough. Feels pretty inconsistent and not an engaging mechanical experience, but the scale and atmosphere plus that 2nd phase cutscene give it some positive attributes
Dancing Lion-I feel I need more time with this one, he's in a weird place being the games intended first boss because depending on so many factors he could be too hard or too easy. His moveset is certainly interesting but can have frustrating aspects and it can sometimes be hard to tell what's going on in the second phase. Spectacle-wise I adore them, the music is outstanding and I love how he's on a timer that determines his element switch which is a fun gimmick. I'd probably leave him in the middle for now
Margit-I feel like I enjoy the Margit fight way more than the average person, he's just so well put together, a near insurmountable challenge for newbies (like I was) that becomes a much easier but still very much engaging challenge on repeat playthroughs when you understand his mechanics. I love how he's a teacher for how bosses will work mechanically via his response to you healing, his delays and quick swipes, it communicates this isn't Dark Souls any more, just rolling means you're gonna have a really difficult time
Malenia-One of my favourite bosses, I am very much a Malenia simp. Minus the attack that should not be named, her moveset and healing mechanic forces you to be proactive and aggressive and it's expansion into the second phase is amazing. A visual and mechanic spectacle. And I gotta say I defo agree waterfowl should be something she does with some kind of condition such as health, feels so unfair she can just pull it out whenever
Placidusax-Defo the boss that has fallen out of favour for me, I remember this was my favourite dragon boss in the Fromsoft catalogue for a while but during my recent playthrough I found it a lot more frustrating. I adore the spectacle here, stumbling onto this dragon king stuck out of time, lighting striking around you and his teleporting gimmick is surprising and a nice change of pace. But it also adds a problem for me, that being he rarely gives you time hit him, a lot of attacks force you out of his range and in phase two he just keeps running away, it makes the fight turn into chasing him and not fighting him. I still love this fight but he needs a period where he isn't as mobile so you can actually get some good damage in on him. Maybe I just had really bad RNG tho
Consort Radahn- Oh boi this one's quite controversial, but I think this placement is about the same as mine. Not the best but far from awful. But I would place him below Malenia, because while she has an attack that feel widely ridiculous, the second phase is a lot of 'um...what just happened?!' Imo the problem isn't mechanics but clarity, if you manage to anticipate second phase attacks and dodge them it's fun but it's often difficult to tell how his attacks work, where their coming from or what hit you. It feels like a lot of stuff happens and you may or may not get hit. Like there are tells but you can't tell what they lead to in the fight blind and the execution they require is stupidly high. When players who solo bosses are struggling severely with summons and Spirit Ahses maybe tone it down just a little. But I am nit-picking, once you get into the rhythm of this fight it's a lot of fun and the story significance, spectacle and soundtrack uplift it as an unforgettable experience. but I hesitate to say I want to learn how to fight this guy solo
Radahn- My hot take is I don't like this fight mechanically as much as most do. Spectacle-wise it's unmatched, taking down a demigod with fellow champions whose imposing size and gravity magic use makes it feel like a clash of the ages. But idk, I find his moveset so unintuitive, a lot of things just don't click for me and the runback feels tedious with him shooting arrows at you requiring constant focus. Plus there's how the patches nuked my boi into the ground, to the extent that if you summon, they can pretty much solo him as you run around not engaging him. It's a really unfortunate nerf.

Hey, what criteria is being used to choose what constitute a boss in this list? because i'm pretty sure that the top 10 would be, i no particular order: Messmer, Rellana, Midra, Maliketh, Mohg, Morgott, Godfrey, Rykard,Curse youuuuu BAAAAYYYYYYLE, Radagon & Elden Beast; which are remembrance bosses except for Bayle who has a unique mechanic. But Godskin duo, Hippo, Leda and Margit don't drop remembrances, so where are the likes of Red Wolf, Loretta and Magma Wyrms(who are all counted as "Great enemies" and have achievements)?
Good video either way but i'm confused.
For the purposes of simplicity i am assuming that both Mohg fights, both godfrey fights, and loretta fights are all counted as one because in each case the least powerful version is phase 1 of the later version. And that the separate godskins are not counted in a similar manner due to the existence of the duo fight.
Ppd. let's not forget Sir Gideon Ofnir, the AAAALLLLL KNOWING

  • @jeff3221
    @jeff3221 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

For me, I'd put Promised Consort Radahn at the bottom of the list. I've beaten him without summons, solo, and buddy, let me tell you, that was not by choice.
The NPC summons inflate the boss's HP massively disproportionately compared to their impact.
The spirit ashes I tried just melted in phase 2.
So, I ended up just doing it solo and guess what? I felt nothing when I won. No rage, no joy, no relief, just, "Phew, check that off the list."
I spent 5 hours fighting him and it was not worth it.
I'd fight Godskin Duo over him any day. If I find Godskin Duo too hard, I can just throw a couple sleeping pots and boom, no more Duo.
If I'm having trouble with Radahn I need to either respec my character, or summon someone else to win for me.
You can't use Mohg's Shackle to get in extra damage. Why? What's the point in using Mohg's corpse if it has zero relevance beyond one NPC?
This isn't even mentioning how amateurish the design of the fight is.
The arena isn't flat, it's got gouges in it and that cocks up timings across the board. If you ever felt like you should have dodged something, check your feet, it was most likely that you or Radahn were on a slope.
Idk, it just boggles the mind how the same expansion that gave us Messmer, finished with Radahn.

One thing I wanted to moment on regarding the Radahn vs Malenia discourse as the uncontested 2 most difficult Elden Soulsbourne bosses is that Malenia is entirely optional and doesn't impact the in game progression whereas Radahn gatekeeps the DLC ending.
My main issue with Radahn is how he bastardises elden ring build diversity as certain builds against him simply do not feel viable. Also, the Holy AOE followups are super inconsistent on their hitboxes and his ability to one shot you after being charmed twice is a bit crazy.

The only boss in the dlc I would actually refight voluntarily is Midras, cause the fight was actually enjoyable.

It's really nice seeing someone go over and talk about the bosses without just calling anything that's hard unfair. I think Gaius and Radahn specifically see a LOT of this right now. I've beat both of them a few times now and I think that radahn has potential to be top 5 in the game with a few tweaks, namely his triple slash that's borderline impossible to dodge fully and just toning down some of the particle effects. I never actually had much issue with visibility from the holy AoE, but rather Miquellas hair. I found that in the process of dodging the holy AoE attacks I would be in a position where they wouldn't get in front of my camera. Anyways kind of a long ramble but I'm curious what things you'd tweak about the fight

My main problem with base game Radahn and why I hesitate putting him above DLC Radahn is that he is too easy if you use the summons in the arena. The base game Radahn fight was built up as this ultra powerful raid boss that you’ll need an entire army of people to take on (which would be wholly unique for a Souls game) but when you actually treat him like a raid boss he folds way too easily. Malenia without waterfowl dance would make her just like any other boss encounter. But now she is Malenia. That move is what makes her stand out. Dodging it perfectly still feels great after so many times, so to me its well worth the pain to learn it in the first place.

Malenia feels very much like Gherman or Maria from Bloodborne, the fight is way more intimate and more like a graceful dance than an AOE, epilepsy inducing shit show. I think I’ve fought her so often I know her moves off by heart but I still adore her fight, phase one is perfection and while phase 2 can get hairy I never feel overwhelmed like I do in most other Elden Ring Fights. Waterfowl I feel teaches players caution, I think players who know this fight will sense when they’re due a waterfowl and act accordingly. It can be dodged with not too much hassle especially the 2nd and 3rd flurries, 1st is tricky, but it’s why I use a shield.

since waterfowl has a long and clear telegraph and can be dodged at any distance even with medium roll, the best strategy for Malenia is actually to play extremely expressive and go to stagger town on her with heavier weapons imo. Waterfowl is still a poorly designed attack though even though I find it fun to dodge, purely due to how unintuitive it is, though at least it's not as bad as the Consort criss cross slash - that attack is one of the worst designed in the series, just as unintuitive to dodge (and unlike waterfowl, extremely difficult to get consistent at) but a lot less fun to pull off too.

Malenia is still my personal favourite Elden Ring boss. I get the discourse over Waterfowl, but I never had an issue with it. (Likely because I was light rolling for most of my first playthrough). Even if I didn't dodge it perfectly, I made it out alive.
I also disagree that Malenia should only do WFD at 50% health. Having it be that predictable makes it incredibly easy to make it a nothing burger, which I understand is what a lot of people might want, but it would ruin the fight for me. Especially now, with the new DLC weapons, there are new things I can do to avoid WFD while dealing damage (swift slash s the second flurry while hitting her, and it's super cool).
Overall, I think she's a fantastic fight, but Messmer is a very, very, very close second.

Malenia > Consort Radahn. Malenia mostly comes down to whether or not you can react to waterfowl dance and manage to get more hits in than being hit because of her lifesteal, but she she is weak to status effects, can get staggered and poise broken rather easily, and gives you some time to breathe in general. Phase 2 is more flashy with some new and challenging attacks, and the threat of scarlet rot, but managable overall and is clear enough to read. Radahn phase 1 is already attacking relentlessly but it's not too bad apart from 1 or 2 moves other than the damage output he has. But then phase 2 adds a lot of extra holy damage spam that sometimes blocks your entire view, Miquella's hair blocks you from seeing what Radahn is doing, the grab attack has a DS2-level hitbox and those teleportation and meteor attacks are just so hard to avoid consistently. He also seems to lose any notable weaknesses to status or damage types. Having him transition at his last third of the health pool would have made for a less frustrating but still challenging fight. Or slow down his attacking if you're already spamming the screen with columns of light.
Kinda hot take: The DS3 Twin Princes fight handled this whole "theme" better IMO, where the holy magic brother swoops in to heal and help the one slowly succumbing to the battle with the hero. Hell, the whole imagery is the exact same basically with Miquella climbing on Radahn's back. Twin Princes added a couple more projectiles to avoid, the healing once you knock down the fighting brother to a certain amount of health and the objective of killing the second prince, which would have made even more sense here. After all, you're tasked with killing Miquella, not his consort, and all you do is hitting his consort. I see for reasons of lore Miquella probably can't survive without a consort and because of staying in good taste you don't want to force the player to beat the hell out of a god that looks like a frail teenager though. Still could have built the whole thing around some sort of essential gimmick item that lets you put Miquella to eternal sleep or whatever.
Also, Fortissax shouldn't be higher than the likes of Scadutree Avatar or Putrescent Knight just for the camera/lock-on alone (which is crap in all of those ancient dragon fights anyway). The body lock-on hardly makes sense for any type of play, head lock-on only makes sense for ranged or spell players. The standard drakes are much better in that regard, as they have their heads down where you can hit them every now and then, plus you can focus on the legs too and they make it easier to see what they are going to do.

Recently I have done a lot of Cooperating and as fate would have it, most places where you get summoned to are either Godfreys Arena, Radagons, Farum Azula, somewhere in the DLC or, who would have guessed: Malenias place
After battling her so many times I would argue that I might have gotten somewhat proficient at avoiding her shit, but I can hardly agree on the sentiment that there is anything rewarding or fun about it
The Waterfowl Dance is still a guaranteed Gameover 8 out of 9 times for either me or my host, with a bit of luck I have enough space behind me to run far enough to escape her hitbox and roll dodge on the second half, but sometimes you have your back in a corner, she jumps up and goodbye goes the Run
and the healing per swing... is just dumb, there is nothing intuitive or difficult about it it´s just "Ha, didn´t play flawlessly, see that damage you dealt to me? How about I nullify it all in a flash while gravely injuring you - lol!"
it´s unecessary punishment in a fight that is already challenging enough without this particular caveat and while the staggering is a welcome addition, you are still often just left to do a hit and run, hit and run and pray she does not spontaneously go on hyperarmor and smack you healing the damage you just dealt
I know there are some people who just cannot handle this type of complaint but to those people I say: Piss off, go wallow in your Tryhardiness - but for people like me and I imagine a good chunk of other players who got through the rest of the game just fine Malenia is and always will be simply a tiring ordeal that just wears you out

When I fought her, one of her waterfowl attacks I completed dodged somehow. Like 4 straight well timed rolls and avoided every single attack in her combo. Maybe I was in a flow state, but it showed me IT CAN be dodged. The timing is just very very particular. And I dodged into her each time so it's not as if i was running away.

I’d put Malenia lower than you do. I really wish she either didn’t have heal on hit or didn’t have waterfowl. Lose one of those (or at least change her heal so she only healed when she damaged you instead of healing when you block) and she would probably be top ten.

My main problem with most of the bosses are the repeats, a repeated boss makes the initial encounter 10 times worse and less special for me personally, that’s why most of the DLC is near the top for me personally

I don't like reused fights either when they don't make sense but this is really dumb, if you're referring to Dancing Lion that's even dumber cause they never mention about there only being one and the 2nd is found in a logical place too, really no issue (apart from the refight itself giving you AIDS).

Like others have said, dont understand the hate for Putrescent Knight. But i ALSO cannot for the life of me understand the love for Messmer. His second phase just has too much crap on the screen which makes it extremely hard to follow. Hes like Malenia on steroids and acid.

I often see people comparing godskin duo to Ornstein and Smough from DS1 as though O&S is a really good and well designed bossfight. Am I the only one who finds both bosses equally dogshit? Tbh the only duo fight I ever liked in the entire series was demon princes. I just don't care for duo fights as a whole

One area of disappointment I had with the dlc was they didn't make a good multi enemy bosses. The dlcs for souls, especially Ds3 had the best duo bosses(demon prince, sister friede). It's like they didn't even want to try after the garbage duo/trio fights in the base game.
I would've rather had a good duo boss than something like a rider boss that runs away constantly.. Gaius.

The thing is that there’s not a single good duo/gank fight in Elden Ring. DS1 has Gargoyles and O&S, DS2 had the Throne Watcher and Defender, DS3 had Deacons of the Deep, Bloodborne had the Shadows of Yarnham, Demon’s Souls had Maneaters. Not all of these bosses are excellent, but they are all enjoyable in their own right. Name one duo/gank boss in Elden Ring’s base game that you enjoyed.
