  • A short film by Andreas Trauttmansdorff about the pleasures of driving an early Porsche 911. See more of my work at atpix.ca Thank you to everyone for the great comments. So many of them really crack me up. It's so gratifying to be able to actually touch so many people and be able to share some joy.

@@alex-v5j3w Lol early 911s were built like a horse and cart. Consistently terrible build quality, and a 10th as reliable as a miata. Anyway, you're clearly not a car enthusiast if you're ragging on other people's interests. Gatekeeping the car community probably means you don't even have a fucking license yet. Embarrassed and disappointed if you're over 15.

about 30+ years ago, my buddy and me stole his dads 911 silver targa. his dad recorded the mileage so we had to do EXACTLLY either 100 or 200 miles and hope and pray that Pete could convince his dad that he'd written down the mileage wrong. at 18 years old...man... it was AWESOME to drive. took some getting used to cause older 911's had a habit of a loose back end. we crop toured, did some high end highway driving...wow what a memory. and yes, his dad never caught on....

Reminds me when I was in high school, I was shooting photographs for the yearbook, along with two guys both named Chris. We were shooting a pageant, and one of the Chris's asked me, "Are you shooting TTL?" Heck no, my camera was old-school, totally manual. At the end of the pageant, a pair of models came out dressed as a bride and groom. I saw that girl dressed up like a meringue and knew that my flash was going to try to make that dress 18% grey, so I opened my lens aperture a stop and a half. The Chris's with their fancy TTL flash programs shot it too, but I was the only one who could get a usable negative. There's something to be said for knowing how a machine works, and being able to drive it.

As an almost 32 year old, I appreciate having had the opportunity to learn to drive, and to have my first car be a simple machine. It's fanciest features were motorized sidemirrors, power steering and a Bosch automatic fuel injection. The rest? A 1998 Skoda Felicia 1.3.
I drove that car so much in the 6 years I had it. I learned how to install aftermarket stereo on that car. I learned about mileage. I learned about clutches and why you don't play around with randomly dumping it. I learned why taking off in 3rd or 5th was a bad idea, although yeah, bad ideas, this car took it like a champ. And even when it's clutch gave in after two years of abuse, it still only cost about a third to a quarter of what my dad had to pay to replace the clutch on his 1998 Honda CRV before he sold it.
This Skoda taught me so much about driving, and I like to believe it enabled me to become a good driver. With it's adequate top speed of 140kph (87mph), I was able to get going, just not ridiculously dangerously fast. I even got stopped by the police once at that speed where the speed limit was 90kph (55mph). He asked me about the car and responded with "I didn't think this would even get that fast. Please slow down!".
It's been 11 years since I sold my dear old Skoda. Today I daily a 2012 VW Polo with a 1.2L 3cyl diesel engine. But I keep a 1998 Toyota Corolla liftback with a 1.3l petrol engine to drive on certain days because it's just so much different. Old cars just feel different. They drive different. You get a feel for the road most people don't like to feel. Every bump. Every piece of gravel. You know what your car is going through, and as a good driver, you acknowledge those things and drive appropriately. With these modern senseless machines, we drive them like brutes. We don't feel. We don't care. They don't give feedback unless you get into an accident.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Just sitting in older cars is like nothing else today and it just puts into perspective how spoiled rotten I am. There's no power steering, the ride is harsh. Push the breaks too hard and they lock, use the breaks too much and they overheat. It doesn't like being sat in traffic too long and hasn't got much power. It's only got 4 gears and the the only AC is the windows but my god is it the most fun I've ever had in a car. I used DSLRs. I used suction cups that are used for carrying glass. They worked but once I was done I'd realized I should have just spent the money on some proper camera mounts. They 'd have been a little more expensive but way more functional. My rig was a pain in the butt. Also, be prepared for some scuffing of the paint when you use the suction cups. It was my car so I wasn't too worried. Don't know if I'd have done it with someone else's car. Good luck.
