I have only seen this clip (so far). It looked like Viola Davis was making "Florida" her own character, not just doing an imitation of Esther Rolle (who I love).
I swear John Amos reminds me of my dad. I do miss the hell out of my pops. If not for stage 4 liver cancer my father would still be here! Miss you pops.

You’re not kidding! As a 50 year old white man, John Amos reminded me of my dad even back when I was just a kid watching it. Firm, no foolishness but fair. People are more similar than mass media, etc. give us credit for. I’ve always thought John Amos was great. My wife recorded this for me as I didn’t have the chance to see it when it aired but when he walked in as Fred C. Davis...no lie, a tear or two of nostalgia ran down my face 😄

This is top of the line Hollywood and they had the resources to tweek it till they got it right; clearly they didn't! This was horrible! The only good thing about it was seeing John Amos! I screamed when I saw him. I don't thing Andre Braugher knew that John would be there by the look on his face. 😎
John Amos is a legend. his role as Fitzwallace in West Wing is one for the ages, he ins't there much but when he appears, man, he brings all the gravitas of this world

The late Andre Braugher played James Evans in the live broadcast.....btw he too was a icon in his own right as an actor. I grew up watching good times and while Mister Amos is a legend Andre did not do a bad job.
Just my opinion. First off. The ladies were fine. They acted it out very well. I thought the ham and worst of it was JJ. Then Michael and James. Now, with John Amos. First off it is Live TV and He is 80 years old. Give him a Break! He did well despite a line or two missing. Plus, IMO Good Times was a good show but it took a major hit in quality after Amos left the show. Bottom line, it was nice to watch an old hit.

The only one not on set/in audience was "Michael". Although I enjoyed seeing John Amos, Bernadette Stanis, Jimmy Walker and "Wilona" (forgot her real name) for only the moment (you’re right. ‘Thelma’ didn’t seem to age much at all), I did not enjoy the Good Times segment either. Great actors/comedians separately but as these iconic characters, it just didn't translate as well as the All in the Family or earlier Jeffersons segments did.
Thelma just didn't "gel" with JJ or any of the other characters. The actress isn't a bad actress this just wasn't a good role for her. JJ seemed to be just a caricature of the original.
The fact that James never got a send-off on the original show that had us in tears when Florida read that telegram, it's great that john got a return on the set 40 plus years later rip john Amos you we're a father to the fatherless

And considering I also didn't have my father in my life..after about 7, I honestly didn't see much wrong with the show. Like, I preferred the fathr be there. It was better in that sense..the same sense that it would be better if MY father was there. But I still enjoyed the show. Now that I know why he wasn't there, I understand how it took a certain path. BUT..it wasn't even much different than real life missing father'ed homes. Dear Hollywood Please don’t fk with anymore black shows unless you have everything trunk tight! This was a terrible showing! Good times is my favorite show! Everything thing seemed rushed! And the actors choose had no passion for the script! The casting director should be fired! Meanwhile the set director should get a raise!
The emotion Andre Braugher had when he open that door was about as real as it gets. It's a tribute to an actor's skill when you have a moment like that and you can still hold it together somehow.
That was a symbolic moment, and it only took 40 ish years!! Thank you for posting…(fyi, James Evans is dead, he was playing a different character.) But telling him he was not welcome and then having a change of heart was one of the best lifting of the fourth wall moments I’ve seen in a very long time!!
So happy to see John Amos , super excited. The set looks amazing kudos to the set decorator for doing such a great job recreating the set. The casting could have been better, none of the actors resemble the original cast except Viola Davis. She looks like she could be part of Ester Rolles family. I wished I lived in LA to attend a live taping.
Good Times had some great episodes, but this really wasn't one. I'd have gone maybe with Black Jesus or the one with the blind con man encyclopedia salesman or the one where James's army buddy who's now a successful televangelist comes to town.
The problem I have with Woody Harrelson as Archie Bunker is that while Caroll O'Connor's Archie was somebody who would get blustery and aggravated you knew that he was phtsically harmless. It's too easy to imagine Woody Harrelson losing it and punching Edith or Mike.
He definitely deserve all his flowers he will always be a icon actor

The emotion Andre Braugher had when he open that door was about as real as it gets. It's a tribute to an actor's skill when you have a moment like that and you can still hold it together somehow.

That was a symbolic moment, and it only took 40 ish years!! Thank you for posting…(fyi, James Evans is dead, he was playing a different character.) But telling him he was not welcome and then having a change of heart was one of the best lifting of the fourth wall moments I’ve seen in a very long time!!
So happy to see John Amos , super excited. The set looks amazing kudos to the set decorator for doing such a great job recreating the set. The casting could have been better, none of the actors resemble the original cast except Viola Davis. She looks like she could be part of Ester Rolles family. I wished I lived in LA to attend a live taping.

Good Times had some great episodes, but this really wasn't one. I'd have gone maybe with Black Jesus or the one with the blind con man encyclopedia salesman or the one where James's army buddy who's now a successful televangelist comes to town.
The problem I have with Woody Harrelson as Archie Bunker is that while Caroll O'Connor's Archie was somebody who would get blustery and aggravated you knew that he was phtsically harmless. It's too easy to imagine Woody Harrelson losing it and punching Edith or Mike.
