It happened a lot in the 70s, 80s, and 90s that TV shows lost their original focus because of "breakout characters" and "catch phrases". Good Times, Happy Days, Family Matters, just to name a few. I always admired John Amos' integrity. Thankfully, he was cast in the groundbreaking Roots soon after.

Now, with John Amos. First off it is Live TV and He is 80 years old. Give him a Break! He did well despite a line or two missing. Plus, IMO Good Times was a good show but it took a major hit in quality after Amos left the show.

Help me out here: Its it just me or did it seem like John Amos forgot some of his lines. Also when Jimmy Kimmel introduced some of the original cast members from Good Times, Bernadette Stans closed the door on Jimmie Walker. Plus Jimmie Walker was not there with everyone at the end of the show. Am I reading too much into it?

James: How come that girl ain't bring her bf over to meet the family.
      JJ: Yea. How come!!!!
James: How come she leaving the house all the time.
      JJ: Yeeeeeeeea. HOW COOOOOME!
James: You got one mo time to say "How come" and you gon wonder how come you ain't in the same room wif yo teeth.

Although I enjoyed seeing John Amos, Bernadette Stanis, Jimmy Walker and "Wilona" (forgot her real name) for only the moment (you’re right. ‘Thelma’ didn’t seem to age much at all), I did not enjoy the Good Times segment either. Great actors/comedians separately but as these iconic characters, it just didn't translate as well as the All in the Family or earlier Jeffersons segments did.

lol. None of us knew that until years later. That show was great. I personally saw ONLY the change of a real man not being there. And considering I also didn't have my father in my life..after about 7, I honestly didn't see much wrong with the show.
Like, I preferred the fathr be there. It was better in that sense..the same sense that it would be better if MY father was there. But I still enjoyed the show.
Now that I know why he wasn't there, I understand how it took a certain path. BUT..it wasn't even much different than real life missing father'ed homes.
Older kid who had to grow up in the rough world, without a father..still tyring to be a kid, while simultaneously trying to be a man. Taking on the world and not even knowing how. That was me.
And SEEING how stupid he was, I made sure I DIDN'T become that stupid. lol
