- An SUV in a parking lot in Van Nuys suddenly exploded and flew into pieces after a man inside lit up a cigarette while there were propane canisters in the vehicle Thursday night.
“Virtually exploding..”?
Friend, it LITERALLY exploded.
basically.
This is what happens when you hire people based on superficial qualities like appearance and voice. They are inversely correlated with intelligence. You don't have to develop smarts if your needs are already met without doing anything.
She got that job because of her hispanic last name .
Good grief! The vehicle exploded...period!!
Somehow these two words are exchanging meanings: 'My head literally exploded'
The cause of the fire under investigation? What? He had propane tanks in his car then he lit a cigarette, Ka-Boom!!
seriously!! he was living in the car with propane tanks !! quite obvious what happened !!
I was confused as well
"We need to spend some more taxpayer money for some overtime" fixed it.
Totally. This is isn't going to require Columbo or Sherlock Holmes.
We're doomed, common sense is gone.
A piece of the car in a tree and she's standing directly below it
Right that's what I was thinking.
Looks like the headliner to me. Very light weight or else that flimsy tree wouldn't be supporting it at the top. Duh!
@danocamaross ya looking at it closer I think you are right. Lol
Its a soft low weight liner
I thought the same thing.
SUV flies into pieces? It's called an explosion. My 1982 high school diploma is more valuable than a modern day college education.

Rest easy. They will "investigate" what happened. Someone might earn a Nobel prize in the process.

No fire at all, just a quick release of energy. All that twisted metal, surprised this guy is alive. People heard this explosion 3 miles away.
If people heard this explosion three miles away, they probably felt the impact of the explosion by broken windows as well. I'm not only surprised this guy survived but I would guess he suffered hearing loss. A blast that loud would certainly destroy one's hearing. This guy is very, very lucky to be alive.
He’s alive but he won’t be hearing much for awhile.
He is lucky the tanks were most likely in the back seat and he was in the front from the video of the car.
The tree was wearing his balls like earrings 🎉
My goodness, I'm glad he survived! It would be interesting as to why the car exploded. He had to have some gasoline fumes from a firewall leak under the hood, into the passenger compartment or had a propane tank which was in the car passenger area but had a slow leak. But one normally can detect gasoline fumes, but not propane, certainly not unscented methane.
It's not a sedan. Cause of the fire under investigation? 😂
It's the FN propane.

While I am not saying it is smart to stand under the debris, I am pretty sure that is the noise insulation that goes under neath the headliner panel, I just took apart my 4runner interior to noise insulate it better and that looks exactly like the insulation under the headliner, so it wouldn't hurt her if it came off the tree

How in the world did he survive all those projectiles from that explosion. That is amazing. Just minor injuries, too? Amazing!
Previously, he was bitten by a radioactive idiot.
His seat protected him. The explosion happened in the back of the car.
He was in on the job….
All the pieces were flying away from where the explosion originated.
Being more or less centered in the blast, he experienced a pressure pulse all around him, minimizing any pressure differentials across his body.
Pieces tend to fly away from the center of an explosion, not towards it.
Maybe he was a projectile too.

What kind of person who can swing a $40,000 SUV lives in it ?
It was a propane cylinder explosion & he must have NO sense of smell because enough gas % to blow that thing SKY HIGH would have been smellable 5 parking spots away.
Is it just me or do these TV "reporters" get stupider & less insightful with every passing year ?
Propane is heavier than air and collects in low spots.
I'm going to guess he was huffing the propane and decided to light a cigarette. It's a no-brainer.
The man himself is the no-brainer here.
First they have to rule out the possibility that the SUV was electric, right?
It was propane. He had some kind of propane tanks in the car and lit up a cigarette. One of the tanks was leaking or he was huffing. @@stilusfractus7930

For those of you confused as to what happened, It was Butane, he was making Hash oil, didn't have proper ventilation and a spark did the rest.
Didn’t think of that one 😂 but I doubt he was doing a butane extraction for hash oil lmao It’s more likely he was smoking meth and his lighter ran out of fuel. Didn’t open a window while recharging the lighter and couldn’t wait for a hit.
If he used the brand of butane shown in the video he’d be hella disappointed when he realized there are sulfur based chemical odorants in it that ended up in his BHO! 🤮 1:01
Maybe he was used yo the smell of gas in his car?

Crossed my mind as well - if he had just hooked up a heater ot stove, and it leaked he would smell it (and presumably, not light up). Dunno... suspicious.

My father used to
Own a gas station/repair shop. One day a customer was filling his car with gas when the pump backed up and sprayed gasoline on his business suit. Spectators could tell he was furious and after he paid for his gas he got back into his car. In his anger he wasn’t thinking straight and started to light a cigarette. My father spotted him from the office and got on the loudspeaker yelling “Don’t light that cigarette!”. The man blanched and slumped over just before he would have lit his lighter, the cigarette still hanging from his lips. He sat there in shock for a good 20 minutes before he composed himself and drove off. We never saw him again but I’ll bet that would be the last cigarette he would ever try to light again.
What they showed is butane, not propane. Butane isn't odorized the way propane is, (at least none I have ever used) so would be easier to miss.

IKR you have to try really hard to get a propane tank to explode like that. A lot more than just lighting a cigarette nearby.
So glad he is still alive and going to make it. I don't like propane tanks of any size. I know they are used in camp stoves, but they give me the willies.
In considering what kind of cooking stuff to have if this hurricane season cuts my electric off again, I am opting for my charcoal hibachi and a stack of canned heat. Both easy to use, and with self-starting charcoal, I don't even have to use lighter fluid. If I lived in a car, I would not be doing a whole lot of cooking. Most stores have so many things to make meals from without cooking anything, it's just not necessary. A cooler with ice will keep most things safe to eat. When our electric went off for six days I lived out of cans, and made salads out of canned meats, vegetables and fruits. I had nuts, crackers, juice, parmesan cheese, oil and vinegar, breads, and coffee. That last was the problem. I didn't have any way to heat water. So I made cold coffee with no milk. Ugh.
This year I'll be ready. I also bought a good sized fan that runs on batteries, and I have gotten a load of "Cold Cloths," originally marketed as Snap Rags. I wish block ice was still sold. It would make things much easier for large populations with no way to keep food safe.
Liquid fuel stoves are dollar of dollar less expensive to operate than propane.

Wow! Years ago, I went to a YouHaul to fill a 5 gallon propane tank for my grill. I had the tank in my hand and tried to go into their office. I thought they were being over cautious. But things like this make see the wisdom in their actions.
