My dads mom had one of those ! Untill 1987 then replaced it with a Maytag . Just listening to washer brings back many memeries My grandmas sounded just like that ! That washer was a beast & brute force cleaned a load no problem. The roll over was astonishing ! These old school washers will get your stuff Clean !
There is no wasting time, it gets right to work. Those cloths cycle form top to bottom several times...... FANTASTIC. iT ALSO FILLS AND DRAINS EXTREMELY FAST. That spin cycle is incredible. Less time in the dryer !

The motor on these were direct drive for spin. Hence the addition of the fan on the back of the motor for added cooling. As I understand it, the models with the Unimatic transmission were expensive to manufacture and a bear to service.
I hate to say it, but even top loaders from the 70's - 90's couldn't wash like this. Top loaders (or any washer) today besides a Speed Queen is a joke.

Holy crap! I've never seen a washing machine spin that fast. What kind of a motor does that? It didn't drain first then spin, went from wash to spin/drain then a super fast refill. Amazing! Two rinses? This is the Superman of washers.
This is a solid tub washer, it had to spin to get the water out. Frigidaire kept using this design until 1969. They had the fastest spin of any top load automatic clothes washer. close to 1,100 rpm on the normal setting, during the 1950s. The first GE automatic washer spun this fast too, but slowed the spin down on every model after.
I had the Frigidaire in the late 60s, the instructions were to divide the clothes into quarters so they wouldn't ball up in a twisted knot. I used it in my apartment, and it ran off of a110 volt two wire line. And every time the agitator moved, the lights flickered. In my folk's house, we had an easy spin dryer washer that spun very fast in a small drum next to the wash tub in one unit.

musicnerd 72 first the TR7 was $1050 then add tax and delivery. I must say humans washed clothes by swishing them around for centuries before agitators were created. I guess the clothing got cleaned somehow? Now add a one horse power motor to that and you have some pretty powerful water movement in that bucket. That’s how the clothes are cleaned. I own this machine and am given my honest opinion. I also had the agitator model prior to this and I find that this does a better job with less damage to the clothing, Plus more importantly the washer is smart and knows exactly how much water to put in there even if you forget a piece open the lid it adds a little water, has never gotten unbalanced where its predecessor has a few times. Just saying.
The capacity "wars" started shortly after this time, other manufacturers began to increasing load size (10, 12, 14, 18, & some to 20 lb loads!). This washer could only handle about 8 lbs. of clothes. Frigidaire tubs remained this size for about 8 yrs When they changed the agitator to the "Jet Action" design & 12 lb. capacity. In 1970 the last redesign were the 1-18 models with the "Jet Cone" agitators and perforated spin tubs.

This is the ONLY washing machine we ever had from 1955 ....!!! It would need an occasional repair, the lower rubber vane on the agitator, the timer assembly ..... But God it just ran and ran ..... My mother would wash rugs in it .... I mean it was a tank !!! We had it in our kitchen, and when the spin cycle kicked in , youd think this thing was going to the Moon ....I mean ..... I was afraid of it .... all the glasses and dishes in the cabinets would shake ...lol And as a kid ..... If you could manage to put your chin on it during the spin cycle it would tickle the hell out of the insides of your ears .....!!! 😂 Good Times ..... GREAT WASHING MACHINE !
My grandmother had a gas clothes dryer which had a sliding dial (like a radio tuner). It also had no pilot light but a electric ignition element. This was long before anyone else adapted such a design. I think it was either a Philco or something else.
With cost efficiencies today a machine like this could never be produced. A shame too. People either loved these Frigidaires or hated them because they were difficult to work on and they had a tendency to tie clothes into a knot. In 1958 Frigidaire printed instructions under the lid for proper loading and that reduced tangling. My aunt and grandparents had later versions from the 60s and 70s.
These washers were not easy to service to replace any parts, more expensive than the competition to build too. Clothes often came out tangled together if they were not loaded correctly.
Miele, anyone? They’re a bit pricey but last longer. The Europeans settled on front loaders four decades ago for their superior cleaning performance, durability, water and energy consumption and delicacy in handling clothes compared even to modern agitator top loaders.

Why dont they make these again for modern day machines? The agitation. Is amazing and its spot on to how all those preppers plunge their clothes to wash. My grandma washed hers outside over a fire in a cast iron large cauldron style. Shaved lye soap into it and her plunger was made of steel on a wooden handle. She pretreated using a washboard on spots. My mom said her clothes were the cleanest that way. I preferred her old wringer washer with 2 rinse tubs LOL ive never seen an agitator like this. Now I need in my life. Joys of having older parents...you learn the old ways!

NOW THAT’S ROLLOVER!!!!! I think this is a 1952-55 Frigidaire Unimatic. I’ve seen at least a dozen of these on “automaticwasher.org”. The clean ability is FANTASTIC. If I ever want to amass a washer collection, it will DEFINITELY include one of these. If my grandmothers and even my parents are still here, maybe they’ll tell me about these. There's a kelvalator which the cone washes by literally tilting slightly in a circle (doesn't spin) which somehow cause water splashes in the top load

This is either a 1950 or 51 model. In 1952 Frigidaire ditched the two separate rinses for one long overflow rinse.

Fisher & Paykel toploaders have spun at 1,010 RPM since the late 1990s. A design revision a few years ago upped the current models a bit to 1,100 RPM.

This is a 1950-1951 model WO-65 washer, Frigidaire introduced the overflow-rinse in 1952 with the model WO-65-2.

The rubber cap is not original. The 50-51 models had a silver metal cap.
