    FYI: New owner here. It was a surprise. I was doing some research on HCs and came across this video. I had not seen it as it was published four days after I purchased her.
    As for the blistering, she had extensive blistering below the waterline as well. I knew this when I purchased her. I realize now just how wet the boat was. She had not been hauled for almost ten years. The previous owners experienced leaking water tanks and a leaky water heater. The blisters below the waterline are the typical osmosis blisters. The blisters above the waterline are a different animal and only go as deep as the gel coat where the osmosis blisters went as deep as three layers if glass.
    The gel coat blisters are concentrated along the faux plank line details. It was explained to me they used a faring compound where the glass did not take the detail of the mould. The compound was the problem. I had her hauled and spent a good amount of money to catch up on the blisters. The hull was stripped down to the glass and each blister big and small was ground out reglassed and faired. Probably close to 1000 blisters. I'm sure I will have more blisters down the line but manageable now. They are not structural.

      Slamhead, thanks for sharing the update. Glad that you went through the extra effort to remedy the blister issue. My first boat also had 1,000s of blisters under the waterline. Spent 6 months on the hard grinding, draining, drying, filling, and fairing. Was a lot of effort but rewarding.

      Thank you for the update. I am currently looking for a HC 38. The Telstar is what I think I want. I would appreciate touching base to discuss your purchase and sharing any advice you may have for me.

    I knew a couple that owned a Hans 41 they hired most of the upkeep out and it cost tens of thousands of dollars. they re-powered her and had to dismantle the galley and cabin entrance to crane in and out the engine, a colossal task. these are breathtaking ships to behold but require infinite ability and suitcases full of money to properly keep up.

      It would nice to have that kind of money to maintain a classic boat like that. It takes a great deal of passion to dedicate the time and money.

    Blisters above the waterline are common on many Taiwanese boats that have done extensive sailing/long term sailing. It can happen on any boat that suffers from blisters below the waterline. The same resin was used above and if the boat is under way or at anchor a lot the gelcoat will be submerged at most times letting water to permeate the surface. We have seen it on may babas, pandas, masons, HCs . In all cases its from boats that have spent a lot of time sailing the tropics loaded down. We developed a major case of them after spending three years sailing central America and the Carib. Ours didnt start till the water was in the high 80s for over a year.

      I owned a Hans Christian 48T built by the Hansa yard in 1987. I owned her for 32 years. Of that 25 were in the Caribbean and Mexico. Never did we experience blisters above the waterline, and only 2 below. I believe the latter were water blisters in the bottom paint and were not before the barrier coat. Recently, I owned a Hans Christian 33T built by Hans in 1985. She spent most of her life in the PNW, and lately Southern California. She too was blister free. Hans used 5 different yards in Formosa, before moving to Thailand. The Hans yard boats are hands down the best. The rest are good, but the Hansa's boat are to another level.

    Now that's a boat, really nice size, looks in great shape both on deck and below, osmotic blistering above the water line should be an easy fix, Harwood Ives also designed the brilliant HC 33' with what has to be the very best interior design of any boat that size. I really like the Telstar keel, as you said that will definitely improve performance and pointing ability to weather. Just such classic cruising boats, also love a canoe stern.

      You are so right about the 33’, it’s enormous inside, you can actually have more storage on a 33 than a 38 or even the 41 👍🏻

    When i look at boats that are for sale on youtube. (particularly sailboats, as i am in the market),,,,,,,The seller never ever puts the price up for people to see. This is a completely wasted effort for the seller. I have just been to another brokers site and all i have found is two boats for sale and a million with "SOLD" splashed across the advert and they were all motorised speed type boats. For gods sake can you brokers get a grip, us that are in the market, particularly me !!!!!! am getting a bit pissed off with chasing fresh air. And if the boat is no longer on the market,,,,for gods sake get rid of the bloody vid or the advert, this too pisses me off.

    • @talesofgraybeard7964
      @talesofgraybeard7964  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello James. I am not a broker. I'm a sailboat enthusiast and do these videos for informational purposes only. On occasion, the boats I do tours on are also listed for sale by the owner or broker, in which case I'll put a link in the description to the seller.
      I want these tours to be "evergreen" so putting a price or sales info in the actual video would not make sense as prices can change and the sales status of the boat can also change.
      Hope you understand.
