*She has just SOLD!* This SAILBOAT is a STEAL! Well, at $6,000 it certainly feels like a steal. Canadian Ken and I were very apprehensive when we went to explore this 1968 Bristol 33 - she'd been on the hard for 8 years, under plastic shrink wrap, in a boatyard. She was designed by Halsey Chase Herreshoff, the grandson of the late, great Nathanael Herreshoff, and it is downright huge when compared to her little sister, the Bristol 32 (one of my all-time favorites, in terms of design). Only a foot and a half longer with her LOA, she is a full 4 feet longer on her LWL, and 3/4 of a foot wider at the beam. With her fin keel, spade rudder, and a comfort ratio over 30, she will be an excellent coastal cruiser for a single, couple, or small family.
Expecting the worst, we actually were met with the opposite. The previous owners had completed many, many upgrades over the years - and some substantial ones circa 2014. They then moved to Florida and donated the sailboat to the Maine Island Trail Association which, in turn, sold it to the current owner just before COVID-19 broke out. The current owner's dream of moving to Maine didn't come to fruition and the boat has sat in the boatyard since. BUT, in 2014 she was re-powered with a Beta Marine diesel, received new standing rigging, and many other upgrades. She has a main and a genoa and is ready to go. The engine has a 1,000 hours or less on it (our guess is this number is significantly less) and has been yard maintained over the years. So, for $6,000 you could be on your way on your very own sailboat. She definitely needs a good scrub and some bottom paint, but if everything checks out, this could be the deal of the century! Check it out.
As always, we have no financial interest in this sailboat.
Thanks for watching!

I’m ready , I’m in Bangor, I’ve got the money and I know what I’m doing, problem is I’m too old (86) and can’t do it anymore… but still got me all exited. As exited as I’ve been in a while. Thanks for showing it to me.
86! good for you!
You can do it. My friend Joe was out single handing his 30' boat today and he turned 90 last week. He still keeps the boat on a mooring in Southwest Harbor and rows out.
I'm 50 a USMC you point I'll do!! I'm ready to learn!
65, and I'm ready !!
I’m loving these boat tours! You really have taken up the torch from captain Q!
Glad you're enjoying them! They're a ton of fun to make - especially finding the boats...
Shout out to captain q
Bristol Girl here! What a steal! I wish I could buy it work on it, and go sailing. For now, I have ran aground and in the process of being a caregiver to my aging parents. Once I am free from my obligation, I will be looking for my future Bristol. Happy Sailing ⛵
Hello! Thanks for finding us! What is your wish list Bristol? And, your parents are lucky.
@@boatfools , Hi guys, I am not sure if I should go for a Bristol 41.1 (we had hull #43) or something bigger 45.1. Or start with a 33 or 35 to get back in the groove. I am thinking of taking all the certifications (classes) from ASA. So much has changed in the last 10 years since "my Dad" sold our lovely boat 😩. Thank you for the response.
Gosh, where do you start. Newer Beta, standing rigging, self tailing winches , great sailboat data numbers. All I can say is sweet. 6K you bleeping kidding me ! You guys found a beauty :)
And it sold in like a second. Someone got a smokin' deal!
I think that mystery compartment was the boat yoga studio, especially if that is the only access to the quadrant. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Ha! Right?!? I think there is access from aft port lazarette. Maybe the starboard one, too…
That's definitely some deal! I just wish that I wasn't so far away from you up there in Maine -- the six hour ride back and forth fixing her up would kill me, but the price really tempts me. Keep them coming ... I love these episodes!
I love the song, Southern Cross".. I usually bring an acoustic guitar when I go out on a boat and play this song....Couldn't be more appropriate...for your channel..
Agreed! Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Good project boat for a young person, or the yard wll make a killing on man hours. The only two issues I would have is the motor down low and carbon monoxide gas and the deck steped mask on an old deck. Great find for the right person. Great video.
Thanks for your comment. The low engine threw me too. Definitely would double up on the carbon monoxide detectors.
Love watching your channel. Many of your vids are in my sailing grounds.
Awesome! Appreciate this and thanks for watching! We have some pretty nice sailing grounds around here!
@boatfools I'm on Deer Isle, right across from Brooklin. So, I enjoy sailing on the Penobscot, Jericho, and Blue Hill Bays. All with a weekender (Quickstep 24) on the weekend. I always want to buy whatever you are showing. Lol. As long as you enjoy it, keep 'em coming. Your fans love watching them
Congrats to the new owner. Enjoy your sailings
My Canadian friend said he put an offer in on a Bristol 33 in Rockland and it was accepted, I'm curious if this is it?
It may have been! I don’t have the details…
Excellent find!
Thank you!
Small group of friends lending a hand and a jet washer on the decks and that would brush up nicely.
The one serious job is re doing the underside but if the weather was kind it could be done in a week.
That done she could be in the water for the rest to be sorted.
Theres smaller and cruder boats circumnavigating the globe.
100% agreed. The bottom is the toughest job. The rest is easy.
Boy what a bargain Some new anti foul bottom paint, thorough leak inspection tests of all lines, etc and she'll sail again ! Audio tip.. your left right pan for each your mics is a bit weird on headphones . Pan both mics a bit more to center.
Appreciate the tip! How do I pan more to center? Luddite here!!!
Sigh...I'm not quite ready just yet. Plus, I am very wary of spade rudders. Even a mild grounding can bend the shaft and/or break things.
Not something that happens very often...that rudder has been on there for quite some time. :)
@@boatfools But could this be swapped out for a different rudder type ?
Question I have Parkinson's disease but I have always wanted a sailboat. I have afew problems but can still manage to do things just not that fast, so would you say that I have missed the boat or is it still possible?
Anything is possible!
Wow! What a deal...............Like you said, "some good boat soap and a power washer..."
Beta Marine Diesel engine center mounted. That's great it's diesel but the noise level being right there in the cabin may be an issue. But wow, 6,000. Awesome.
It sold in a hot second, too... Thanks for watching!
Hey guys, I was just wondering how much do u think would be needed to transport a 28ft or 33ft boat to Europe, money wise?
It’s a really good question and we don’t know the answer. Might be worth contacting Safe Harbor Marinas. They could probably point you in the right direction.
@@boatfools Thanks for responding. I did some late night research and it turned out it would cost about 20.000usd so that `s as much as the boat plus more. Anyhow that`s way more than I am willing to spend for a boat I`d use for holidays on river lol. Keep up the great work guys.
The engine, stuffing box and under-cockpit access alone is worth the price of this boat....90% of any renovation job is access...and this boat was built by someone who thought about how it would be maintained....
Yep!
That is a nice boat and a total steal at that price.
Truly! BTW, boat's in, going sailing today. Can't wait!
Having taught sailing in early 2000s, would be able to consider assisting
I am on deer isle. I should buy this boat.
Someone just did! She went fast. We'll find more...
30 second patio cleaner will make it look like brand new !
Did it sell? We are looking boat a beauty
She did…Sorry! Let us know how we can help you!
That looks like a great winter project
Wow! Does this make your wheels start turning. $6k leaves so much room for all the things.
Not a lot of things needed. Paint the bottom, scrub the decks, and go sailing...But, yes, you'd have some dry powder for upgrades or unforeseen issues!
How do I buy this
Unfortunately it sold. Sorry. Note good ones coming!
My only problem with these older Bristols is that the cockpit coming provides almost no protection.
Is it safe enough to sail it down to Georgia as is?
What would it cost to get to Vancouver bc
Sail it there
A lot more than the cost of the boat!
I like the best part the engine can’t be seen and it’s onboard and runs fine
Must have sold in hours, if not minutes!!! Hope this wasn’t purchased as a flip, hopefully someone yearning for a bigger boat but simply didn’t have $30k got it. 🤞
I have the money I am just getting into boating thinking of doing the loop when I retire next year but I’m in StLouis
A sailboat is the last thing you want for the loop.
Sounds like you got a hull of a good deal.😊
Ha! Nice one. Someone sure did! Thanks for watching!
All the bulkheads are de-tabbing from the hull. I would expect some pretty serious twisting and further tearing if not addressed immediately. What a deal though!
Is this due to be on the hard for soo many years ?
@@optimus163 I doubt that would cause tearing away of the tabbing. I suspect this boat was poorly built.
Very nice deal
Yes it was!
This is a GREAT find ! I have seen boats in a lot worse shape for a lot more . I think it will be snapped up soon .
Couldn't agree more - on all counts!
Did this sell? How quickly?
It did. Immediately. The price was absurdly low.
@@boatfools you should quietly let me know of this kind of deal and only then do a video on it 😀
@@bexo34 haha! Noted! They definitely don't come around that often...
the intake water was "so clear" and not pink is because there never was any pink!
What does pink mean?
Typically, up here anyway, when an engine is decommissioned for the winter, you run "pink" antifreeze though your water systems: engine, boat water systems, etc. So, on a boat that's been "pinked out" the raw water strainer would be filled with pink antifreeze.
Brasso is a pain and never gave me good results. After 23 years in the military, polishing various bits of brass along the way and nothing came close to beating the speed and ease of Flitz. Do yourself a favour and buy a tube of it…..
Will definitely give that a try! Thanks for the tip!
Yeah Flitz for the win.
This is a very nice boat, esp for the money its a steal
I call dibs! lol!
"Professionally stored and maintained" is a relative term I guess...
It's too bad that these older boats are so narrow towards the back.
Lol. You think that's got a narrow stern? I have no transom. Same taper bow and stern.
She's wider than most for her age. If you look at the SailboatData plans, you can see she's not even the classic teardrop shape...But, yeah, narrower than the modern design, but that's why we love 'em!
ST winches, engine, electronics, sails ALONE are worth THAT much! Too bad I'm in southern Virginia!
Agreed!
6 grand. Only everything you got to go !!! Welcome to buying a boat.
Think you should clean before you paint ,not paint then clean
Looks like a good boat if you like washing machines.😂
😂😂😂 who drinks Rum and Tonic ????😅😅😅😅😅
You mean, who doesn't?!? Have you not had this before?
Never Dull not Brasso
Good tip!
Some lucky person has bought it if the brokerage listing is to be believed.
An offer has come in and has been accepted. Fast.
Me thinks you don’t know what “diamond in the rough” means.
Too old to invest IMO..
Well, she sold months ago, so someone saw the potential!
The rudder does not have any support from keel. it is bad. and This boat will not be stable at 40 knots wind. because of the Keel. It has very little short keel. BAD BOAT. WOULD NOT BUY IT. XXX
Well, the boat has already sold...But your comment seems a little loose. I mean how often are we sailing in 40 knots of wind, especially while coastal in Maine? She's actually a very stiff boat, which means she'll handle a strong breeze well - and because she's a heavy displacement boat, she will be comfortable to boot. The boat is fantastic and will serve new owner well. But we appreciate your comments and your opinion!
