rockford fosgate punch 500a2 amp dyno amplifier power test & dynamic 8 cycles 1330 watts oldschool

  • In this video i dynoed a classic rockford fosgate punch 500a2 power amplifier which i repaired. Just one opamp ( TL072 ) was defective and causes no output on the right channel.
    Tests include continuous power 8,4,2 ohms mono.
    I also tested with dynamic bursts with 20 1kHz cycles.
    Some manufacturers of pro-audio-amplifiers rate their amps with 8 instead of 20 cycles. So i decided to do it the same way which results in higher values for the data-sheet.
    In this way of testing, the punch 500a2 was able to deliver 1330 watts at 1 ohm (!) mono, which is a 0.5 ohm load for each channel!!!
    I remember the times where the us-pro-audio manufacturers rated their amps like rockford ( 20-20kHz continuous with low thd ). Seems like we meet lower standards today? What do you think?
    In the past i dynoed a modern pro audio amp which was rated with 8 cycles and guess what it was able to put out continuously?? It wasnt much :-D and amp went into protection :-D

    I had this amp new (500a2), and exchanged it for the 800a2 model! The 500a2 amp sounded good, but the 800a2 sounded better and louder. I had it pushing 2 Punch 15" subs from the 90's, and souded great! Unfortunately for me, the amp and subs were stolen, from my 91 5.0 Mustang.
    Nice video! The results are comparable, to the 2001 RF Punch amps manual.

      Hi Charles!
      Yes, the 500a2 is nice. My plan was to dyno the 800a2 but the amp is making problems at the moment. I have it on my bench and its way bigger than the 500a2. 8x big capacitors and 10 output FETs per channel provide lots of power. The 800a2 is the same in size like the 1000a2 which i also dynoed - check out the video 🙂 but the power supply of the 1000a2 has more muscles and also more output FETs. Great amps, cant imagine owning this new back then. My only new Rockford amp was the punch 40ix which was strong for its size. Only used it mono 2 ohms for 5 years and then gave it to a young guy who got his driving license.

      @@audiokeller1975 yes, I saw the video of the 1000a2 amp. Nice amp and video too!
      I have like over 20 Rockford amps now! Most of them I bought used, some new. Among them I have 2 P10002 from 2005 one new, 1 P8002 used, 1 P8004 broken, 1 P6002 used, 5 P5002 used one new, 1 P600.1bd used, 1 P700-1bd (2010), 1 P500-2 (2010), 1 P400-1, 1 P500-4, and some other smaller amps.
      Thanks for the videos! I've seen almost all of them.

    i had the 800a2 powering a pair of Power HX2 10s in High School. My Friends could hear me coming from 3 streets away. Ended up selling the 10s and upgraded to Power HX2 12s. I then sold the 800a2 and got 1500bd. i honestly thought the 800a2 was better.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but these amps are only 2ohm stable correct??? Now the numbers that you posted in this video of 1ohm is only for quick burst purposes not really numbers that the amp would put out connected in a CAR AUDIO SOUND SYSTEM correct??? I do know that this amp is not 1ohm stable that's for sure!!! So with that being said you wouldn't recommend running this amp at 1ohm stereo much less at 1ohm mono correct??? I have the POWER 500a2 version and I have ran it at 2ohms and at that load it gets pretty damn hot!!! What can be done so my amp doesn't run as hot at 2ohms??? Thank You!!!🔥🔥🔥

    • @audiokeller1975
      @audiokeller1975  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sometimes its correct and sometimes not. It depends on several things: impedance curve of the speakers / woofers , the kind of music you are using this amp ( crestfactor ) or competition. some 2 ohm subs have a lower impedance at their tuning frequency depending on the enclosure. and some are little higher which is easier for the amp. box volume and tuning frequency will affect impedance.
      so for mids you are often safer than for subs.
      my 500a2 gets warm but not hot at 2 ohms mono. its an old amp and i would check the idle current first before killing the amp because of wrong idle current. if its set too high it gets warmer like a car that idles at 1500 rpm instead of 750 rpms. im going to make a video how it can be set up correct in the future. 👍

    • @josea.garcia3994
      @josea.garcia3994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@audiokeller1975 How do you check the idle current so the amp will run at the correct temperature that it should run without it getting to hot at 2ohms mono??? Do you need a special tool to do that while installing it in your vehicle??? Thank You!!!✌️✌️✌️

    • @audiokeller1975
      @audiokeller1975  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      disconnect all connections and connect the amp to a power supply with a current meter. there is a video i uploaded here on yt - check it. there you can see the idle current. You can also just connect an amp meter in series to the positive power cable.
      Adding new thermal grease helps also if your amps thermal grease is dead. just check that out.

    So can you tell me what's the difference between the ROCKFORD FOSGATE PUNCH 500a2 vs the POWER 500a2 which I have!!! According to the manual it seems like they both produce the same amount of power on all the listed impedence of ohm's or would you say that there's a difference in Power between both of them??? 🤔🤔🤔

    • @audiokeller1975
      @audiokeller1975  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only difference is the label on the amp. they are the same amps . there is also a punch 800a2 and power 800a2 which are the same.

    • @josea.garcia3994
      @josea.garcia3994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@audiokeller1975 So with that being said there's really nothing different about them??? So then why would one be labeled as PUNCH and the other as POWER??? @@josea.garcia3994 Hi!
      I found a difference, i think the power series have a higher slope in the filters section. The 500a2 should have 12db per octave and the power 500a2 24dB per octave? It should be found in the manuals.
