    John, with in the past year I have been laid off from my job. After several long discussions with my wife I decided to go back to school. After some thought I ended up choosing to get into CNC machining technology and I would like to thank you and your videos for helping me make up my mind on what way to go.

    For the coolant get some copper tubing. Works great, you can bend it around your tools and everything.

  • @Max_Marz

    If theres one single little piece of experience i want to pass along for lathe work its, only use loc line as an absolute last resort when running automatic, parts here and there onzie twozies its just fine but chips LOVE to pull those off and distroy tooling. whenever you buy or use a new tool holder bend a nice copper hardline to apply the coolant best you can, keep the lines hugging the turret and tool so there is as little chance the chips can push or pull them around as possible. for things like insert drills coolant pressure is absolutely critical for their survival.

    ohhhh baby ! that a sweet looking lathe.
    looks like it has lots of room to work on it and service it,everything seems to be laid out nice.
    Can not wait to see it make chips with all it extremities haha.
    Good work guys :)

    Hi John. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Shaun from England and I am so impressed with all that you do within your workshop and the way yo have self taught yourself ie mills lathes. I love your videos so much. I am 50 years of age and as an older man who is very mechanically minded I am inspired by such a young man who has such a fantastic attitude to all you turn your hand to. In addition I love the fact you make family time at weekends and seem to truly have a fantastic balance between work and Family. Good on you.
    John back in 1989-1994 I worked at Hygena Kitchen manufacturers running a Fanuc Six headed Heian Router making centre Panels and Profiles on Doors. I loved it but left to pursue a self employment in mechanical engineering. Now semi retired I would love to invest in a Cnc Mill- Lathe. I would be extremely grateful if you could give some advise as to what machine to start with and some direction as to software to use. Like you I intend to self teach myself but would like something forgiving to start with. I wish you all the best John, Eric and all your family from here in England. Cheers Sean.

    I would definitely look into a mist collector for that lathe. HP coolant and a lathe that place will be fogged up in no time.

      With dual collets it won't be much of an issue. I used to run Super NTM3's at a previous job and they were fine with three turrets working at once.

    Wicked cool! That's a machine. I read the comments in the last video if this was the right thing for you to do. Never mind that. You have yourself an awesome setup now, and what a progression from that little Sieg just a few years ago. That said, I hope you know what you are doing, financially. You're young and eager, hard work and brains goes a long way. Best of luck.

    Oh, and I think you interchanged X and Y servo. I believe the lower servo is the Y axis which most likely works like a wedge that is pushed/pulled in and out. But I'm not 100% sure if thats how Nakamura realises their Y axis.

    Did the service tech have to perform activation on the control? Some multi-axis machines actually require this.
    BTW you don't want to know how much that levelling tool costs. It's accurate to within a few arc minutes. Only the Wyler ones are better.

    • @luke1811
      @luke1811 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Holy shit, 8k$ for that Wyler levelling tool! Thank god I'll probably never have to buy this myself.
      Oh and control activation by a service tech is pretty much standard right now, don't know which machining centers or lathes don't require it. It plays a pretty important role for warranty.

  • @mrbluenun

    Hi John and Eric,
    Why do you put up with a machine that has a dent in it direct from the factory, for this cost I would expect a perfect finish!?

    • @mattfeist471
      @mattfeist471 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say that a cosmetic dent that probably happened during shipping and moving isn't worth the hassle. You have to think of all the logistics of moving a machine that large. The time it takes, the money spent, etc. Not to mention how long they would be waiting just for a new machine without a dent they covered with a sticker anyway.

    • @sergegostoli9524
      @sergegostoli9524 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      probably got a rebate for the dent anyways, it's purely cosmetic so who cares ?

    Hi I hope you guys are going great. I tried to buy a few times but website still says sold out and I've had to settle for something else unfortunately. I don't make knives but I make metal artwork and do sell out on occasions but when I do I put a date on website when they will be available again. I'm no where as big as you guys just a small fish in the ocean, with only 50 subscribers on TH-cam and around 4000 on FB but I can understand how stressful it can be when receiving plenty of orders when all you want to do is complete current work. I would love to put name down or, Is there any chance of a deposit system? Love your work guys and look forward to watching the great videos. Cheers Rick Australia

    I would get away from those brass coolant balls you have if possible (might be the best for options wise). Reason being is that they have a tendency to spray the tool holder before the tool, wasting potential coolant, and when you cinch them down, they will eventually start to develop flats from the clamping mechanism so they become harder to move around for different setups (greater tendency to return to said that position). Loc line is awesome but they do have a PSI rating (unknown) as well as a flow rating (30 gph?), so they can be kicked around with high pressure. I wish I had a straight this is the best "product" answer but after my time trying to get it all figured out, I have concluded coolant lines are only best if they are considered a consumable to be replaced after x amount of time and wear, or the money is spent on coolant through tooling; awesome but VERY expensive.

    You should always pour the oil into the water and not like Eric did it. That's at least what our coolant sales guy always tells.

    • @scottgrafton68
      @scottgrafton68 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks like it's already mixed. The coolant we used in college looked like cooking oil but went white after adding water. Was pretty cool

    • @Diabolos1
      @Diabolos1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      As opposed to pouring the water into the oil? I don't think it really makes any difference how you mix the coolant as long as you mix it. To my understanding all you have to remember is to mix the coolant outside the machine and then pour it into the tank. Don't try pouring in the water and oil seperately.

    • @1AB09CC3
      @1AB09CC3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      [...]When adding “soluble oil” concentrate to water, the emulsifiers suspend the oil particles in the water, and will form the stable emulsion desired. If the water is added to the concentrate, the emulsifiers “release” part of the concentrate to “grab” for the water. This forms an “inverted emulsion”, causing parts of the fluid such as the lubricant package, biocide package or rust inhibitor package to be lost. Some or all of the chemical packages within the fluid may be affected. The mix stability, concentration, and the dye may also be affected by inverting the emulsion. The concentration of the fluid will be less than required and the dye (if the metalworking fluid is dyed) will be partially lost to the floating layer, leaving the fluid a lighter color than would be expected with a properly mixed fluid.[...]
      www.milacron.com/proper-mixing-practices/
      [...] It is a general rule that concentrates should be added to the water last and mixed thoroughly. One way to remember the proper sequence of addition is to remember "O.I.L.", meaning "oil in last".[...]

      www.dlindustrial.com/profiles/blogs/7-things-you-want-to-know
      [...]The first rule in mixing metalworking fluids is that you always add fluid concentrate to water -- not the other way around, unless instructed to do so by the manufacturer. Doing it this way ensures that the emulsifiers will properly suspend the oil in water, which is what you want to happen.[...]

    Again, When can end users start having an opportunity to purchase your knives? Your website has no contact access and is always out of stock with knives. What about resellers? A bit frustrating! Maybe need to streamline production so consumers can have an opportunity to own your knives instead of moving on to another maker. As well, I resorted to this media outlet because you have no contact option on your website. Come on guys!

    • @JohnGrimsmo
      @JohnGrimsmo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +zero 4U getting this lathe will definitely help streamline production and increase output, it just takes time to grow things the way we want to.

    • @tyroneshoelaces9742
      @tyroneshoelaces9742 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Understandable and I really hope you can find a solution to your delayed production issues. Why not have Knifecenter or Blade HQ as your resellers as other Mid tech and custom knife makers are doing.I purchase mostly mid techs and customs and in the arena of people I talk to, we have almost given up on your knives and purchase other makers' knives. I think your production issues really need to be looked at. It really should not be a long term issue since your knives are not one offs.

    • @tyroneshoelaces9742
      @tyroneshoelaces9742 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The knifemaker has a contract with a certain reseller and then the knifemaker does not worry about filling individual orders. They make in batches that goes to the resellers like Knifecenter and BladeHQ. I just bought several Ramon Chaves American Made Redencion 228 Midtechs. He has none available on his website because he just concentrates on a few options of this knife and makes batches of them. Check out the midtech offerings with these resellers and this is how most knifemakers do this

    • @tyroneshoelaces9742
      @tyroneshoelaces9742 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude. He does not worry about his books with hundreds of individual orders. When he finishes a batch he sends them to the reseller. Did you check out Ramon Chaves like I indicated. And even so, Ramon's knives in some options have sold out too on Knicecenter and BladeHQ. Grimsno has nothing going out at all.

    • @tyroneshoelaces9742
      @tyroneshoelaces9742 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      He would not always have the reseller stockede! He would have batches and when they are ready he ships. Then He does another batch. They will sell out too, but the resellers will have preorder and give customers at least a better opportunity to have a chance at his knives.
