A New Tool Helps Me Find $250 Of Treasure Amidst Heavy Trash

- In this video, I'm introducing you to a new tool that helped me find $250 of treasure amidst heavy trash. This treasure tool is perfect for people who look for treasure in areas with a lot of trash. The sand falls through the holes of the sand rake and the trash and treasure remain.
This is a great tool for people who want to sift through the top layer of dry sand. It is easy to use, but you have to go slowly. If you're interested in learning more about how to use this tool, be sure to watch the video! It is a great supplement to searching with a metal detector such as the Minelab Manticore. The metal detector identifies areas of high volume of metal and the sand rake separates the sand from the trash and treasure. You pull it along the surface. I had come to this spot many times and has used various metal detectors. I was previously able to dig the high tones but there was so much mid to low tone trash. The beach sand rake gave me the ability to sift/search through the surface layer quickly and efficiently.

That scoop is pretty much the same as we use for sand fleas in the surf to use for bait. Every once in a while we get trash and treasure while fishing for bait.
Yes! I always wondered that!
@@MetalDetectingNYCThanks Merrill and I will just have to get my finances straight and find me another sovereign xs. I loved my old minelab.
Now you are ready to become a surf fisherman! You got yourself a sand flea rake! Way to go!
Yes! I often wonder if surf fishermen get jewelry surprises. I suspect they do!
You're a patient man Merrill😅.What a trashy hell😢
It was strangely therapeutic!
@@MetalDetectingNYC, like doing the ironing 😂😂😂. Congratulations on the ring 🎉🎉🎉
Interesting, Merrill. Just an idea, get a white 5 gal. bucket with the lid. Dump rake findings on the lid where you can spot the goodies ,pick through it, dump the junk in the bucket, repeat the process.
That looks like a Louisiana crawfish rake. In spring I made up to 500 bucks a day catching small crawfish in ditches to sell as bait and to a pet store.
Exactly like that!
It's not trash. I take my metal scrap home and toss it in 5 gal buckets. Then take it to recycling center a couple times a year.
Merrill,I can totally see how that would be something useful in trashy sandy areas. Makes sense, Once I watched a archaeological dig, asked the guy if I could bring my metal detector to help….they looked at me and said “ we sift everything that way we don’t miss anything” Interesting
Yes they do!
Love all the Genius ideas you apply to being more efficient in your finds, ur the only channel who goes to this extent ty Willem 👍🏻
What a unique way to find nectar. That’s a pretty slick tool to rake the sand. It looks like any metal detecting-takes and teaches patience. I’m glad you found some neat stuff. Keep digging, Merrill! 😎
Thank you!
You remember Crazy Eddie? Those signals would even drive him.insane! 🤣
Fun video. I think most people think that the best metal detecting videos are finding incredible things, but honestly enjoying a place and an experience that is new to you is exciting even if you are digging trash most of the time.
You beat the dragon today. Most people turned away when they heard all that.
I find that those areas are full of good targets and lessons.
I like the old trash dumps but they are challenging.
I'm glad you did what I had only thought about doing haha.
I find it funny that I recently looked at this exact same rake as well as a Magnetic Pickup Sweeper with Wheels. My idea was pretty much the same as yours, to test them out on a trashy beach and see if they helped clear it. I guess we now know it works so thanks for taking action.
Nice tool. I once saw a guy who had made a neodymium magnet rake he was using to take the beach, seemed to grab bottle caps well
Brilliant! Yes ive seen that in the dirt too. The struggle is with the magnetic sands on the beach. Could you imagine how heavy that must get?
@@MetalDetectingNYC oh yeah, I reckon you are right, I use a monster neodymium magnet out detecting for artillery. Thing will break a finger over a horseshoe, but super handy for grabbing big iron
Awesome Sand rake!! I enjoyed your video.Good luck to you.
Thanks 👍
It is great to see someone showing how much work and trash that is picked up. Its not all treasures everytime like some people expect.
Good job to clean the environment.
Thank You
I do the same always when I out with the detector.
It is shocking how much trash you found in this little spot of sand.
But good Karma comes always back - - - - - - - - - - >Ring
Regards from Germany
Thank you to you as well! This is important to do so it doesn’t look like this spot.
I hope whoever empties that trash can doesn’t leave half of it on the beach with the holes on that sides of it
Glad you scored after all that work👊🏻
Hahahahaha, Merrill, I use to do that at Orchard in the 1980s. I bought a clam rake and lined it with chicken wire fencing. Would drag it up and down the dry sand and pull out coins, shell, garbage. Never jewelry though.... Gotta hook up one day when I'm down in the city...
Great minds detect alike!!!!
well done, good finds and a cleaner beach.
That tool is a cool idea
Thank you Joe!
Sand Flea Rake, very nice adaptation to filter out the trash. I use one to sift through the surf where the "heavies" drop. A big bonus is when the sand fleas are in abundance you create a fishing hot spot and if you keep a line in the water your going to get bit - a lot.
Great job cleaning up the beach we need You to come down to the Gulf coast and clean up our beach, LOL.😂
Deal!
I've added a strong magnet to my scoop to catch iron stuff on the outside. It works quite well in the water; it saves time.
Yes, ive heard of that!
Perfect Example of Merrill thinking oustside of the Scoop Great Vid👍
Thank you! 👍
I have spots very similar to that here and was thinking about using one of those. I am glad it worked well for you.
Playing in the sand, cleaning the beach and getting some good stuff..
Enjoyed watching, 99.9% would not attempted this place lol, well done on you finds 😎😎
Pretty badass that you have that level of discernment between materials. Hope ya find some gold!
Nice tool, love it. Great video again. 👍😀
Hope all is well brother! Moved from Seattle to Florida 👊🏻
Thank you!
Great video. Best wishes form Lancashire England.
Thank you very much!
Mel, you need a motor powered, mini, beach cleaning machine, that is self propelled. How cool would that be?
What a really enjoyable video I thought the UK was bad for rubbish you did a great job really enjoyed your video 👍😃😊
Thank you!
Nice Work 👍 Thanks for sharing with us.
You keep slipping into a mix of Squidward and Ray Ramano. That Tungsten ring was sweet!
Nice tool great finds thanks for vid.
Your video is the best explaination of the differences in conductivity as it applies to a metal detector I have ever come across, I was hesitant to get started into this hobby without a basic understanding, so thank you, i think this is going to be fun, specially if I stay away from the heavily trashy areas!
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the video, there is a party beach near me I have avoided because of all the trash, I may have to rethink my hunting strategy 😊
Yes!
I seen those rakes at my friends cottage, they are for taking acorns and shells out if the sand
Yes, repurposed for metal detecting. It wont work on dirt, but trashy beaches have a workable solution rather than one at a time.
Wow, that's a beautiful tool.
Its effective if you scoop and sift in the dry. Pulling on dry sand will do nothing. But the technique shown in the video will make it work.
Thats handy i might have to get me one whenever i go back to the beach.
One channel had a plastic food crate/tray (holes in it) with water foam noodles zip tied around the outside rim of the crate and they would dump the honey badger scoop in it to see what they found. Had a rope from the floating crate tied to their waist.
Ive seen the floating things. I like the idea that you have something that you can dump the sand on while in the water
Very interesting tool, gave some solid results! Have nowhere with anywhere near that much trash here in NZ, but looks like it did wonders in that spot! Cheers
New Zealand looks and sounds wonderful! Trash like this is embarrassing! In retrospect it felt good to take the proactive approach! Cheers Sluicers!!!!
Good idea.
Sounds like my grandma's front yard lol, old aluminum shards everywhere
Hands of a man tired of work - a miner
You are very much like me Merrill, when you know there's treasure somewhere, you have to come up with a way at getting at it. I also have a place next to a beach,it's a small forest where everyone would hide from the sun an picknic.
The trash level is the same,I thought to just dig it all up an sieve it..
It’s all about finding a way! Where there is volume you have to find a way to cut in to that volume of targets. The treasure is there!
A pooper scooper for metal. It’s like speed reading the ground. If you fill a 5 gallon bucket with pull tabs and bottle caps you can cash in for scrap. It’s good for syringes also i bet.The scooper just needs to be 3 to 4 feet wide like a push broom.Nice job.
With the wind noise, have you ever looked into those foam windsock enclosures for the GoPro? We picked up one off Amazon but haven't had enough windy detecting days to give it a test yet.
Yeah mine is bent out of shape. Im buying another one now.
Nice hunt
Thank you!
Very clean!
Thanks for the explanation on the tones………no one has ever mentioned on u-tube
great adventure, well done sir
That detector sounds like Bubo from Clash of the Titans
Merrill you know you can use the discrimination feature along with setting tone and volume for the VDI’s on that machine, so you have an easier time hinting areas like that
Yes but that is only to hear certain ranges of numbers at a higher amplitude. The problem is that what I want (gold) is mid to low tone. Gold would only ring up high if it is next to silver on a piece of jewelry. The only thing I could see helping is enhanced audio which would help me hear size better but in that soup it didn’t matter.
Merrill that beach is loaded.
Yes!
Every time you throw away a aluminum can it’s a nickel
That is treasure hunting taken to another level. 👏👏 Apart from the nice findings, the good deed for the day--beach cleaning--was awesome.
Hunters in Brazil use rakes similar to the one you had. I believe you can find much more goodies in that location.
Got to buy a few for the low cost price!
Love your channel & content.
Sir Merrell if I may please let me salute you for taking the time to clean your detecting area ,your not alone because I do the same thing here at the beach i detect, an4
Orchid beach in the Bronx has been around mucho years. Give it a try. My grandma back in 62 found 54 dollars at her feet one day when we set up our umbrella. Been out of that hell hole since 1978 not missing a thing. have fun

Good job. I admire your tenacity.
Thank you!
Have you ever seen the videos from RIO where they use long handle rakes to rake the trough in the surf to find rakes? It's pretty cool
Enjoyed the video! I can see how this mindless kind of thing can be soothing. Kinda like pulling weeds. I enjoy doing that😊
Yes! Even better when its treasure.....but cleaning the beach was very much like pulling weeds. :)
Merrill, From the heart I really enjoyed this video. Definitely a different approach. A detecting buddy of mine is a Pepsiholic. When we are out he breaks the pull tab off his can and drops it in his pouch. I asked him why he does that, and he responded his mustache was always getting snagged by the tab. I said "Oh, so it's all about you........"
Thank you! All you need to do is look at history! People with mustaches screw up the world! 🤣
People do twist off those pull tabs, I just metal detected ribfest grounds the day after ribfest, I found 6 or so pull tabs just sitting on top of the grass, I'm like wtf, who does that
It drives me crazy!!! I call those social anxiety pull tabs!!! They are meant to be BOLTED DOWN!!!! SMH!!!!
Interesting!! Thanks!!👍😎👍
Thanks for watching!
Good plan heavys go deep.
came back through for another view time and comments, toward the end i realized i was engrossed in search through the junk, the level of difficulty and the struggle, anyone can go out and hunt, some people film it,, some people film it well and tell a good story, thanks for the story time
that's awesome am buying one
To be honest, you could automate this system. A bucket wheel digger feeding sand and so on to a rotating trommel that deposits everything that isn't sand into a collector. You'd need a power source, whether a big battery and electric motor or a gasoline engine, to actually keep the thing working (or a pedal cycle system even), but you'd clean the beach and get treasure both.
Definitely a tool that would be great to employ for those of us lucky enough to get community service ‘invitations’ 😂
You’re a man after my heart cleaning up the beach like that. I just don’t get people that feel like they have the right to drop detritus everywhere like their mom is following behind them to pick it up.
Cheers, Merrill! 🖖😎👍
Thank you! this time I was tired of me, complaining about it, and decided to be proactive. That place always sticks out in my head.
just ordered one !!
Right on. Remember, if you drag it, it will get filled with sand too quickly. I scoop, then I sift to let out the sand, then I repeat. You eventually get in a rhythm!
Much love from California
pretty cool hunt.
Thank you!
Have you rver looked inside a house for treasure behind a wall and would a pin tracker find stuff in walls like a can of couns
It beeps when metal is in range. But you would get the same beep for a nail or a treasure. We have a much simpler fix when we dig a hole in the ground.
Thank You ... Very Informative Channel
Glad you think so!
Enjoyed your video...Subscribed Thank You
Innovative and being. Vrsatile is the key to success. Nice video Merrill and thanks for àlways making me chuckle.i bet the kids love you as their teacher
Thank you so much!
How can I get my hands on one of those scoops that's amazing
Here you go: amzn.to/3KSOaVP
Merrill, I'm glad you got paid with some treasure while cleaning up the beach. Btw, I love the Honey Badger scoop. I have used it several times at the beach and it is an earth mover.
That is awesome to hear Frank!!!!
Have you seen the SANDRAGIN? Looks similar, but has wheels and you can sift sand by tilting handle up and rocking back.
The water looks great! It was 102 in my car after work and no end in sight to the heat.
I got to get one of those beasts
Cool idea
Luv the vid. Great sifter. I try to collect one of each of the colored tabs each outing. It seems as tho you found all the colors in one scoop
Thank you! We tasted the pull tab rainbow!
I enjoyed this thanks
Good exercise 😮
The last video with the Nexus, now this new scoop technique, I think you found new and interesting ways to make old, close, given up on spots fun again. Nice to see it pay for itself on the first hunt and earn a bag of Taco Bell for the ride home. Nice, new, interesting info here. Thanks.
Thank you Greg!
Have you thought about dead Horse Bay?@@MetalDetectingNYC
Interesting, I gold detect in Cali where there are a lot of lead bullets. I know people haven't bothered to detect these high trash areas by the amount of trash still there. Its too rocky for this technique but gets the wheels to spinning thinking
Yep! That site had my wheels spinning for years. I think there is a lot more there. Trash and treasure!
Myself I would change coils to a small one. That works great
This is a small version of an old sand crab scoop / rake. They are usually made with 1/2" hardwear cloth. They work great around fire pits.
Pretty cool how you got so much trash out with that drag scoop. Get a few friends down there with ya each having one in hand Would go a lot faster maybe on clearing it out. Scoring the rings and bling, Awesome Man.. Happy Hunting. Peace
THank you as always!
That's a great idea. I do have a thought that may work faster. Get yourself a 5 gallon bucket and once the basket is full dump it in the bucket. Then take it home and go through it all. Save all that aluminum cause you can turn it in for money. Thanks for the video.
Wow like beach Janitor! Earning positive Karma.
Yes!
A place like that you don’t need a detector just good eyesight
I have a sand flee scoop and havee been debatingg on selling its for a detecting scoop.
Detecting scoops are more surgical. 95 times out of 100 I would prefer the traditional scoop. But this made a dent pretty quickly.
Oh! How fun! 😀 Bingo 🙌🏼. No sand near me but what a great idea. 🤓
Thanks Robin!
