_What marked me in that game was our equalizing goal. At the beginning of the play, Beckham had the ball, and Roberto Carlos and I went to tackle him. Beckham jumped. That was the moment when I realized that we were going to win. A game worth a spot in the World Cup semifinal... I would have never jumped that way. Beckham was not fully fit in that tournament, having just got over the media frezied-famous metatarsal injury, so this was a misguided view. In truth, some key players were missing (Neville, Gerrard), and although the replacements did very well, they either weren't at the same level or gelled with the team. Seaman looked nervous and slow on his feet aged 38 here, and he got punished for that. Then there was always that lorry up front; Heskey. Although, he played ok in this game. But really, the simple fact was that Brazil were better on the ball. England rarely strung a sequence of passes together, and that was the defining difference.

England scored a lucky goal. Brazil scored two masterful goals. Paul Scholes did everything he could, but he was all alone. Brazil looked even better a man down - which should not have happened. Not sure what Ronaldinho did to deserve red. (And I was still an England supporter at the time, though it had been waning since '98)

When England beat Argentina they thiught they had won the medal, little did they know a small genious boy 👉 Ronaldinho was waiting for them.
The English were soo worried about Ronaldo9 and Rivaldo they never saw real danger.
Ronaldinho hardly touches the ball but when he does the results are soo devastating to the opponent.
That was the effect of Ronaldinho,, he never runs alot but the few moments he has the ball are very defining,, he never also shouts to be passed the ball he just waits for his moment.
Amazing how the young Dinho managed to make his mark in a team full of superstars.
Scolari stack with him even as the media and fans wanted Romario, Edilson, Denilson or Juninho instead of Ronaldinho. The way he celebrates after scoring the freekick made his critics shutup and was it not for the cruel redcard you can bet Ronaldinho would have given more assists to send England home properly

English man here; this is the first time I've watched the entire game, having missed most of the second half at the time because I had school exams that day. Looking at it now, some things are very clear:
For one, Beckham shouldn't have been playing, he had only just recovered from a broken foot, and although it was important he played - as our talisman - in truth, he held us back in this game.
Secondly, the players that were missing; Gerrard, and Neville, were actaully replaced by better performances in Mills and Butt. But England back then was not so much about cohesive team play, as it was about superstars, and this was partly our undoing.
Thirdly, this was especailly expressed in their antiquated long ball approach, which seemed built around Beckham (who really had a poor tournament overall) and an attack built around the truck that was Heskey (although he had an above average game here).
Lastly, the best England players here were Ferdinand, Scholes and Ashley Cole. All three really didn't get the accolades they deserved for most of their England career; not compared to the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Terry, Rooney etc. Ferdinand and Scholes are the only two England players here that actually kept the ball well... and kept it on the ground! But that simply was not enough, and England looked inadequate against a Brazil team that wasn't even playing at it's best that day. This was the beginning of a frustrating, and overrated period in English football, before the capitualtion against Iceland. Something I'm glad to see the back of now. Today, we're one of the greatest in the world, and actually enjoyable to watch too, albeit still slightly frustrating.

I also missed the 2nd half because of a thoughtlessly scheduled English A-level exam. Absolutely blew the exam after the deflation of seeing Brazil equalise before half-time. To this day, I am dismayed that the teachers refused to delay the exam.

Very interesting watching this match after so many years to see how football has changed. It brings back a lot of memories especially of certain players, the concept of football in this era and the style which the game was played. You can clearly see football was played between the lines and players were able to pick up space to go one on one with defenders in a zone so technical ability would make a big difference in certain moments. In today's football their no spaces between the lines so technically everything goes to the wings to counter attack and gain some space. So speed, pace and phisicall fitnees have become the most important charcteristics of the modern game. I see a lot of comments which demerit football from 20 years or so ago but this is ingenious. Football changes but it is really nice to watch players such as rivaldo ronaldinho and ronaldo pick up thr ball and find space to exploit, it is a different game to watch.
Tactically Brazil got their system correct. The use of Edmilson as defender\holding midfielder gave enough coverage so the full backs could bomb on and have cover defensively. With the ball Brazil are a 4-3-1-2\4-2-2-2, without it they drop into a 5-3-1-2. As stated this was figured out in 2001 as they needed to qualify and their full backs pinned other teams back. Beckham was England's talisman and I do think he brought a quality which I don't think another player England did have on the right hand side. I think the issue was England's approach from the outset, negative in the nature that they marked deep and had close to 8 players behind the ball, Scholes who was a fantastic player couldn't really dicate anything for England.
That said with the injuries England had and the fact Ronaldo came back just in time for the world cup, the Brazilians were superior across the pitch even though they didn't play as well as in other matches.

Beckham has to be the most over rated player in the history of the game. Not only was he one footed and couldn't head the ball to save his life, but he was also yellow. He bailed out of a vital tackle on the sideline which led to Brazils equalizer. Bryan Robson would have taken a gash to his shin an inch deep to win that tackle.

But Brazil back then, actually had the individual players to reach 3 back to back world cup finals. Those Brazilian sides would dominate any era, even today.
Today's Brazil also rely on individual players, but those individuals lack the all time great talents that those Brazilian players had during those past eras.
If a team has 4 or 5 Messi's at once, that team can win nearly any tournament through sheer individual talent alone, without needing much in the way of tactics. That was the case with those Brazilian sides, where Ronaldo, Romario, Ronaldinho and Kaka could all dribble entire defenses like Messi but the difference is, nearly all of them were playing for the same team simultaneously in Brazil. If Messi alone can win a match single handedly on occassions, a team full of four or 5 Messi's is virtually unstoppable 9 times out of 10.
You could have all the set-ups and tactics in the world, but you can't stop talents like those when they're truly firing.

@ChrisakacIoud Except Ronaldo did SURPASS Messi's peak, and actually scored in finals, unlike the so called 'peak' Messi you're referring to. Both Ronaldinho and Kaka absolutely reached Messi's peak, especially Kaka when he embarrassed Messi in his peak. The same thing with Romario, who was great in every team he played for, and scored 1000 career goals.
And you're also wrong about them not playing together in their primes. Ronaldo and Romario played together with both in their primes in 1997. Kaka and Ronaldinho also played together in their primes from 2004-2007. So we are talking about at least 2 Messi level dribblers in both those Brazilian teams who could dribble entire defenses solo whilst playing for the same team.
And even post-prime Ronaldo could dribble entire defenses alone, he simply only lost his speed after his injuries, but always maintained his close-control and technical skills, which were at least as good, if not even better than Messi's, even after his injuries.
So Brazil with even post-prime Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka had 3 Messi level dribblers at the same time.
It'd be like having Messi, Maradona and Johan Cruyff in the same team. 9 times out of 10, no defense could stop them, unless you had equally all-time great defenders like Maldini, Baresi and etc.
With Sacchi's Milan, what you're forgetting is that it wasn't just tactics, but that Milan side had arguably the greatest back four ever, individually speaking, where each individual player in their position was one of the greatest ever in that defensive position. From Maldini, who's arguably the greatest left-back ever and Baresi, arguably the greatest center back ever. Equally great individual defenders can stop great attackers.
But tactics alone, are useless if the defensive players are significantly outmatched individually by the attacking power of the opposition team.
Even Brazil in the 60's had 2 Messi level dribblers in Pele and Garrincha. That team as a result, could not be stopped for the most part.
And that scoreline may have only been 2-1, but Brazil absolutely dominated in the second half. England did not even have a single shot on goal in the 2nd half and if Brazil really wanted to expend extra unnecessary energy, and if they did not have Ronaldinho sent off, the scoreline could've gotten totally embarrassing for England. Brazil saved England from total humiliation.

@ChrisakacIoud in 2006wc Ronaldo9 and Ronaldinho were not the problem the reason Brazils attack was whack was because of Kaka, he never fit in Brazils awsome attack like Rivaldo did. It's very clear from the 2002wc Rivaldo had a good link with not only Ronaldinho but also Ronaldo9 but the management quickly got rid of Rivaldo thinking they had found a perfect replacement in Kaka.

English is the world's language, so using other languages (either spoken or written) in international events like FIFA World Cup don't make much sense and not really appreciated! 😉 🎸

Not even with the help of the referee could England win this game. For almost 45 minutes Brazil played with one less man and without their best player. Ronaldinho got sent off unjustly, he did not even have a yellow yet and the referee gives him a straight red. What a pathetic team england is, just a bunch of hooligans.

How they choose teddy sheringham over Alan shearer, or Sinclair/dyer over mcmanaman 😂😂😂
    They could do better tbh.
