Sorry, but I have to correct what Emma said about the length criteria for mania and hypomania: Mania doesn't last 7 days as well and hypomania doesn't last 4 days as she stated. For it to be hypomania the hypomanic episode should last AT LEAST 4 days, and for it to be a manic episode the episode should last AT LEAST 7 days. Both hypomanic and manic episodes can last several months as well as the mixed episodes that some people also experience. When it comes to the downfall into an episode of bipolar depression the depression can last as long as a year or more, especially if untreated and can vary in intensity as well. I have Bipolar Affective Disorder type 1 and I have recently started bipolar treatment consisting of bipolar medicin, psych education and group therapy about my mental illness/disorder a few months ago in Denmark.

What about mix states? Do they happen only in BP 1 or BP 2 or both.
