WHY DO I ALWAYS SIN and WILL I EVER STOP? Will I ever be FREE of my sin?

  • Why can't I stop sinning and will I ever stop? We are a generation of sinners, and continuous sin has become our new normality. We need to be forgiven, we need to repent, but we lack the strength of real faith to even start repenting.
    Fr Seraphim from the Orthodox Monastery of All Celtic Saints on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, talks about his own experience fighting with his sinfulness, and shares that healing has not begun through anything he read or anything he was told to do - healing began through being loved by a spiritual person, and learning to see himself and the world through the eyes of his spiritual father.

    This week, on May 27th, we celebrate two AMAZING Celtic Saints - St Bede the Venerable and St Melangell (Monacella) of Wales. St Bede is an amazing protector of scholars and students, while St Melangell is loved by everyone who needs protection and shelter. St Melangell's love of all things and the strength of her prayer are illustrated in the story about how she protected even the most humble and helpless creature - a poor bunny 🐰 🐇 - from its hunters. 'Cover me, Melangell' is one of the most simple and heart-felt prayers I know.
    Icons of both Saints are available from the Monastery collection of Celtic Saints Icons - shop.mullmonastery.com/product-category/mounted-icons/
    The Monastery thanks you for all your support! Remember to Subscribe and Share!

      For four years I have lived and studied in Durham, a few metres away from the Cathedral where the holy relics of St Bede, St Cuthbert and St Oswald are kept to this day. It was during this time that God gave me the obedience of the Monastery on Mull, and I know that received this blessing through the intercessions of these wonderful Saints.

    I spoke with a friend recently in a time of repentance. I had sinned, and told them I was grievously sorry. And she said this. "Show yourself mercy, dont beat yourself up. If mercy is good enough for Jesus, it should be good enough for you". That is not to say that we should feel our sin is permitted, but when we sin we have an advocate in the father, and we should be as loving and forgiving to ourselves as god is to us - to the best of our ability

    Dear Father, I am a Benedictine monk and I suffer very much. But I love Our Lord. I look forward to your talks in the evening-a light shining in the darkness. You help me make sense of what I’m experiencing and you are leading me to deeper trust. This morning I read from St. Augustine: “For as love grows stronger we feel more secure, and when our feeling of security is complete fear vanishes.” God bless you.

      My dear one, may God bless and protect you and your son, Joseph. I fully understand your worry, but TRUST God and trust that His Love for mankind will reach out to your son and his generation, the same way He reached out to us and every generation from Adam onwards. Salvation - especially for us, more unworthy than another generation - is impossible for us, but what is impossible for us is possible for God. Have faith, dear one. Christ loves your son more than you do - think of that, and pray with that in mind.

      Think of struggle as a burning fire(Gods word). We are a steel cold rod that does not bend (turn away from sin) very easily. Put the rod into the fire long enough and it starts to soften (turn away from sin) until it eventually will turn into a molten state (turning away from sin) if the heat is hot enough.

    It's amazing how the Catholic faith continues to this very day. I mean, just think about that for a second: so many things come and go in this world, but God's church has never, and will never, die out.

    As it was in the beginning, is now and always shall be, world without end. Dear Brother in faith, do not lose courage. We are not further from GOD than at any other time in history. GOD is always right here. It is something of vanity to think we have a special place in history and that our spiritual struggles are harder than the desert fathers even. Temptation has always been here. The deceiver has always been here on earth. In Roman or Egyptian times the temptations were all around. Women went bare breasted, Greek men fornicated with each other, Romans had entire festivals dedicated to sin, just like our mardi gras. Our time is not special in sin. We are not less well equipped to deal with it. GOD is here always. Jesus stretches out his hand to us every day. Take it.

    I have not been to Confession in such a long time due to the pandemic. I have a good year or more of sin built up in me. Yuck. Was living with this girl outside of marriage that's not Orthodox. She probably is a better person then me, But I still would rather a Orthodox girl. We went to Vegas about 3 weeks ago. And that was the straw that broke the donkeys back. Amazing how God will use anything to keep things moving forward. I am 35 converted to Orthodoxy at 27. Was kicked out of a few churches cause I was getting jealous and building resentments. Then had to go to Jail La county ( not very fun at all would strongly recommend not visiting) long story longer did a 6 months stay at a rehab. And then learned alot about being a addict and attended AA did alot of meetings, recovered a bit and healed. Was able to mend alot of the baggage. And now would like to say I am in good standing with all Orthodox people and Churches. We are all human. Forgive me little testimony. If you ever wanna make a non Orthodox girl move out. Just turn those Orthodox chants up they wont last more then two days! 😆😆🤣☦

    • @SLVBULL
      @SLVBULL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is quite common to see new converts to the orthodox faith to experience spiritual warfare that they are unprepared for. Any new converts in our church I sit down with them and explain how their choice to become orthodox will not sit well with the devil. He will attack them on many fronts, internally (making the liturgy seem boring, repetitive, not entertaining enough), through friends questioning your choices, etc, the devil knows if he is to pull you away from church it will be in the early stages. Sadly we do lose people who come to orthodoxy but then a few weeks or months later never show up again for whatever reason. But I do my best to pray for them and give them the heads up on what to expect.

      @mullmonastery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Dear Larry, that is a difficult question. Sooner or later, I shall have to address it, I know, but I'd rather wait until I feel it is the right time (in me) to talk about it. The very simple answer, which is the only answer I have, is that one does not find a spiritual father, one makes one, one turns a simple confessor into a spiritual father by the way in which one relates to him. I'll pray and think about it, dear one, thank you for putting my heart to work.

You may doubt yourself, true, and the way we use His gifts, but not the gifts themselves. If you have them, He gave them to you and they are a sign of the trust and respect God Himself has for you. He would not have given you those gifts had He doubted that you have the ability to use them for your salvation and the salvation of others.

    There are people that cannot forgive themselves for their sins. Whatever you say, they keep on feeling sinful. They don't realize that God cannot use them for His plan if they keep on doing that, because you can't grow in the faith and teach others. By not forgiving ourselves, we offend Jesus, Who died for our sins. We MUST forgive ourselves. Thank you br. Seraphim for again a good and truthful lesson. God Bless you.

I remember seeing rare videos of talks you gave in people's living rooms during the time you were travelling the US speaking to small gatherings and slowly collecting funds for the monastery. It never occurred to me that at some point one would be able to hear these thoughts from you (or coming through you I guess) on a more regular basis. I realize this may/may not be short lived but of course I pray not. It feels like I have been waiting to hear these things for a long time and didn't really know how thirsty I was. I am sure you know that Abba St Arsenios, who used to be the educator of the imperial family in Rome, once said that, despite all his high education, he did not even know the alphabet of one of the brothers in the desert, who was an uneducated Egyptian peasant. Or that beautiful story regarding St Siloaun the Athonite - one of the brothers could not understand why everyone sought his advice, when it was known that he 'read nothing'; to which the librarian of the monastery answered: 'we read everything and do nothing; Silouan reads nothing and does everything'.

    Indeed He is Risen, thank you Father, from Germany. This has been a wonderful reminder of the love I have been missing from the monastery family of St. John's outside Essex. It is challenging to follow the walk out of our church communities and in a culture that is increasingly secular and separated from communion. Thank you for reminding us how we find the way to our truest identity through recognizing Christ's image in us and others, and reminding us to be determined and hopeful if we can be nothing else. It will help me struggle on with my clay wings to have this image in mind. Thank you.

      May we all be blessed, dear Miriam, through the prayers of St Silouan and St Sophrony - we are all their children, weak and feeble as we are in our spiritual lives.

    Dear Father, please pray for me. I struggle with the same exact things you discuss in this video. I hope to find a spiritual father who can build me and bring me to our Christ. Sadly, I had bad experiences in confession that stopped me from practicing this important sacrament. I want to take flight but I keep sinning over and over. I want to come back to his bosom, but my sins are standing in the way. Pray for my weakness, please.

    Wonderful words, Father, I find in them the exhortation received by Saint Siluan "Keep your mind in hell and do not despair".Thank you father and pray for me the sinner!

      My dear Marius, I feel this entire generation of ours, all of us, are spiritual children of St Silouan and St Sophrony. God spoke through them so clearly and taught us everything we need for our salvation. May we all be blessed and protected through their. prayers.

    Thank you Father. Father, bless. This is most encouraging especially on days when I feel I even lack wings of clay. I just often think of the words of St.Silouan; Keep thy mind in hell and despair not.
