He's not trashing Kiedis, he's just saying that Anthony isn't educated in music and seems more like he's talking highly of Anthony, showing how impressed he is of how he'll show him some written music and Kiedis will still add to it vocally without having the knowledge of what to write. He goes based off what sounds good to him.

I played guitar and wrote songs for over 15 years without ever knowing what I was doing. I only knew what my ears wanted to hear. I did that until a few years ago when I finally hit a plateau and couldn’t come up with any fresh ideas by noodling. So I started learning scales and some theory. What I learned is that nothing has really changed. I still write music by what I hear in my head. The only difference now is that I have somewhat of an idea of what I am doing. I have to say, it is interesting going back and looking at old songs and figuring out the keys, modes, etc.

What all the pedantic music theory nerds fail to realize and understand (and I say this as a musician who sings and plays guitar, bass, and drums; gives guitar and bass lessons, has played in gigging original bands for over 25 years and also knows quite a bit of theory) is that coming up with poetic lyrics that flow and memorable vocal melodies is one of the hardest things to do in music and Anthony is great at both. There are tens of thousands of skilled knowledgeable musicians who can't do it. And he also has a very distinct and recognizable vocal tone. So yeah, Anthony is a great singer/frontman.

He's thoughtfully attempting to identify whatever positive contributions Kiedis brings to the songs. And, that contribution is as important to the sound of the band as the musical contributions. However, it is not a secret that Kiedis' personality and 'lead singer disease' has contributed to John leaving the band in the past. There are lots of guitar players out there that would prefer not having to work with a frontman but in many bands there is no way around it. lol

Anthony sings by ear. He has an innate sense of tone and how to blend his voice with the bass and the guitar. He’s just a natural and doesn’t need any formal training. Whatever he’s doing is working for him, obviously a successful rock singer. Many “pop” or “rock” musicians can’t tell the difference between an F sharp and a B flat on paper but they’ll sing or play in tune magically with their sense of rhythm and naturally good intonation. The boy was born with a singing heart!

And sometimes we musicians feel shackled and restricted by what we’re “supposed to do” based on music theory, and a non musician can shed that self-judgment and pick what they think sounds cool, not what they think is “right,” and that can be very freeing for people who’ve been doing this for a long time. • @ianlange8108

Anthony is a lyrical genius, and clearly someone who truly feels music. Which is really all it takes. Feeling the music is more important than understanding it. That isn't to say that understanding it isn't beneficial, or that if you do understand it, you can't feel it... it's just much, much, much more important. If you want to be a successful music artist, it's more important to feel the music than it is to understand. There are musicians who understand the formulas through and through, and they never make it, and there are musicians (apparently like Anthony) who have little to no understanding of the formula, and they make it big... That's waaaaaay more common... much more important to feel it.

Its not an insult. Once you start listening to people who are masters of their craft (in any area) you'll pick up on things like this. This guys world is music and what's he saying is brutally honest and its true. To people who are partially familiar with a subject or not familiar at all maybe, they have expectations kf what they think they'll hear and when it doesn't match what they actually hear it can cause an erroneous judgment. Example - take a professional fighter posed with a question on his opponent (better a past opponent where there's no strategy to get under their skin , mislead or hype an issue) and they may say something like "..he's not a great boxer, he's not even in the top 10 boxers I've fought.." To a hobbyist or a simple spectator they assume the statement was about the opponents record or how he shouldn't be in the sport of boxing, but thats wrong. The fighter is using terms from his craft - a "great boxer" is the guy who is using his angles, timing, strategy and all other aspect of his training as it was designed. That same conversation could have also went like this "..he's not a great boxer, I've beaten way better boxers, but he beat me because he has unbelievable power...his defense wasn't the sharpest (boxing) but his speed and power were unbelievable.." So you can see that a statement heard from within that circle of specialization wouldn't be smirked at or taken wrongly because they understand the context.

In context Frusciante is saying that Kiedis lacks a formal education in music and does not play an instrument but that his capacity for "feeling" music and how much he appreciates music has allowed him to become an excellent songwriter and performer. Further, John pays him mad respect for his intuition in writing great music and keying in on notes from chord progressions to work off of that someone without an education in music *shouldn't* be able to do...but Anthony can...such is his passion, ear, and love for music again despite having no formal training and playing zero instruments. This never really changed from inception to present day, though Kiedis has become a capable singer in his own right, moving on from his early rap-rock semi spoken word style (which was always in tune and on beat even if lacking in "technical" merit).

Being able to carry a tune doesn`t make you a musician. Even Anthony says himself that he`s not a musician. He`s a great frontman though!

Tbh, if it wasn't for John, the band would have died out in the early 90s. John saw something in the band that not many people saw and I think he gave the band the push that it needed. Since, Anthony has came a long way and the band clearly does not need to rely on John anymore. With that being said, to the extent that Anthony's melodic writing has improved combined with whatever John has concocted over the years he has been absent, is really going to make for something new and really cool. I can't wait to hear what they have been working on.

Jim Morrison knew next to nothing about music as well. That turned out ok, too. Knowledge of scales and theory never hurt anyone, but that doesn’t necessarily make you a great musician.

Because Jim actually wrote poetry. Kiedis comes from the Sammy Hagar school of songwriting, for better or worse.

@Moran: Exactly. Or Robert Plant. And what would Led Zeppelin have been without him.

it would make you a good musician though, and if you are serious about music then why wouldn't you wanna be a good musician? Jim Morrison wasn't a musician he was a vocalist.

Same flavor of musicianship as Jim Morrison. Didn't know about "music" per say, but an artistic/poetic force that makes well for a frontman!

Right lol. He was being sarcastic. The whole interview (that this clip was taken from) was about their influences and they asked him about other bands like Radiohead and nirvana.

One must love the media. Writing everything in a way to create interest-not a care in the world if its a lie or if people get discredited or hurt.

Somewhat click baity title, but good content. One major thing John could have mentioned is Anthony’s extreme charisma on top of his inventive lyrics. But John is focused always more on the musical aspect rather than the lyrical content it seems. Nature of the beast. Anthony is in fact a poet with a profound understanding of existence.

I think that being able to read and play music has nothing really to do with creativity and the ability to write amazing songs that really hit you on an emotional level.

Not to mention, Anthony is an amazing lyricist. Californication is one of the greatest lyrics ever written IMO, wouldnt be RHCP without the words
