What a handsome boy John was. Shocking to see him a few years later, his looks and the whole impressions from his house in that Stuff short movie are awful. I'm glad he made it, the new album is killer, he is the soul of the Peppers.
Seriously, that guy had it all. The talent, the looks, the health, the youth, the money - I mean damn, he threw away all of that just because he was pissed off at being on tour, and then came within a few days of straight up killing himself. It was a spectacular fall from grace by any definition and he was amazingly lucky to come out the other side.
You can tell John is the little brother here when he was naively telling the dude that Anthony's "working on a movie" and the two of them were like "no shhh shut up don't tell him" and John was probably thinking "oh fuck oops I've said too much"
I think he is like the big brother because thanks to him the band is where they are..Flea and Anthony where dealing with big Egos in that period while John was more flexible, creative and...mature.

@@edybocman76 Ya, but they're laughing in reference to Anthony's musical talent too..Like Frusciante said in recent years, Anthony knows the least musically, out of all of them.
John was so outgoing in this time. Pretty much different than the way he was when he left the band and later rejoined the Chili Peppers. Actually, he was so different physicaly speaking as well.
this is his first time playing in a band, which is pretty unusual, considering the Red Hot Chili Peppers are a considerably popular, experienced band. So unlike the rest of the guys, his exposure to fame came all at once, not steadily. He went from playing guitar in his room by himself for 15 hours a day to becoming a rock star. So Flea says that John is handling the sudden change in lifestyle pretty well, which is sort of true. It's been said that John was pretty obnoxious around this...
I think it's evident here that John had figured out that he didn't enjoy fame of any kind. You can see why he got overwhelmed after this and left. I think the rest of the band enjoyed the spoils of their hard work+John didn't. He just liked music, and when he wasn't playing with the band, he just wanted to go home and hide+play alone. If I were shot into fame, I can see myself following a very similar path to John. I'd become obnoxious as I grew resentful of the life I was stuck in. Then I'd end up hiding, playing alone and doing drugs. 😂 He was just a baby back then, the other guys had 10 years of life experience and even more live music experience.
@KieronHamilton Are you mad? Ruined his voice forever? Forgot what he did for the Peppers between 1999 and 2007? He not only wrote many or maybe most of their songs, played the guitar, but also did their backing vocals and AK's vocals in case he forgot them or was ill (Rock am Ring 2004 e.g.)
I think he meant it ruined his speech. Not his voice. Ever since his heroin addiction he hasn't really been able to articulate his words and talk so fluently like he did in older interviews.
Imagine, being sixteen, just picked up a guitar and started your first band. This was on the tv and Frusciante became an instant hero. A few years, the same guy interviewed Frusciante in his Heroine period about Niandra Lades... and the short movie Stuff. And again Frusciante inspired the shit out of you. Those free form psychedelic lo-fi recordings are a part of your DNA now.

Man, John had it going on before he did all those drugs - good looks, talented guy. Really is a shame regardless he still found success, it could have been so much better.
Tbh that young frusciante tried to pretended he likes the rockstar life, he was really young and unexperienced unlike the rest of the band that were together for years and suffered a lot of s*It during those early years, But as he said in that "sexual anecdote" he wasnt the type of guy that would love to do crazy and nasty things always, he tried, he enjoyed for a lottle bit and he suddenly realize It wasnt the reason he was in a band, the guy suffered from success cause It dropped from one day to another when he was still a naive teenager
It also could have been *so* much worse. John nearly died due to his drug use. He survived a darkness that took away so many other rockers, like Hillel. So yeah, without drugs he may have been better (which is subjective, because his experiences are what make him so great imo), but also I'm grateful for the fact that he made it at all.
@7:28 I like Chad's little jab at Anthony there. lol. I went to one of Chad's drum clinics back in the 90s and he was making fun of Anthony, saying he can barely sing. Also, at the concert the night before, Anthony played guitar during Give It Away, but was only playing one note (the fifth fret on the E string). Chad roasted him for that. lol

Alright so what Flea and the interviewer are discussing here is how the band is handling the new level of fame they have achieved with the release of their latest album (the video says circa 1989, so that would be Mother's Milk). Flea points out that while they have in fact gotten more popular with the release of the record, they have been together as a band for six years now and have gotten more and more popular fairly steadily since they began.
