Great movies, but Reeves has absolutely nailed the vibe we need for an extended batman universe. Edit: Also I love that Penguin basically gets his own Jason Todd lol. Crazy that they sleep on The Batman. Thats one of the best comic book movies of all time no bs. The Penguin is starting off Faaaantastic. One of the best pilot episodes ive seen to a show
it definitely requires a second viewing to truly appreciate (at least that was the case for me) and i dont think any of them bothered to watch it again
Yeahhh, it gets campier as it goes on too. And I love it for that, don't get me wrong. But when she was defending it and saying that Eric was wrong, I was confused. How do you watch all of Gotham and not realize how campy and corny it is?? It's not gonna win a whole lot of awards, but damn it's fun
The Batman is the absolute closest any movie has ever reached in getting the same feeling as reading a Batman mini series, straight out of a comic. Not a surprise they don't like as much since they are not avid readers. Despite Eric's passionate defenses that he was once a reader and his love for the Animated Series, those are not the comics. Matt Reeves' film is a comic brought to life. What truly baffles me is when people say that Reeves' vision is too grounded when, to me, it is substantially more fantastical than Nolan's uber-realistic version ever was.
Can you explain in what ways The Batman is more "fantastical" than Nolan's? Sure, I can see that Batman is shot as more of a mythical being than in Nolan's, but the tone alone makes The Batman much more grounded imo. I think tone sets the standard for everything that is happening in the world.
What I mean by The Batman being more fantastical is a mix of many things. The dialogue and structure of the story just has that comic book flair that Nolan's just doesn't. It feels like reading a long miniseries. The art direction and cinematography likewise. Nolan's movies have this ultra realistic photography and dialogue that treat everything that's happening as if it was a real life event. Greig Fraser's version of Gotham does not feel like a real place, it feels constructed to be in a movie, that's a positive thing to me. Nolan's is a lot more sci-fi with the gadgets and vehicles, sure, but in the internal rules of that universe they are all treated as perfectly logical. I sincerely argue that Pattinson's Batmobile is a more campy and fantastical adaptation than all of Nolan's hard sci-fi military vehicles combined. I love Nolan and his movies, I just couldn't care less about his Batman ones.
I think what Eric was trying to say at 29:00 is that The Penguin is a character-driven narrative, as opposed to most comic movies having plot-driven narratives. The Penguin also uses third-person limited POV, which is why the camera stays with him all the time and we don't jump into scenes where other characters interact among themselves without him (which is third-person omniscient POV).
Especially considering how they didn't seem to dig The Batman all that much I'm pleasantly surprised they're actually reacting to this. Which is good, because from what I hear it's going to definitely play a big role in the sequel.

Eric is 100% right. Arrow verse and Gotham don’t get close to the tone that The Batman hits. This is real, dirty yet the city feels unique with its gothic inspirations. This is Gotham, and we haven’t seen this in any other show.
What Matt Reeves is doing with Batman is light years ahead of anything done with the character in live action. It's a shame some people don't like it. But that's okay, I don't see the appeal in Nolan's version, which you probably really like. I mean, I thought it was the best thing in the world when I was 14, but it lost its charm as I got older.
This was such a good first episode! I am super curious where Victor's story will go in this show. I could easily just be something like he dies and that is what causes Oz to truly become the Penguin. But I like to think he might grow and become Victor Zsasz! Especially with how he put together the scene with the body at the end, it really felt in line with what Zsasz is known to do!
Moving away from Batman, but still keeping their connection, I think it's awesome to see more than one villain maintaining their own ways of living, which makes everyone feel like they're stepping into a way of living their life. And Collin Farel's Penguin really brings that to the fore. With this, he now achieves this tone in Matt Reeves' world.
Kind of funny, I can't see Colin Farrell at all in this makeup, but I was a HUGE fan of Phone Booth, specifically his performance in that movie. And I see little glimpses of him from that movie, and from True Detective S2.
What happened to Oz foot? Short answer is a club foot. Long answer is guessing by Oz age it could be a birth defect caused by Thalidomide, morning sickness meds of that time...
I don't see the 'Book of Boba Fett' connection. However, this definitely has a bit of Andor where he has to constantly cover his tracks and can't let people know what he's really thinking.
I know Gotham is inspired by a number of cities, but the connection to the levee in New Orleans hits hard with this iteration. The flooding in the lower districts that leaves the wealthier citizens relatively untouched hits hard.

I enjoyed how fleshed out and real these characters felt already. Usually it takes a couple of episodes for me to care about what happens to fictional characters and feel like there's any stakes that I'd be concerned about. These felt solid and lived in for a first episode. And it's fun how endearing they made Oz to be despite him clearly being a villain. He has a kind of charm and charisma that feels unique to him. “No, the Book of Boba Fett.”
Like HUH?!
@@Alex_Lynch theyve never seen sopranos
@@Mari-tc4gw is that an excuse?
I enjoyed how fleshed out and real these characters felt already. Usually it takes a couple of episodes for me to care about what happens to fictional characters and feel like there's any stakes that I'd be concerned about. These felt solid and lived in for a first episode. And it's fun how endearing they made Oz to be despite him clearly being a villain. He has a kind of charm and charisma that feels unique to him. Each person he interacts with, the scene has a different weight and tension. Sophia is another stand out character as well. Her actress was amazing.
The tone of the show Gotham is very dark and gritty without foul language and I agree you didn’t see enough of it Eric I believe it’s you who didn’t feel like it was like that.
Melanie is awesome! Great addition 👍🏽
this show is a MASTERPIECE!
3:32 When did Calvin learn to Instant Transmission? 😂
Missed opportunity from the editor to do the abridged pop
To hell with Batman, Oswald is already a damn legend.
Maybe I'm just the right age to have experienced the new batman I think eric could be right. I re-watched the batman too many times and while I wasn't crazy excited for the penguin I'm really glad it's this good
He likes Dolly? Awesome
I’ve never seen sorpranos but this was so fun & tense love the moves Oz is making so far tho now that I’m rooting for him lol whenever the next batman movie is Batman’s gonna stop him
