  • Also known as Mcrit, local airflow around some parts of the airframe reaches the speed of sound. Find out how it works in this simple explainer.

    Sorry to disagree, but anyone can get me wrong.
    Mcrit is the airplane MACH number at which the 1st dot of a sonic flow appears on the upper wing surface. At this MACH number, there is not any shock wave yet on this portion of the wing.
    The onset of the 1st shock wave occurs at a MACH number called Mlim or the limit MACH number.

    Hi there, what is critical mach number useful for, under which circumstance do we need it for?

    • @DiamondAviation727
      @DiamondAviation727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Critical Mach Number or for short Mcrit, is important because when you reach this point or surpass, the aircraft becomes unstable, especially if the shockwave is over control surfaces like ailerons, or elevators. The shockwave also sharply decreases lift and increases drag over the surface it is on.

    Does the airflow reach the speed of sound because the air particles are attached to the wing?

    What is transsonic?

    • @ErimTuna172
      @ErimTuna172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When some surfaces has speed of Mach 1.0 is transsonic.
      When you actually fly an airliner, you are transsonic. At the speed of mach 0.85 as you watched on the video, speed over the wing upper surface is Mach 1.05. That's transsonic. Not the whole plane is over Mach 1.0 but some parts.
      Supersonic also means Mach 1.0 but in supersonic, airflow on every part of aircraft such as fuselage, wings, other parts, is equal or more than Mach 1.0. Whole aircraft is over Mach 1.0

    it's "mock"

  • @ErimTuna172

    Two methods to increase the critical Mach number are: thin aerofoils and sweepback of the wing.
