  • Where Are The Water Leaks On The Lexus Coming From? I'm struggling to find the cause of water ingress on my LS400, is it the screen? Sunroof drains? Or a door seal? plus the boot seal is also leaking.

Best way to test windshield is to put some cleaning foam on the outside and using compressed air from interior side to blow along the sides, if foam starts to bubble you know you have a leak. 😄

I wouldn't even hesitate to get your mate to whip the screen out and completely rebond it. My guess is that the shock of the impact from the incident that required the fitment of the new drivers door also disturbed the substandard bonding on the replacement screen - coupled with possible shrinkage with the extreme temperature differences the car has endured travelling from the UK over to Spain in recent years making the bond even more brittle and prone to leakage.

@@richfixescarsA skilled fitter can easily cut that out especially if the bonding is poor. At my old works we had bonded screens carefully cut out and refitted from all sorts of rare exotica with replacements unobtainable or on long back order from pilkingtons when cars came in for full bare metal restoration or repaints.

My W210 estate manages to have a leaky roof without a sunroof, if you brake hard after rain it drops water out of the interior light at the front so it must be getting through the screen seal or the antenna at the back which seems unlikely. Old cars are so much fun to daily....

    Hi Number27 !!!...... (i think i have the answer lol).....(and it's so easy)
    ...
Give the lovely old car a wash .... and just place a small heater inside to dry the moisture !!!
    ...
Then add some silicone dehumidifiers from a cheap shop and now here's the trick !!!
    ...
When the weather is cold and dry ... just give the "old girl" a polish with some "turtle wax" including the door jams and the troff where the water gathers by the boot seal and sunroof !!!
    ...
The rain water will turn into beads and just roll to the floor !!!
    ...
Then drive the car with the heating on "full blast" and then open the windows !!!
    ...
(YES) .. it will still leak slightly but not like a "moldy greenhouse" lol !!!
    ...
Dont forget to spray some "dash shine" on the velvet seal of the sunroof !!!!
    ...
HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND LEXUS MOTORING !!!.....(even polish under the bonnet .. every bit will help)

On all these old car channels it is the mistaken view that Toyota/Lexus are magical products. But they are mass-produced cars built with profit in mind. I was disappointed with my nearly-new LS430 in the day that had component and assembly faults. The XJ Jaguars I have had since had fewer faults, classier interiors with quality materials and were much better to drive.

I spent 25 years of my working career repairing water leaks in cars. Don’t remove the windscreen to repair one tiny leak and don’t use silicone as others have advised. Get some proper glass sealant from your auto glass friend. If a vehicle has been in an accident the shock is transferred throughout the car and body seams open up. Even a tiny hairline crack will allow gallons of water to leak in by capillary action. Use compressed air blown from inside around the windshield and other body seams and soapy water on the outside will pinpoint your leaks. Remember too that water can be driven in forceably while the car is in motion. Door and boot weatherstrips rarely leak except if they are noticeably damaged. Good luck!

I'd highly reccommend that when you get the leak sorted, you buy some reusable dehumidifier bags and stick them in the car and recharge in the microwave once a week or so, otherwise the car will be moist and humid for years. I sorted a leak in mine and I cleared up all the excess moisture in the air (and carpets, fabrics etc.) in a few weeks with a couple of 350g bags.

    • @ruinunes8251
      @ruinunes8251 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

2 more ideas. One idea could be leaving a proper dehumidifier inside the car for a few nights or every single time he is not using the car. A dehumidifier bag never will beat the proper mains powered dehumidifier on full blast.
Second idea is taking the seats off, take the floor carpet off and give it a proper wash. After all this time with that moisture in the carpet, it will smell. Nothing beats the nice smell of fresh clean carpet.

I fitted screens for 9 years
I would remove and refit the screen, I'd say the issue is rust on the aperture at the top and the polyurethane sealant isn't stuck to the metal any more
The screen is an integral part of the structure of the car

  • @iancroston1928
    @iancroston1928 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Noooo, don't go near it with silicone, it won't stop anything and will only make things worse long term. As you have a friend that's a windscreen fitter ask him nicely to remove the screen for you. You might find a rusty seam has caused the bond to let go allowing water in. He really won't thank you if you use silicone, you can't bond windscreens back in over silicone.

I wouldn't recommend using silicon too on the boot seal, someone tried that on my LS400 before I got it and it didn't fix anything. Was a hassle to clean up silicon too. Much easier to replace the boot seal with one off ebay. Regular Car Reviews had a 2007 Honda Fit and it leaked in the boot and pretty much wrote that car off with the amount of silicon used to stop it leaking. The windscreen needs to be properly fitted on LS400s otherwise they leak as yours does and if unchecked will cause the A-pillars and roof line along the windscreen to rust.

Agreed, silicone is for bathrooms as it is acidic to kill the mold. Petroleum grease works great as it never dries and is also a rust inhibitor as it is hygroscopic. Apply liberally behind every rubber seal. A light coat on the sealing surfaces also keeps the doors from freezeling in cold weather.

I drove south from Edinburgh in a 6 hour trip in worsening rain. I looked out at the car the following morning to see the wipers working even though the keys were in my pocket!
Water ingress had perished those large multi plugs causing numerous shorts... After repair I replaced the windscreen which revealed an extremely amateurish job from the previous job. A complete one foot section without glue...

That bloody leak drove me nuts for a while as it is near impossible to trace.
    But I DID !!!
Do you see how the plastic 'tongues' at the ends of the black plastic trim under the rear window has warped up with age ?
The boot lid acts like a remote fridge door light switch and when you close the lid it tilts the trim foreward and lifts its fixing plugs out of its fixings holes, thereby FUNNELING water in !
The Trim costs £500+ IF you can get one, so the simple solution is to remove it entirely and tape over those fixings holes as you can't see them OR the trim anyway when the boot is closed.
    Job done ☑️

Water leaks are cussed blighters. In the mid ‘90’s I was working for a Vauxhall main dealer, and sold a Calibra, which developed a water leak; the rear footwells were filling up after every rainfall. Ultimately, after several attempts at fixing the problem, our workshop had to strip the car of its entire interior, barring the driver’s seat, and one afternoon a mechanic drove the car through a local ford repeatedly whilst I lay on the bare floor of the car. The leak was eventually traced to a dislodged wiring grommet in the front bulkhead, which was allowing water to flow through to and settle in the rear floor of the car. Satisfying to solve, but very time consuming!

Also if the sunroof drains are anything like Audi's where the plastic drain tube connects to the sunroof cassette they leak from there as the seal shrinks. Just pull the headliner back more and you will be able to see.

10/10 for perseverance Jack. I hate messing with dashboards and clusters.

Buy some cheap plastic trim tools for working on dashboards. It will not damage them like those screwdrivers will.

Once you have taken the instrument cluster out don't switch ignition on as it'll throw up an airbag fault and used to need dealer reset. Local auto electrical specialist got our LS dash fixed for £110, said solder joints go dry. clean sunroof drains out with curtain wire on the RX or 5mm strimmer on the LS.

Captain Tolley’s Creeping Crack Cure (genuinely the name!) is what I’d recommend… it sorted water ingress due to a cracked windscreen rubber on my race car.

Drains in windscreen are very usual in japanese cars.... sooner or later, toyotas, nissans and hondas will do this... the japanese "good quality" relies just on engines and electrics.... all the rest is "under standard"... corrosion... suspension bushings... steering... are just awful...
PS - I live in an island where it rains a lot... even more than UK...lol...

Nightmare of a water leak, I am glad it looks like you have answer. I once had a pollen filter cause me no end of grief, trying to diagnose it we had the window out twice and various other attempts until eventually we sorted the filter. Happy Xmas!

    Merry Christmas to you.

Maybe the sunroof drain is loose, disconnected, kinked it blocked lower down. Have you also checked the door drains in the bottom, not connected I know.Maybe scuttle drains.Get a tube of Tiger Seal and seal that half of the screen. Don’t take it out as that could open a whole can of worms.

Clean around the windscreen with brake cleaner, and a tooth brush. then use Black sticks all to bond around the window. It will outlive the car. Used it on many a Volvo it will cost 10 magic beans.

Check the plenum chamber and drain holes under the bonnet nearest the scuttle, I'm sure all cars have these ? .... Use a plumbers sink un-blocker to poke down into the tubes !!

As I suspected, only way to fix it properly is get the screen taken out, look at the bond between the screen and the car, my bet is that when it was changed years ago they scratched the paint off the car back to bare metal taking the old screen out and bonded straight onto bare metal, over the years it’s rusted out that top corner and pushed the screen away then breaking the bond and causing the leak, screen out, sealant off, grind back, weld up and repair the windscreen surround (as it’s probably going to be holey), get it all painted, refit the screen, seen it loads over the years and very common on a lot of old cars.

Rain that falls on the sunroof and drops into the gutter around the sides and front of the sunroof opening, is drained by the pipes at the corners, and down the sides of the windscreen. There is no fixed gutter on the roof at the back of the sunroof, because the movable sunroof slides into the space that a gutter would need to occupy. Instead, there is usually a gutter fixed to the rear of the sliding portion, which collects any rain and diverts it to the side gutters, and down the corner drains. You should be easily able to remove the interior trim from the sunroof by pulling it downward, and when that is removed you will be able to see whether there is any corrosion in the moving drain which is allowing water to leak to places other than the gutters and drains. .Sunroof removal and refitting is pretty easy, and nothing to cause lost sleep. Happy New Year!

Easy way to clean drain holes is to use the spring wire that is used to hold net curtains up, just cut one end off and push it down the drain holes. Did a perfect job on Mercedes and stopped the water problem, then clean up the seals and apply some GummyPledge onto them.

You can get windscreen leak sealant that runs along the seal and finds the leaks. I've had some success and some failure with it. Might be worth a go.

Just a thought Renaults and Vauxhalls have a problem round the wiper motors under the trim panel there is drain holes ether side that take the water down through the front wheel arches, they block up and the sunroof drain pipes also block up doing the same thing, used to just blow them through with an airline to clear them…
