  • Hi everyone. You know what? The days of the grueling overhead brown coat stucco are gone. We've been using Dens Glass Gold on most of our soffits where applicable. Dens Glass Takes the hard work out of plastering overhead ceilings.

    We basecoat the densglass. Never using a sponge float. Then second coat it with sytheic finish. Float that with a plastic trowel.

    Could you possibly share some of the products you're using in the videos Types of cements and plasters?

    I usually block all the joints first and then come back start spreading entire ceiling… how is it going ken from fresno California…. 😎👍🏽👋🏽

      Oh gotcha I may have done that a timer two in the past as well Eddie but I found out recently. You really don’t have to block the joints in but maybe it’s a good idea. Thanks for chiming in.

      Hi Eddie, I have an issue with some of the joints on this dens glass job. It’s been done for a year and now ther has been some cracking at the joints. I remember a couple things. #1 the framing was sub standard and wiggled. I said that in the video. #2 the material we were using got hard really fast. No matter how much water we added it didn’t seem to slow the set time. This is a character of old material. #3 also they built a deck just below this ceiling where they were securing the deck to the concrete below. It probably was shaking the whole house especially right here in this area. So now I have ro fix the crackling.

    Could a stucco color coat be applied after that skim so that it matches the walls?

    Bottom line is that its simply drywall with a type of fiberglass covering.
    For a porch ceiling, rocklath or regular drywall with cornerites in the angles and plastered with a Gypsolite brown coat would be just as good.
    As for using the Densglass on exterior walls as they are doing today, there have already been lawsuits because of failures.

    • @AbersonPlastering

      Please elaborate regarding lawsuits using Dens glass. What exactly failed.

      @@AbersonPlastering Cant give any specifics Ken other than there have been failures of steel frame commercial structures where it was used. Talking about shopping center type projects.
      The blame is placed on improper flashings mostly, which of coarse causes failure of the Densglass.
      Would you prefer a frame house with Densglass over a masonry house?

      I still don’t know what you mean the dens glass failed. In what way does it fail. Also there is no way an inspector is going to pass regular drywall on an porch ceiling. Regular drywall wont work as the paper on the drywall will disintegrate from the moisture in the base coat

      @@AbersonPlastering From my understanding Ken the failure comes as a result of water infiltration damaging the Densglass.
      Lets face it, it is drywall with a different covering than regular drywall.
      Any cuts leave an exposed edge of gypsum, which im sure isnt treated properly in all cases.
      That might be o k in a protected area like a porch ceiling or a soffit where it isnt subject to direct moisture.
      As for drywall used on porch ceilings, i can assure you it is used, and passes inspection.
      BUT, only in places where it is protected from the elements.
      As for plaster over drywall, ive actually done it, with no issues.
      Now im talking about using a brown coat and a lime white coat finish.
      Turning the sheets backwards shows paper looking much like the paper used on rocklath, but the mud will stick on either side.
      Drop some on the wood floor and leave it a few days, see how difficult it is to scrape it off.
      As for the paper deteriorating, consider that dry wall mud is mixed with water also.
      In fact years ago it only came in a dry form, requireing mixing with water.
      Consider that im now very close to my 89th birthday, i can drive you by houses we stuccoed over regular galvanized chicken wire 65/70 years ago.
      And they still look just fine.

    Isn't the metal mesh necessary for the stucco?

    • @Phazetic99
      @Phazetic99 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For traditional stucco, yes. Sand and Cement stucco is technically mechanically fastened to the walls, meaning that the stucco is emebedded within the metal lath and the lath is connected with nails or staples. What he is using is a polymer base coat. Polymer means that it bonds at the molecular level by chemical means, not mechanical. So his mud there does not need the lath. The fiberglass mesh is used to prevent cracking on the joints. It is kind of similar to a drywall system

    Hey I am a carpenter. What is speed floating?

    • @AbersonPlastering
      @AbersonPlastering  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim. Speed floating is when the already applied material surface becomes dry enough to knock down any high spots without worrying about creating any divots caused by your float. Speed floating is when you are working behind three plasterers or a pump crew trying to keep up before the wall becomes to dry to move the mud around. Speed floating is a last stitch effort to float the wall before having to scrape the wall flat because it is no longer floatable. Have fun!
