    I was in the stadium for this, and in fact all the track evenings. A golden era of 400m running, that's for sure. Great memories from Barcelona. Feels like a more innocent time.

      M'eh. It's an event that gives average runners a chance at gold and if a baton change gets fouled up you can get disqualified.
      It will never be better than the 100m sprint

    • @Crazy_Diamond_75
      @Crazy_Diamond_75 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@A-small-amount-of-peas There's not enough time to build up dramatic tension in that race. In the 200 and 400, the races are short enough that everyone is still sprinting, but long enough that dynamics can develop over the course of the run.
      The 4x400 takes what is good about the longer sprints and adds all the complexities of relay matchups to it.

    Whoever was responsible for conceiving that Vallmon-Watts 1-2 lineup deserves a medal. Those two were LETHAL. Same lineup the following year when they obliterated the world record again, but having the two of them lead the relay was something brilliant, especially since you’d think Watts, having won the Olympic title, would have been put up last. 43.1 for his split. Amazing

    Think about this: Michael Johnson, probably the best 400 runner in history, anchored the 4x400 in one Olympic Games.

    • @helpinghal
      @helpinghal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Michael did not run the individual 400m at these Olympics. He was heavily favored to win the 200 but IIRC didn't even make the final due to food poisoning. Michael was put in the relay at the last minute, probably not best to have him anchor. In 1996, Michael suffered a slight muscle pull at the end of the 200m and told the US coaches he would not be available for relays. Yes, he did anchor in 2000 but of course that team was retroactively disqualified.

    UV gotta respect Regis on the last leg for team GB he would run 1 4x400m relay a year n if my memory serves me right in the Tokyo w/Champs he ran 43.7sec for his leg of the relay I wonder what he managed here in Barcelona? 3rd place with 3 specialists at 400m n a world class 200m sprinter to make up the team is mighty competitive in my eyes. Barcelona was the best performance of Cuba in Olympic games of all time. That relay 4x400, except Roberto Hernandez, the runner who closed the relay, the others were not great runners, but they were a relay very coupled, and that day ran very well. Cuba also won Bronze in the 4x100 and it was exactly the same. They trained a lot for those games.
