  • CoolCleveland's Thomas Mulready caught up with The Audiophiliac, Steve Guttenberg of CNET.com in Chicago at AXPONA 2017.
They talked about some of the favorite records he uses to evaluate audio equipment.
He mentions Radiohead and Chesky Records, among others, but his biggest piece of advice is to listen to music you love and are intimately familiar with.
    Happy listening!

FYI- He got the name wrong on The Banner Saga. It's actually by someone named Austin Wintory.

My hero, Paul W. Klipsch, said to listen to a live performances of whatever music you most enjoy. Live music is Klipsch's reference. Sadly, most audio buyers haven't heard a live symphony or jazz ensemble lately, so they are easy prey for sales people who will push what's most profitable, rather than what is the accurate system. I use listening to the big grand piano downstairs in our lounge or across the street during live performances of professional musicians at the big retirement home here for a constant reference source. I don't run from shop to shop hearing doctored (too often!) demo records in A-B comparisons. My old Cornwall II (upgraded with titanium domes and new crossovers) still recreate the impact of standing next to a grand piano, in terms of attack, transients, presence, sound pressure or frequency. The Corns go down to 38 Hz. Lowest register on a nine-foot grand is 32.7Hz, although in my listening room, I won't hear the pure signal wave in 18 feet of listening distance. Klipsch is the oldest manufacturer of audio speakers in North America and founded by a Stanford graduate. Anyone today can put a bunch of cheap Chinese transducers into an enclosure, apply a little snake oil and -Viola! - a "new", "revolutionary", "break-through" pathway for sonic ecstasy. No, I have no financial interest in the marketing of Klipsch products, not do I know of anyone in the audio business. These are my findings from over 61 years of involvement in building audio gear, sampling equipment and listening to the real thing, just to keep my old ears calibrated. If the Almighty didn't want us to listen, he wouldn't have given us ears.

How can audiophiles care so much about sound and not give the tiniest shit about video? I need to go puke now

Steve, were you nodding your head in agreement with the interviewer?
I am asking because my opinion is that most of their material suck. They occasionally get it right, like with, for example, a handful of Abbey Road pressings. Due to their abysmal batting average, I no longer waste my time nor my $$ on MOFI (except for, perhaps, their record sleeves).

So I got the Radiohead CD that Steve referenced. My son’s friends (high school sophomores) are like, why?
They were right. There’s no music. There are some sounds that seemed as if they might develop into a melody, but that didn’t happen.
Thank goodness I got it from my library.

You have to keep listening the melodies are very subtle. Present tense is a great example the guitar melody is fantastic!

I wonder what you're listening to nowadays, to understand your perspective better.
