    This was my favourite show back in 1974 when I was seven. Great to see it again!

      Maddy G yeah, same for me, though Mum would send us to bed when she'd catch us watching it. I was 7 my brother 8. I miss Australia of those days.

    I'm 49 years old, and the time-slot I remember is early afternoon (in Adelaide). I'd get home from school and it would be starting (4pm?)... I've always loved the intro music.

    Brilliant. As a little tacker, with a single mum, I still remember watching this show and wishing Paul Cronin could be my dad. He was so cool on his motor bike. That was over 40 years ago - yet I still remember the music theme. That says something.

      I used to watch him as well, because we had the same surname. The bike was pretty good. But the coolest guy was Grigor Taylor.

    This brought on the tears.. My dad past away not long ago and watched this it brought back so so so many memories back to me.. My dad and I would sit back and watch this together

    I'm 22 years old and used to sneak out of bed when I was about 14 to watch Matlock police on WIN at about 3:00AM. I'll take Matlock police and Homicide over CSI and NCIS any day.

      That's because you're an Aussie and you like the cars in it! This was on when I was 12 on Channel 10 in Melbourne everyday during the Christmas holidays in 1980 at 3pm every weekday and I was fortunate to watch 8 weeks of it back then and I watched it religiously. These were the best episodes with the Monaro in it!!

      I am pretty sure that all the Crawford Productions themes were "KPM".
      Collections of production music on LP records.
      Many of them were UK composers earning "pocket money" making these themes.
      The one for "Bluey" got nicked by Channel Nine for the Cricket theme.

    A 70's kid in Australia with parents in their 30's. Loved this show amongst many other great Aussie shows of that era. Hearing this theme brings back so many fond memories. So glad my parents chose this country for me to be born and raised.

    Matlock Police was an evening family staple around the TV, Michael Pate's son also starred in an Australian movie made many years ago. Thank you Crawford Productions for providing quality Australian entertainment back in the good old days when TV was actually worth watching and not the rubbish we get these days.

    Loved the police dramas of the early 70's. Dad used to watch them all... I was a toddler who only heard the music.

    I used to love the first lots of episodes with the HG Monaro in it (and I think at one stage just for a few episodes there was a replacement HK Monaro) I used to watch this at our old house in Harp Road East Kew in the sun room when I was 2 for gods sake!!! And went absolutely ballistic when there was a chase with the Monaro and it had the siren on!!!! Great memories and I think that might be the old Ringwood Police Station that they pull into during the opening here!! Da da da da da dananam danum dananum!!!!!

    There's also an ad I noticed for Holden Monaro on TH-cam from 1969 filmed outside the Orica building in Albert & Nicholson Street in the city that looks all very muich like a 'Matlock opening' too...interesting to watch.

    Really had the best story telling of all the old police shows
    Picking up a slight hit of 'chariots of the gods' in the theme which I never noticed before

    1980 every week day at 3:00 on Channel 0 they played about 80 episodes over Christmas and I watched every one of them religiously! The motor bike (Solo One) and the Monaro (Car 6) were what made this show!! Yes I remember their call signs! I think the motor bike rego was HK 136 and the Monaro KTP......

    I worked at CP in the 1980s. By then, the company was in something of a decline and from memory, was sold in the late ‘80’s. I didn’t get to work for them in the heyday of Matlock Police or Division 4 but I knew a lot who did. Hector Crawford was a remarkable man who inspired people.

      Crawford productions keep it very tight,they want you to buy the dvd sets even now that DVDs are almost obsolete.

    Just bought Matlock Police Vol 1 from Crawfords (7 DVD's covering the first 26 eps) not cheap @$60, but when you consider its 7 DVD's, I think it's worth it for the memories (and cars) LoL

    Yeah, Tom replaced Grigor but his character was not as tough as Grigor's was, who was almost a Dennis Grosvenor from Homicide type from memory?. Anyway, one episode begins where that guy was was quite common guest in Homicide and Div 4, meets Tom in a service-station driveway, and for some reason an argument and then fight starts between them. The guy is in a blue singlet and obviously more built than average for those days..he totally mops up the servo driveway with Tom without even really breaking sweat..he doesn't really badly injure him because he's not trying, but roughs him up and makes him look silly ...
    ..then turns out he is an ex SAS commando Vietnam vet or something?

    What does Matlock stand for? Is it a city? Of course, I’ve heard of Michael Pate, the Hollywood actor who appeared in countless TV and movies appearances, but I’ve never seen this show.

      Matlock was a fictitious town in Victoria. There is a real Matlock in Victoria but that town is a lot smaller and bears no resemblance to this tv Matlock.

      Yeah, I seem to remember there was one ep with two female criminals maybe escapees on the run...one hard-case butch-looking one, and one gorgeous almost Cheryl Rixon look one. The butch one was a really nasty violent piece of work.I think she maybe actually got the drop on Tom and beat him up. I'd like to see that ep again.

      No more Vicpol cops period...now we the police 'service" , with (170cm male and 155cm female-with gender-equal recruiting)-- "Demolition Man "smurfs... in baseball caps... who do a lot of 'soft-target" policing.The sons and daughters of komrade Christine.
      One of the funniest and saddest, all in one, things I've seen recently was the police 'swarming' response to Sudo trouble on Chelsea beach.
      You should have seen them.
      If I laugh at them, imagine the Sudo's attitude to them.

    And it's not Matlock, the real Matlock town was destroyed in the 1939 bushfires and never rebuilt.

      'the fictional Matlock, Victoria (a real Matlock does exist in Victoria, but it is much smaller than the town depicted by this series, which is loosely based on Shepparton). These program's introduction featured an overhead shot of a town with a divided road, thought to be of Bairnsdale in Victoria.'

      There is still a Matlock in Victoria with about a population of 4 people up near Woods point on the old road to Mansfield.

      The first opening credit scene in this clip I believe is Moe (the then-electrified Gippsland line is a giveaway with the car on Princes Highway heading west). The show itself was filmed in and around Ringwood, Lilydale and Healesville and more generally outer north eastern Melbourne.
