  • Mirkwood, once called Greenwood the Great and later named Eryn Lasgalen, was a great forest of Middle-earth, mightiest of all in the later days of the world. Today, we explore that region and its history! Please let me know your thoughts on the history of Mirkwood in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    I do imagine a silly scenario, the Silvan Elves really didn't have much to do in the Years of the Trees and First Age, so thinking of a Silvan Elf. You live under a never changing night for an age and then all of a sudden BOOM, the Sun just appears, you have no idea what it is, why it is there or what it does only it makes everything brighter and it hurts to look at it, then after a few hours it sets, and you a back to night and you are very confused, but then the next few hours, the Sun rises again and it burns and confuses you more, you wonder if it's here to stay this time. The poor Silvan Elves, they probably spent the first months if not Years just screaming in fear of this great big Sun showing up.

    "This is not the Greenwood of old...no matter what may happen stay on the path!"
    Not as old as Fangorn
    Not as beautiful as Lorien
    But still just as important to the world and stories therin
    I always like to think that the darkness lifted from the forest and it returned to as it was

    Correction, Legolas would become the most renowned elf ever. Like every super hero is based off the mythology of Superman, Legolas has defined what we think elf is. So much so he has an emoji🧝🏻‍♂️. I’m cherry picking yes, but I think too many people sleep on Legolas’s impact on the world of fantasy, and it’s just like Tolkien to slip in that the most famous elf, is also the least impressive in his elven hierarchy. Message…I think so.

    • @UnholyWrath3277
      @UnholyWrath3277 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think Mirkwood is like the real old, dense and mysterious forest in our earth. We never know what kind of creature lived inside the forest. It is eerily beautiful, a place of raw nature but yet dangerous if we underestimate its power.

    I always thought Mirkwood was inspired by The Black Forest in Germany.

    • @MerkhVision
      @MerkhVision 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s pretty understandable! But it is believed that Tolkien was inspired by a real place actually called Mirkwood in history but it was east of the Carpathian Mountains. But some scholars think it might have also been a generic name given to big scary forests back then so it’s possible some Germanic peoples could have also called the Black Forest by a similar name!

    Great coverage as always. Only thing that wasn’t made as clear was how the silvan came to be. The Nandor mating and mixing with the Avari is how we get Silvan. It is always interesting to me that the Avari never came west, but there is a forest in Beleriand that houses Avari. Maybe these were escapees from Angband or perhaps servants of Morgoth. Look up Taur-im-Duinath to know what I am talking about.

    Wood Elves are probably my favorites.The scene with the two getting drunk and allowing Bilbo to steal the keys and the banter over the heavy barrels makes them more like the merry people Tolkien wrote about rather than the washed out shadows of the movies.I am not sure they would all leave,perhaps they went wandering and found new woods in distant places after Sauron's influence was gone.After all Tolkien hints that there were lands unknown to the people we hear about in LOTR.Were there distant woods like the Russian taiga, perhaps?Places where few Men had ever set foot?
