I just wanna mention, the guitarist is playing a baritone and still manages to solo like a champ, using a capo to change the scale is such a versatile way to play
Beni plays a Tsugaru-style Futozao (Thick Neck Size) Shamisen. The sharp, flashy style of tsugaru was played in the streets by the bousama (blind musicians) who developed a more lively style. Blind musicians at the beginning of the 20th century, including Shirakawa Gunpachiro Takahashi Chikuzan and sighted players like Kida Rinshoei developed a new style of play, based on traditional folk songs ("min'yo"), but with a lot Improvisation and eye-catching finger work. This style - known as Tsugaru-Jamisen, after the native region in northern Honshu - is relatively popular today in Japan. The virtuoso tsugaru jamisen style is sometimes compared to bluegrass banjo. The classic pick is called Bachi. The koto is a Japanese zither and the national instrument of Japan. The bamboo flute is called a shakuhachi and the second drum kit is a wadeiko The singer's very broad vibrato is typical of Shigin, a traditional poem concert style. Suzuhana Yuko, the singer of the Wagakki Band, is a certified teacher for Shigin.
Thank you! This additional background is appreciated. I'm in my 70's. My usual music is opera and the American Song Book. However, this is the best contemporary band.

They did this back in 2015 I think. They did shows in NYC as well and there's a video where they show the lines around the block. They went onto also go into Europe as well. This was when they were relatively new. You can also find some radio interviews they did with American stations still up. They have never officially said why they didn't do it again but there's been speculation in regards to the wider attitudes of the Japanese music industry, namely there's some sense of inferiority they have with the outside world i.e. what works in Japan doesn't work abroad and it's considered weird. Wagakki did decently outside of Japan, and I remember Yuko saying that they were scared at first, but were so blown away by their foreign fans, with some going up to them and speaking to them in Japanese. Probably the biggest elephant in the room was their level of English fluency, I only really heard Yuko and Beni speak it and it was to a basic level, whenever they had to express a more complicated idea they needed an interpreter (I think that would've changed if they decided to tour more regularly though). Kind of hard when you're trying to express your inspirations and musical style. The interviews they do with Japanese outlets are so much more in depth and interesting. That said, the purpose of the tour was to try to market them abroad and make them big outside of Japan, it seems that the venues they were getting abroad were smaller than in Japan, and while they were huge in Japan, they were much smaller abroad. It seemed like they preferred just staying in Japan and doing bigger venues rather than dealing with international travel and smaller venues. Still they did express interest in going to Taiwan and Indonesia in recent years, which likely isn't going to happen now though.
The Shamisen player is insanely beautiful and skillful. Every time she takes the stage you can feel her stage presence, her beauty is as good as her skills, just amazing. This girl is a Japanese treasure.
