    Love your videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience, quick question, I have 12 Sierra 1500 with a 5.3, I did a DoD delete (sadly after a DoD lifter decided to spin on me) I didn't do the VVT delete when I did the DoD delete, is it possible (and safe) to disable VVT without doing a full deleting, or should I keep it somewhat active, eventually I will do a full delete and up my cam to a stage 3+ for that power and sound every V8 should have, but until then I'm trying to safley squeeze the most out of my 5.3, pretty much everything is stock aside from the lifters and cam,

    2016 Yukon L83 with cam with a 4 degree limiter, ported heads and a 3000 stall. No power from a dig but I thought it was due to the 3.08 gears. Do I follow these steps for my setup as I have a limiter or do I follow a different approach? Turning off the VVT with a limiter bad, good or indifferent? Trying to get it to have better take off as it feels like I'm pulling a trailer out of the hole. Loving your videos!

    Thanks for all of the info! I love the channel so far, I have a question though. Im doing a cam swap on a 2017 L83 silverado and installed a limiter in the sprocket. The truck was already tuned so the guy is taking it back to the shop that originally tuned it to have the tune adjusted for the new cam. Will the truck be alright to start and run if the vvt settings have not been messed with since it has the limiter in the sprocket? I was debating on leaving the cam magnet in the front cover unplugged until he gets it tuned because i wasn't sure if it would cause problems or not. I know its not gonna run right but he wants to drive it to the tuner after the swap. Any info on that would be awesome!

      Do you have the ability to tune it? You could easily kill the cam retard enough to keep it within the limit of the limiter. Probably won't hurt anything if you can't, it just will probably throw some codes because it can't time as far as it wants

    @travispeoples 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Aren't you opposite on what the VVT system is doing? You stated that the VVT is a system that allows you to advance the camshaft up to a certain amount of degrees...? Then you stated that it's primary purpose was is for emissions...? It's my understanding that the VVT is designed to broaden the Torque curve of the motor by retarding the cam for upper rpm power. The VVT cams have additional advance ground into them for low end power and the phaser retards the cam for upper rpm power so the end result is a wide flat torque curve... right?

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is parked at full advance, I mistakenly said the wrong thing there. And while it can be retarded to create additional cylinder pressure for more down low power, it's more for emissions, you can see that based on the tables and where it does the most changes is in the cruising areas on most platforms. It also crates a layer of complication when tuning that generally is easier is you simplify the adjustments.

    • @Maverick09171
      @Maverick09171 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goat Rope Garage that’s not correct. Advanced cam timing down low is what “creates additional cylinder pressure” ie. Makes more power.

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, but that is not the primary purpose

    • @Maverick09171
      @Maverick09171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Goat Rope Garage what do you mean “primary purpose”? The purpose is to provide the best of all worlds. 1. Low pumping loss at low load (by retarding). 2. Good torque at low engine speed and high load (by advance) 3. Good horsepower at high engine speed (by retarding).

    VVT : more overlap -> engine breathe better at high speed but poor performance at low speed (better for higher rpm), less valve overlap: more torque at low speed but low high speed performance as the engine can't scavenge the exhaust gasses with high rpm. So why disable valve timing, when you can stress this value more having a more aggressive toque at low speed as an engine that breath at full rpm? Don't bother with math with a fixed valve timing makes thing easier with less headache, but not as best as using advance technology to get both of the benefits. VVT was probably invented for the emissions purpose, that doesn't mean that if you know how to play with those values, you can have high torque AND high speed breathing engine all together, a surely better choice that giving up one of the two, disabling the VVT

    • @GoatRopeGarage

    My truck is kinda a dog down below 3,200 but then it feels like a power band after that. And on the freeway at 75 (1800 rpm) it doesnt pull hills great in 6th but 5th is good. I wanted to tune the vvt but didnt wanna do it wrong. Anyway to tune it to help down low 1,500-3,000rpm? Or just do a full cam swap?

      Probably not, this is more about simplifying or doing away with VVT, it wouldn't hurt to try some of these tips as VVT is an economy thing more than a power thing. You have any current mods on your truck? There are a couple of basic things you can do to a stock truck to make it peppier.

    Sorry to question you.. but do you have dyno proof that the vvt is killing low end horsepower? I was always told vvt helped low end power.

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, but I've helped tune cars this week alone that the owners complained about it feeling like power was flat, had them assist the VVT to not retard the cam so much and it made a huge difference for both. No need to apologize for questioning here, but if you have VVT it's easy enough to dial the retard down and see if it makes a difference on your platform.

    • @DirtGearTv

      You're correct VVT was designed to give broader power band over a wider RPM range. There are some valid reasons to disable, simplicity of tuning is probably the top oned, adding power is not one of those reasons

      Goat Rope Garage what do you mean it doesn’t do much? Your clip at 3:25 shows it retarding the cam by 9 degrees. I think Hondaboi (🤦‍♂️) is saying he zeroed the table completely. If so that’s gonna kill peak hp because the cam is going to be advanced 7 degrees (at park). It needs to be restarted to breathe up top.

      Because people don't understand it, especially the older generation. It's adding complexity that most reject. I have to really explain these concepts to a lot of my customers, and eventually 99% to get it. If it was up to me every engine would have some k8nd if variable cam timing. My Supra doubles its torque at the 3000-4000rpm range with vvt. There is some incorrect info in this video but overall it's decent.

    Why would one get rid of VVT on an an LS engine? I understand deleting DOD/AFM completely, but taking VVT out leaves power on the table when tuning, unless one can not tune the vvt system. Deleting the DOD/AFM and keeping the VVT is the best way to GO.

    • @GoatRopeGarage
      @GoatRopeGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a high lift cam you will run your valves into your pistons. And VVT as it is from the factory doesn't make power, I've proven that in the real world and even did a video on it showing slower 1/4 mile times back to back on a VVT vs non-VVT tune with the factory cam. Also might be why it isn't on the LS7. It's a fuel efficiency gimmick on a push rod V8 and no one has proven otherwise yet.

      @@GoatRopeGarage, yes, but a cam phaser like you said can help. I have deleted all of my DOD crap and kept the VVT in my GEN5 Camaro. I run a TSP VVT 3.2 cam in my car with a duration of 231, 243 and lift of 649, 629. I have been runing it for over 2 years with no issues. My car is faster than my buddies VVT/DOD delete and which has about same cam specs, just a little more duration and lower lift on the exhaust side. My car is vert and is also heavier than his normal top. I believe that the torque curve and power band that the VVT system provides is much better than his non VVT system. My buddy's car also has more power on paper. Saying to take VVT out is kind of misleading, just sayin.
