Me too. Helpful videos like this are the reason why I decided to start a TH-cam channel. Other TH-cam videos have helped me out a ton over the years so I decided it was about time that I gave back to the community. I'm glad you found this video helpful!
Thanks for a great video. instead of a new cable, I picked up a micro-USB to USB-C adapter (with a 56K resistor). It fits perfectly in the opening, just tight enough to prevent the plug from moving down when the phone is docked repeatedly.
+Philip Chou I thought about that, but the micro-USB to USB-C adapters I bought didn't fit. I also was concerned about the plug dropping down over time. Although, it would be easy enough to push it back up or hot glue it to hold it in place.
Yeah, there is a risk that the microusb cable will become disconnected from the adapter. The micro USB to USB-C adapter that I got that fits perfectly in the housing (and includes a 56K resistor) is the Anker Model B8174 USB C adapter.
WHAT! I didn’t even know a dock there existed! 😮 I searched the web and couldn’t find a place to buy it… Can you provide information on how to get that? Tx
Just finished this retrofit with a new cable that appeared on Amazon last week: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6320VZ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Almost the same 90deg ends as the original except with the Type C end. Had to whittle it down some for a secure fit. Funny when I ordered my Pixel a few weeks ago I checked out this video but didn't order the cable then as I couldn't find one with the correct 90deg ends. 2 days ago I revisited Amazon and found this 2-pack comes with 1 right and 1 left and completes the retrofit identical to original. Seller says it is high quality with 56k resistor.
+showkit2 awesome, thanks for the tip about the new cable! I might swap mine out for it. Although, I hardly ever notice the current cable as it is. But your suggested cable will provide a cleaner look which I would prefer.
+Jonathan Parham no, unfortunately Tesla doesn't support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. I was a little bummed when I found that out too. However, the Tesla infotainment system is by far the best in the industry. It uses Google Maps for the locations so you can use voice search on the steering wheel, and it'll find the place that you to go. The one complaint is that the actual turn by turn directions aren't provided by Google, they're through another Navigation company. So the routing around traffic isn't as good as Google Maps.
Hm how do you like the phone dock design in general? I dislike that tesla is not adding apple carplay, just because that would silence the phone and we don't have to manually, while it is still ringing for a call.
+Ruben Kelevra I agree that it would be nice if Tesla added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Although, Tesla's infotainment system is by far the best available. I do like that I can "blind holster" my phone with the Tesla dock. It's a little thing, but it's very convenient.
+Markus Stampfli ,no this won't give you fast charging if you plug into the USB port. However, you can plug into the cigarette lighter with a fast charge capable car charger, and route the cable the same way. If you're going that route, I'd recommend a car charger that just has the USB plug instead of the coiled cable.
You mentioned micro USB and lightning at the beginning. Does Tesla install the micro USB or lightning as part of the delivery. That is how do they know what type of phone you have? Or is this an after delivery option? I have a new Model X on order and use the Galaxy S8 which is USB-C and will have to update.
If you get the premium upgrade package, it comes with the phone dock. Your delivery specialist will usually ask what type of phone you have and install the USB cable for you before you take delivery. I think Tesla now offers a USB-C cable option. If you don't have the Premium Upgrade Package, you can buy the phone dock from the Tesla store separately.
I just confirmed, Tesla now lists all 3 phone connector options (micro USB, iPhone lightning, and USB-C). You can order it directly from Tesla's website. shop.tesla.com/us/en/product/vehicle-accessories/model-s_x-quick-connection-phone-dock.html
Brilliant solution. Now, if the engineers can solve the phone flying loose when I 'launch'. ;^) Those wings don't hold my droid in place, plus, they pop loose when I try to close the door. TY!
Teslas have Bluetooth for connecting to your phone to play music. I've never tried playing it through USB, but I think it should work because you can play music off of a USB flash drive. Teslas do not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but the Tesla system is pretty good so I don't think those are necessary.
Problem is, Bluetooth isn't as good quality. I was told the only way to pull this off is USB stick which is crazy and an issue with folders, voice command for selecting music, etc. (shocked)
My daughter was playing Spotify songs off her phone through bluetooth and that worked just fine, controlling Spotify on her phone through the car interface, getting album art correctly and everything. Not sure what "quality" has to do with it though. Bluetooth 3.0 has what, 24Mbit/s speed? Even 2Mb/s would be fine for audio no?
Great video - one thing you might want to consider down the road to clean up your install is to get this little 90 degree left angle USB extension cable. Then it will look almost identical to the old factory cable. All the extra cabling should tuck neatly under the console (including the female connection on the jumper cable). www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AQNX2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
+Dream Elysium Entertainment unfortunately, Google still hasn't gone to wireless charging with their Pixel line of phones. I have heard of some people installing wireless charging stations in the phone dock, but I haven't done it myself since I have a Pixel2.
+Jerry Wang yeah, but the problem with most USB C adapters is they don't fit tight enough on the micro USB plug and loose enough on the USB C side. So sometimes when you try to unplug your phone, the adapter sticks into your phone. I believe Tesla now offers a USB C version of this cable which solves the problem completely.
The Nerdy Engineer True, I use some electrical tape to bond them together. Changing the whole assembly is definitely the cleaner way to do. Way too much effort IMO, so went with the easy way
The Nerdy Engineer When I changed to HTC10, I also have the same problem of USB C, got like 20 connectors from huawei (that supports otg and stuff), and just taped them to all my existing cords. Problem solved lul Pretty cheap, and pretty low footprint (the connector itself is pretty small)
cool. this is why i love youtube - people helping each other with these little problems. thx for creating this video

Samsung has a micro usb b to type c adapter in the s8,s8+, and note8 box

Thank you for this!! Very useful!
You're welcome! I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Thanks Man, you sorted my problem for me. Thumbs up!

Did you have to shave the cable at all, or did it fit?
Very helpful. Does Android auto work with Model X Tesla. be nice to have trips already saved in google maps go right to the dash of the Tesla

copy that thanks
That worked. Thanks bro
Do you know how to remove that "rotating door"?
It's pretty hard to remove from what I've read. I think you have to take the center console apart. It's better to just tilt the door.
Hm how do you like the phone dock design in general? I dislike that tesla is not adding apple carplay, just because that would silence the phone and we don't have to manually, while it is still ringing for a call.

I've head Volvo got a nice one too in the latest XC90 / V90 / S90 models ... :)
Do you achieve fast charging with this setup?

Thanks. After watching your video on it, I decided not to order the premium upgrade. When I get the car in June or July I will order the phone dock.

Thanks. This will be on my early shopping list when I get the car. Let me know if you have a referral link I should use.

OK I just read one cannot plug their iPhone into the car to get access to its music library. That can't be true?
Teslas have Bluetooth for connecting to your phone to play music. I've never tried playing it through USB, but I think it should work because you can play music off of a USB flash drive. Hey neat video do you have your link for the Tesla referral program anywhere?
Yes, thanks for the reminder. I added it to the video description. www.tesla.com/referral/brett9955
Well done video!
+Norman Hirsch thanks!
😀👍
What about wireless charging? I hear some cars are coming with it nowadays.
+Dream Elysium Entertainment unfortunately, Google still hasn't gone to wireless charging with their Pixel line of phones. I have heard of some people installing wireless charging stations in the phone dock, but I haven't done it myself since I have a Pixel2.
Or, you could just use a female usb mirco b to male usb c adapter...
Much simpler
+Jerry Wang yeah, but the problem with most USB C adapters is they don't fit tight enough on the micro USB plug and loose enough on the USB C side. So sometimes when you try to unplug your phone, the adapter sticks into your phone. I believe Tesla now offers a USB C version of this cable which solves the problem completely.
The Nerdy Engineer True, I use some electrical tape to bond them together. Changing the whole assembly is definitely the cleaner way to do.
Way too much effort IMO, so went with the easy way
+Jerry Wang ahh, I wasn't smart enough to think of using electrical tape! Good idea!
The Nerdy Engineer When I changed to HTC10, I also have the same problem of USB C, got like 20 connectors from huawei (that supports otg and stuff), and just taped them to all my existing cords. Problem solved lul
