I had this exact conversation with my sheriff about 2 minutes ago! My county has 2 paid deputies and 4 reserves. Around 5,500 people and 775 square miles. 2 of the 7 towns in my county have local police departments. We purchased 2 used cruisers last year, but will be forced to let them go back because the County commissioners cannot seem to find the funding for them, as well as fuel! That’s right! Zero dollars are allocated for fuel! These same commissioners continue to lease new road graders, loaders, semi trucks and have more than enough workers to go around! It cost money to “Protect & Serve” but I promise it’s going to cost us a Hell of a lot more because they don’t have enough gas to catch a call! It’s pretty sad that county commissioners get to decide the budget for the sheriff department! Especially since most of them aren’t even smart enough to maintain a gravel road!
Awe, you can't get rich extorting people on the road now? What a fucking crying shame... What county did you say you worked for? I know a guy who needs an unwatched road way so he can make his deliveries on time.

I once met a county representative at a local function/festival. She was shaking hands, doing the whole thing. She approached me with a smile. Side note: I don’t do politics. She starts her spiel with me and I stop her. I say “if I came to a meeting, and asked for an accounting of my tax dollars, what could I expect?” She looked lost. I said “the taxes we pay to the county, and city. Where do they go? What do they get spent on?” She started to say it gets split up between various utilities and services. I stopped her and said “what if I, a taxpayer in your district, want a receipt for the money I’ve spent on the taxes in this county? I want to see where the government has decided to allocate my money, that I worked to earn. How much is spent on schools? Road maintenance? Police departments? Put in the pockets of the people we elected to spend that money on making our county better each day, and safer each day.” She was speechless. This is what should be happening. The taxpayer demanding an account of the taxes we pay. We have to account for what we spend when the IRS decides to audit us. It’s time to audit those WE put in place by electing them.
I have a better story. I was at a benefit dance for Special Olympics and there was a Democrat County Council woman campaigning for re-election there. Bro, they have no money for the raises. Like do you guys think money grows on trees? If they want to provide them the resources they need to adequately pay them, then they will need to raise taxes. Are you okay with your taxes to be raised then?
Every police department of America is completely over funded, all you have to do is look around. Every time there’s any sort of incident there’s 50 cop cars there with a bunch of guys just standing around.
People need to realize how hard it is to get seasoned police, fire, paramedic, and other people in such small towns. Most people want to live in larger areas, have services, etc. Younger people often want to have families -- so they need to convince their wife to stay there and their kids to do the small-town life. So, when you get someone willing to stay... don't mess it up. When you have a police or other department with 5 to 10 people, losing one or two is devastating -- when you factor in shifts, holidays, injuries, sick days, etc. and still need two or three on duty at any time.
One thing very common in each of these. The Mayor's and town councils never offer to cut their own pay. Just the PD FB and other first responders. Never their own.
That’s because cutting salaries for the year for politicians….is an extra month at best. If there’s no money, there’s no money. The police are resorting to mafia strong arm tactics.

Firefighters are one thing, but you only need but so much police presence in a small, rural town, especially in Texas where pretty much everyone carries.
Firefighters are like insurances, no one needs them until you do but when you have them available it feels good and blessed you have them except you don’t pay hundreds to thousands of dollars a year for firefighters

it actually is a budget decision since for years people kept being told they there wasn't enough money for social and community services for things like mental health, people got tired of hearing it and wanted the money to come from somewhere. Defund isn't the best phrasing, reallocating excess police funds is more like it.
I don't live in Blue Mound but I live very close. It is an area on the rise. If they need to cut funding to the police force it's not because they don't have funds. It is because they misappropriated or mismanaged the funds they have.

In the time since he has quit I have had to call bluemound police on two different occasions. On both occasions I never heard back from an officer and never seen one patrol the area after I called. Still to this day you can drive by Blue mound Police department and see every one of their police vehicles sitting in the driveway they have a total of six. However the cities water department is completely funded to the point to where they ticket property owners for the most mundane things. For things like a yard being completely mowed and one small patch of weed you will get a ticket. Yet not even 150 ft from the police station of Blue mound there is a property owner that has a literal junkyard in their front yard on the main road and has never once been ticketed. The mayor makes $1,800 a month. The council members are paid $50 per meeting. The same people complaining about this are the exact same people who complain about “big government and their out of control spending.” So here you have a small, local government, trying to avoid taking on debt or raising taxes, and they cut spending to do so. The largest expenditure is the police force and it’s not even close. If you need to decrease the budget, you have to decrease what you spend money on and if the vast majority of your money goes to the police force, then you are going to have to decrease what you spend on the police force. But here’s the real story. These municipalities are finding out that they’ve been spending way too much money on police budgets and that more money on police departments doesn’t make anyone safer, or prevent crime. Once you’ve established that the police will respond to a crime, adding more and more police, and spending more and more money, doesn’t do anything to prevent crime. There’s decades worth of research that shows that.
The problems facing many communities especially small ones is keeping up with ever increasing budgets and less money. This happened where I once lived. The village could not keep their law enforcement maintained do to the lack of revenue with many businesses shuddered and depressed the town just couldn't afford it any longer not that they didn't want the police dept, they did, but the writing was on the wall.

I know nothing about Blue Mound. However, budget cuts are not the same thing as "defunding". If a city lacks revenue, budgets must be cut. "Defunding" is political decision, not a budget decision.
it actually is a budget decision since for years people kept being told they there wasn't enough money for social and community services for things like mental health, people got tired of hearing it and wanted the money to come from somewhere. Defund isn't the best phrasing, reallocating excess police funds is more like it.
they can cut money else where. if they dont pay the police what they deserve they will quit, then who you gonna call? Ghost Busters???
I don't live in Blue Mound but I live very close. It is an area on the rise. If they need to cut funding to the police force it's not because they don't have funds. It is because they misappropriated or mismanaged the funds they have.
@JackReacheround We've seen what's happened in Democrat run shit-holes like California, NYC, Chicago, Austin, etc, where police have been defunded and money "reallocated for social services." I work from home I am absolutely certain that no police officer has patrolled bluemound for that. Period of 2 months.
In the last year since the day he quit we may be see a Blue mound officer patrolling once a week for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Having said that Blue mound is not a crime ridden town.
It's any extremely small town with only three main roads.
For a mayor to be making well over $160,000 a year and the police chief only making $85,000 a year I think it's very clear where the issue lies.
Come to find out they have a family member on the board of Blue mound.
It's very clear that the board needs to be removed especially the mayor.
The council needs to be careful of what they wish for.
Politicians always take care of themselves.. And blame others for their bad decisions.. A part time political position should be paid by the hour on the job..As always "You get what you vote for".
less than 2500 people. The size of a single subdivision. they have a miniscule budget. its not a defund the police issue. They have to raise taxes to fund public services. If the citizens want a police force, they have to pay for a police force. There is little retail commerce there for sales tax revenue. bad situation all around. The concept of mini suburban towns like this is to have their own school district. Unfortunately the economics of city development and fiscal solvency requires a mix of high value homes and vibrant retail commerce.
Mini-suburb, cracks me up. Blue Mound has been a little town with a little foot print since the 50s. Every square inch around it was swallowed up by Ft Worth yrs ago.
Yup and the sad part is I bet everyone on that council got raises and better petitions
