- Why even release more games when we reached the peak so long ago? Taking the formula of Saints Row 1 and perfecting it, Saints Row 2 is certainly the greatest "GTA Clone" that was ever produced. Calling it a clone of Grand Theft Auto isn't really fair, but that is its genre. Take a walk with me through this game in this retrospective, playthrough, generally hilarious adventure with "Playa" of the Saints.

I love how in this game the NPCs are made via the character creator, so NPCs and the player character actually look like they belong to the same world.
Still a downgrade compared to sr1 character models

I really love how Saints Row 2 is a game about the protagonist becoming *the* villain. As you progress the character's deeds become more and more brutal and villainous and you put more innocent people into harm's way.

Carlos death is still a high point in gaming for me. Here you have a game that is a goddamn parody of GTA, who takes every chance to make a joke about litteraly anything, yet Carlos death scene is dead serious. No jokes, no funny effects, just the rain, Carlos half dead body, The Boss panicking and that somber feeling of knowing that there's no way to save him. Carlos, the guy who helped us bust out of prison, who we took under our wing and who was loyal to the end, was now lying there, in pain, and as a last sign of respect, The Boss gives Carlos a last goodbye, before ending his suffering.
Games today rarely get the emotional part right to begin with, yet this goddamn masterpiece nails it when it's in a genre that is quite litteraly the opposite of that.
It was still stupid though. He tries to break the chain with his hands, fails and then kills Carlos with a gun. He could've easily shot the chain and taken him to the hospital

@@mitty9109 Beside the fact that shooting the chain is a hell of a lot harder to do then you think, the fact you mention a hospital doesn't make sense. Both Carlos and The Boss is KNOWN criminals... Go to a hospital and Carlos goes to jail again, not to mention that The Boss would also be wanted. Thirdly, look at Carlos... He's been fucking dragged by a car on asphalt for at least 10-20 mins. The fact that he isn't dead yet is a miracle. There was no saving him as he only had a short time to live, while also in extreme pain. Carlos was already dead at that point.

This is by far the best game in the series. It managed to balance both really funny humour and really serious moments. Every game after that lost the ability to juggle the two genres and just doubled down on being goofy.
It’s really sad to see what it has become when i saw gameplays/reviews of the new saints row I couldn’t believe how bad it was

I have to wonder if the "sneak into the casino, cause a blackout, rob them" thing was a dig at Rockstar since that is basically the plot of the heist in San Andreas that came out a couple years before this game.
Now that i think about it.... You could be right! They also robbed a casino in SA.
Also SR2 Commercial takes a dig at GTA IV. "Would you rather, play bowling, or shoot sewage at pedestrians?"
I remembered being really excited for the continuation of the Ultor storyline with Dex as the main villian, shame they never continued that

@ChrisBarnett222 it’s a 3rd person open world game about forming a resistance on mars to free mars from earths colonial control. The game features physics destruction. Each building can pretty much be destroyed in a realistic manner. Very cool game tbh
Sr2 is one of those rare gems. It leaned into the silly yet still managed to have some serious hard hitting moments. Definitely well written.

Seeing this after Volition was just aglomerated into Gearbox makes me kind of nostalgic. I know Volition was only a shadow of its former self, exhibit A: the latest Saints Row game, but still, makes me miss when the industry could release these sorts of games. We definitely will not see another game with that tone in the AAA gaming industry for a long time I'm afraid.

I like the customization, the wanted level system, the fun cheats, the environmental NPCs, lots of interiors, & ect.
I love the way Matto and his editors edit his playthroughs. They take out all the unnecessary parts, leave us with just the core gameplay, and for 99.9% it's presented as is, but then from time to time they insert memes that are actually funny.
