I get what you mean, but I think the student loans is just an exaggerated joke that college can be too expensive. The way Austin describes it. It may have been, but being tied to the title of Saints Row made many people ( myself included) really not like it. The amount of negativity in the comments of their announcement for the larping DLC truly showed people were disappointed and most probably never gave it a shot. I never bought any of the DLC just because the base game got too boring for me and started to feel more like a chore to play then fun. With Austin's review he had a buddy, but for me it was all Solo which truly made the game terrible lol.
Here's an insane idea, why didn't they just made this a prequel? Getting to see Julius, King and maybe a few other characters in their early years, show the start of the Saints (which is already what this game sorta tried to do), if they really wanted to go back to basics, that was a perfect solution
You know that the people there hated the past games right? You're putting expectations on people who do not like those games and have full faith in the reboot.
@@nikolasferreira3247 Actually that was the original intention: a prequel focusing on Benjamin King and Julius Little, which would end with playa surviving the blown up yatch and swearing revenge. Then it Playa would travel to Japan to confront whoever tried to kill him, yes it WAS NOT Julius in the original pitch.
My biggest problem with this game is the fact that most of the activities play exactly the same. There's only so many times I can drive somewhere, shoot a few guys, steal a car and drive it back to one of my businesses.
Crime Scene Cleanup: Okay, cool, do I get to wipe up blood and help hide evidence? Nope, just go hide this car for us. Let's Pretend Heists: Do I get to stealth through places and steal cool treasures? Nope. Getaway driver!
Its nice to see that the Volition sign is still up in town. Sucks what happened because cool people worked on the game but, overhead stuff got involved.

It will always be cool how you play a game that was publicly shit on and still give an honest opinion on it. You even came out ok with it. I will always applaud you for that. Always love these.
As much as i hate to say it, Volition DESERVED to be shut down for making SR 2022! And not because it's the worst game ever, it really isn't, but the fact that everyone and their dog told Volition for literal years that what they were making was a mistake and would sell like crap, they decided to not only ignore ANY constructive criticism from longterm fans, but activly mocked and antagonized fans! The game itself isn't the worst thing i have played (i played Ride To Hell: Retribution...), but for me at least it was the fact that the company despised not only the franchise at this point, but the fans as well that got to me. If you activly avoid making a product that people would like to buy, on top of telling customers that they are wrong to like your old products, you deserve to go out of business...
And it seems to be a trend since 2020. Funny how they are becoming more and more anti-consumer while having the gall to demand customers upfront payment. Yes, not loyalty, MONEY after spouting liberal ideologies.
That's how I felt. The community character designs were fun, I liked creating my custom character and the gameplay was solid. I liked how they expanded all the open world tasks for finding hidden things or completing little side quests. I agree 100% that the dialog and characters are absolutely cringe-worthy, but there's a totally solid game underneath it.
Saints Row 4 was my first of the series . I fell in love with it at the beginning "how long until the helicopter is here?!" "About 3 or 4 waves of generic bad guys!"
The 100% vids are fun with how it checks out stuff most would probably just have ignored. And the time consuming aspect of making the vids is definitely understandable. It's not necessarily all that fun having to sift through around 100 hours of footage to get things cut down like you'd like. I've been trying to learn how to be efficient at doing so and it feels like it's taking forever to get done.
It's tragic because with the suits misunderstanding what the current world is like and toning the game down so much, it just became forgettable and annoying. I feel like people are desperate for a game that lets you cut loose and go nuts again, one that isn't taking itself too seriously (or at least not always) and letting you have the fun any way you want.
Lowkey one of the best parts of Austin's videos is going in with the assurance that he won't mispronounce every 15th word like most modern TH-camrs. #iykyk #hellisotherppl #👌
The problem with the funny larp scene of the guy being shot over and over is that's it's stolen from an old cheesy movie. They had to steal something to in order to get something funny into the game. th-cam.com/video/rxZXptGpXng/w-d-xo.html
Ironically, I disliked it for a somewhat opposite reason. They don't have enough seriousness to counter-balance the wacky. The wacky needs to exist in a serious world to have any impact. You kind of implied this with some of the SR2 execution clips, but I think extra wacky you want would just exacerbate the issue and lead to more unfunny humor.
Like you I picked up the game for really cheap on a steam sale. The pacing feels sluggish at times which really really takes me out of the moment. The thing that really kills the game for me most is the gunplay. Weapons do ok damage but the accuracy is so slow that everything feels like a shotgun and makes even basic enemies feel spongy which only makes playing feel more like a chore. I will probably still finish the game but I won't be achievement hunting. It's not the worst game now but it's not a great game by any measure.
I was a big fan of the original SR series. Was pretty hyped when this game was announced. Immediately disappointed by the gameplay footage I saw around launch and wrote it off. It's been sitting in my library untouched since they gave it out free on PS and will more than likely always stay that way, lol. RIP Volition.... I guess?
Saints row 1 would have been the way to reboot where they use the alternate ending where Julius is running through the alley to set up a second saints row 2 which has all the the characters and where Lyn is still alive in a wheelchair maybe and Donnie comes back to Lyn to take care of of her and tune the saints cars, this is where a reboot should have gone like a 1&2 continuous story spanning the equivalent of the original 1 & 2
@@theobell2002 don't get me wrong, 1 was very fun IMO. It was just sooo buggy and had a lot of repetitive stuff. Maybe I'd say 1 is about the same as 4 and GOOH is the worst though.

Nice to hear this game's not the shitstorm everyone made it out to be. Best wishes to the Volition devs, hope they continue to create more cool stuff.
I have to disagree, the game, to me, is very deserving of the hate considering the series it spawned from. It is one of those times where people calling it an insult to the series are not exaggerating. It baffled me what they tried to pass off as a Saints Row game.
@@channel45853 No it doesn't seem to succeed as a Saints Row game. The tone missed the mark incredibly hard. But as its own thing, to a gamer unacquainted with the other titles, seems like a pretty passable 6 or 7 outta 10 though. It's fine. If a sequel gets made, hopefully the ridiculous factor gets cranked up and they hire better writers.
When me, my mother, and her BF watched a very mid movie, I told him jokingly "it was woke so I don't have to explain anything else" to flip his narrative onto him, and he looked at me weirdly. I haven't seen him going on a tantrum for something being woke for a long while.
The worst part is while playing through this shitfest it had so many sparks of a good game, but nothing to show for it. That whole final mission in my eyes is a clear sign they had great ambitions. The side quest that's just you driving around and looking at historical sites and landmarks gives the world a great deal of character and is fun to do because the driving feels good. Going in I expected the gunplay to be way worse than it is. Does it feel like I'm never doing enough damage to people? Yes absolutely. Honestly I want to get hired on to lead a project to actually finish this game. It's so very clear that crunch is what ruined it and sadly it means we'll never see another saints row.
I've had this in my watch later list for months, because I knew I was gunna get around to playing it myself one day. Well, fresh off completing it, and it wasn't nearly as awful as I thought it was going to be! Your points are spot on, though, as always!

Dont kill me, but i am enjoying this game and i will rant about it on its defense. I dont feel a big change from this one compared to Saints Row 3 & 4. We went from a gang boss, to working with the feds, to being president, to being the savior of our planet after fighting aliens. We had super powers in a simulation that were then put into a suit in real life to use those powers. The franchise was ridiculous and this continues it. 1 thing i noticed people fail to mention is that they ALL have criminal backgrounds (except Elijah as far as i can tell besides the little heists they do to pay rent). The boss is known to be a jack of all trades (mainly a murder machine as he puts it), Neenah is an expert mechanic and driver afiliated with Los Panteros, and Kevin is a DJ affiliated with The Idols. Idk if he does crime for them too, but he does pull off crimes with the rest of the group. They dont just randomly decide to start a gang. They decide to start one after losing interest in their gang, being kicked out of it, and you, as the boss, losing your job as a hired gunman because you dont play by the rules. Yes its ridiculous that they all cant pay rent and are dirt poor, especially since theyre in a gang, but i found it as an overly exaggerated joke to how college tuition can be so damn expensive. Also the boss feels exactly like the old boss to me. Ive seen someone make the goofiest looking character and chose a modified female country voice to show how bad the boss was. Like dude, YOU MADE them bad, not the studio. And dont even get me started on the LARPing missions, i love them. Granted i have not played this franchise in years, but i feel like I'm playing Saints Row and not a bad copy of it. Yes even in 2024 there are still many bugs and yes, some things could be better. But im mainly here to defend that its not incredibly far off from Saint 3 + 4 and that the characters all do have motivations. There are funny moments, there are silly moments. Im not that deep into the game yet so i may change my mind about the characters, but so far theyre all great to me. Each individually have their serious moments and funny moments. I got it for free from PSN Plus, if you did too or can get it for cheap, definitely check it out. But yes, i do feel bad for anyone who has paid $60+ for this game because again, even now there is still a few issues with it
One day, I’d like to buy the rights to Saints Row, and give us what we want, a dark crime thriller with funny shenanigans and choice in origin stories; plus, multiple endings like 3 because there will be multiple ways to complete missions…
@@thientuongnguyen2564 Saints Row 2 is superior, we need a dark thriller gang epic with comedic moments where we start the Saints to rival a bigger threat but in the end choose if we become as bad or worse because in the end we’re a gang of psychopaths 😅

One of the big reasons the DLC feels so different, and specifically like Borderlands, is because it was made by Gearbox. In part at least. By that point, Volition was merged with Gearbox. So they had that influence.
The first two games may not be as serious as something like gta and they know how to have a lot of fun, the biggest difference is is from saints row 3 onward it jus too whacky be taken seriously when it is taking itself seriously saints row three had a few moments where I could rly take it seriously but it was a downward spiral from there
Honestly Austin, I look forward to your videos because they're just the right length and just the right amount of depth. You have a great talent for balancing all the aspects needed for a fun, engaging video. Love your work! Hot take, the first Saints Row game is the best imo. I have massive nostalgia for that fucking game. Saints row 2 is also a great game and I wish they would have stayed with that style instead of where they went with 3,4 and 2022. Keep up the great work homeboy!
i did that too, i was entertained mostly. its an average game but it has a lot of silly ideas that make it stand out a bit more. what really killed it, is the censorship and the political ideologies it shouldn't have relied on.
Because somehow, Jane Austin knew about Emperor Zinger's time travel shite yet stated it can only went as afar back as the moment Earth got vaporized? What a load of crap.
24:08 is DEFINITELY a reference to the infamous death scene from a 1973 Turkish movie called Karate Girl. You can find it on TH-cam called something like "Worst death scene ever". It was a popular viral video in early 2010s.
A lot of the writing sounds like they decided they wanted to copy the absurdity of Saint’s Row the Third, then ended up deciding the rest of it should be the most bland, uninspired thing to balance it out. Which has me thinking. Were they originally making a non-SR game before corporate made it about SR? Is that why they draw from the divisive SR3 (that has a lot of ports) rather than the pretty universally loved SR2 (that has no ports)?
Apparently the game was originally going to be more in line with what fans wanted but Deep Silver executives didn't like it and dictates a lot of the direction the final product went in. Deep Silver has been a notoriously difficult publisher l to work with as far back as after Dead Island Riptide came out at least.
HONESTLY, it looks like they took to Watch Dogs 2 and reworked it into a Saints Row title....Smashing together 2 puzzle peices which cannot and should not go together.
*If you didn't want it to be compared to other Saints Row games, probably don't need it after a established franchise.* That's not hard to understand. IP riding. Common sense. It's cute to play the "middle ground" but the mindset of treating it as anything but "Saints Row" is leaving your brain at the door yet wanting to be the smartest guy in the room. (70$ on release btw)😅 If you don't want your generic fighting game with no flying, no Ki blast, no transformations, to get a bunch of flack for EXISTING,...... probablyyyyy shouldn't call it "Dragon Ball Z"🫠 oh it's a decent game? Cool. Is it a good "Dragon Ball Z" game? Hellllll No. I feel as though that's the IMPORTANT part but that's just me. Pardon everyone who had expectations for an Empire of an IP
Epic gave this game for free last christmas and I enjoyed it a lot. The tone compared with other games is different, not so wacky, but it has its points.
one of the biggest mistakes you can ever do is create something with the expectation that it'll get sequels. Set up for a possible sequel, sure go for it but the thing itself should be a complete package first and foremost. Obviously it's impossible to really know what the plan was but the super slow start does feel like it's setting up for a reboot series. It just dominoes the whole story into feeling very bland. Even if they wanted to do an origin story they should've picked the pace up.
I don't think the expectation of a sequel is a bad thing, but make sure the first game or book, or movie can stand on its own. Mass Effect was always planned as a trilogy yet Mass Effect 1 stands on its own. What we should be wondering, is how exactly Mass Effect 1 got acclaim and love while Mass Effect: Andromeda, a game made which is thought to be the first in a cancelled trilogy, failed and was hated.
@@kurisu7885 I don't know, I feel like that's more the fault of factors outside of the games rather than studios themselves. Like when a new open world game comes out and people start the GTA comparisons.

"I have a lot of ideas, not enough time."
God, if that ain't the biggest mood I've heard of, lol
Here's an insane idea, why didn't they just made this a prequel? Getting to see Julius, King and maybe a few other characters in their early years, show the start of the Saints (which is already what this game sorta tried to do), if they really wanted to go back to basics, that was a perfect solution
That would have been really cool. Could have had a Vice City aspect of being a period piece and going wild with it.
You know that the people there hated the past games right? You're putting expectations on people who do not like those games and have full faith in the reboot.

Then it Playa would travel to Japan to confront whoever tried to kill him, yes it WAS NOT Julius in the original pitch.
Thank you for your sacrifice.
They made some of my favorites ever. One of the biggest blows to gaming imo.
Here's hoping that people from shutdown game studios get rehired.

If you ignore literally every aspect about the writing, it's kind of fun. The character customization and fun map were enough for me.
Character creator might be fun, but if the entire game is trash, what point is there really?
@@blok--head7472 Especially when you can download the character creator separately😂
Saints Row 4 was my first of the series . I fell in love with it at the beginning "how long until the helicopter is here?!"
"About 3 or 4 waves of generic bad guys!"
Matt being plugged in an Eruption video is dope. I enjoy both channels. Much success to you, Austin.
Very fitting dialogue, almost self reflecting. "You: *laughs with everyone*"
Ironically, I disliked it for a somewhat opposite reason. They don't have enough seriousness to counter-balance the wacky. The wacky needs to exist in a serious world to have any impact. You kind of implied this with some of the SR2 execution clips, but I think extra wacky you want would just exacerbate the issue and lead to more unfunny humor.
but humor is subjective
Like you I picked up the game for really cheap on a steam sale. The pacing feels sluggish at times which really really takes me out of the moment.
The thing that really kills the game for me most is the gunplay. Weapons do ok damage but the accuracy is so slow that everything feels like a shotgun and makes even basic enemies feel spongy which only makes playing feel more like a chore.
I will probably still finish the game but I won't be achievement hunting. It's not the worst game now but it's not a great game by any measure.
I literally got this game for free from Epic and I haven't even downloaded it.
I was a big fan of the original SR series. Was pretty hyped when this game was announced. Immediately disappointed by the gameplay footage I saw around launch and wrote it off.
It's been sitting in my library untouched since they gave it out free on PS and will more than likely always stay that way, lol.

It's fine.

And people still prefer Shits Row 3 over 2 when this Shits Row '22 was designed from that turd game.

To be honest bro we don't need any more videos about Suicide squad or Avatar.
Saints row 2 was the best one they ever made
24:08 is DEFINITELY a reference to the infamous death scene from a 1973 Turkish movie called Karate Girl.
It's like how 1998 Godzilla is a good kaiju movie but misses the mark as a Godzilla movie.

If you don't want your generic fighting game with no flying, no Ki blast, no transformations, to get a bunch of flack for EXISTING,...... probablyyyyy shouldn't call it "Dragon Ball Z"🫠 oh it's a decent game? A few of my friends treated me like I was crazy for wanting to maintain a positive attitude about this game. And I still feel positively about it now.
one of the biggest mistakes you can ever do is create something with the expectation that it'll get sequels.
100%.
Also don't market it as a killer of another series. "Halo Killer", "WoW Killer". I remember when so many games did that.
