Kia’s success story in Europe is remarkable. The brand has gone from being a budget choice to a front runner which is capable of taking on the best - and winning. It’s not just the mainstream brands which have to worry, as Kia is pinching customers from the prestige German brands too, especially in the electric car markets.
The biggest test of Kia’s new premium status is the EV9 - a vast, seven-seater long range SUV that has Land Rover, Audi and Mercedes in its sights. Has the Korean brand built another winner, or is the concept of a £65,000 Kia a step too far?
The EV9 starts at £64,995 and that's for the 201bhp rear-wheel drive model in 'Air' trim. It gets features such as 19-inch wheels, roof rails, seven seats - with the fronts having electric adjustment, and the front and second row are heated and ventilated - a heated steering wheel, an electric tailgate and an electronic rear view mirror. GT-Line with all-wheel drive is priced from £73,245 and adds fancier LED headlights, 21-inch wheels, sportier body styling and 'premium relaxation seats', while top-spec GT Line S models start at £75,995. Six-seater versions are the priciest of the lot, starting at a whopping £76,995.
A 76.1kWh battery is offered exclusively with the Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) Standard model, but this won't be offered in the UK initially. We will instead get the 99.8-kWh battery in both the Long Range and All Wheel Drive variants. In terms of range, Kia claims a WLTP figure of 349 miles for the Long Range and 313 for the AWD.
The EV9 comes with standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling the discharging of energy from the vehicle battery at up to 3.68 kW. Via the Kia Connect Store, customers will be able to add Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) compatibility to sell electricity back to the grid.
Efficiency will be an interesting one given the fact the EV9 weighs more than a Rolls Royce Cullinan, but we do know that it will have fast charging capability thanks to Kia’s 800 volt electrical system. This enables you to add around 60 miles of range into your battery in just six minutes using a super-fast 350 kW charger - usually found around the motorway network - making it easy to top up on longer journeys. If you’re charging at home, you can expect to take around 16 hours for a charge.
Join Ginny as she puts the new Kia EV9 through its paces for the first time. Is the EV9 on your wish list for next year? Is this a step too far for Kia? As always, we love to hear what you think, so get commenting below.

KIA has the benefit of a long history with 7 and 8 seaters. Loved my 2008 Grand Carnival (Sedona). Lots of room, comfort and 3.8L power. This EV9 looks like a carry-on of this, minus the petrol engine. If I had the money it would be top of my list. Well done KIA. Thank you for showing this on this channel.

    Nice first drive review.
As someone who has had a Niro EV for the past year, I absolutely would buy the EV9 over the others. Quality looks really good and we cannot forget that 7 year Kia warranty.
The Niro is a perfect size for my needs now but if you have a young family, the EV9 would be fantastic.

Love my (2023) Niro EV4. This one would be too big and too pricey for me, but delighted that KIA are continuing to forge ahead in the BEV market. First KIA I’ve owned and I’m a definite convert.

I’m an Audi eTron driver. Just had a look at the EV9 in a showroom. Seriously impressive car. Love the design. Not quite Audi materials, but it offers so much more - space, equipment, tech , charging speed etc and for less money too. Want to see the Ioniq 7 before I sign up to lease one as a replacement for the Audi.

I suppose it has exclusivity on its side at this stage anyway with no other electric 6 seaters other than the Model X, I'm guessing. To be fair, it looks great inside in my eyes. There is the EX 90 coming as well as the Ionic 7. EVs, especially with a 100kw battery, are still pricey, too

I know nobody cares... but the fake buttons are capacative buttons! Haptic feedback is simply the vibration you get when you press one. Just like your smartphone has a capacative screen which may or may not give haptic feedback depending on whether or not you turn on vibrations.
I'm not moaning at Electrifying, I love this channel... and in any case, all car channels are guilty of this.
Anyway, back to the video. I really like the EV9. I owed a 27kWh Soul and loved it. But the price of an EV9... I could get an ID Buzz for similar money. And I think if I ever did have £60k+ I probably wouldn't get an EV9.

We have an XC90 T8 PHEV and I've been thinking about when we need to replace it. I love the amount of space it has and it's a great car, but we are debating going fully electric with both cars. Whilst this would be a great option: I think it would be more sensible to get something smaller for our day to day and if absolutely necessary, hire a large car for longer trips (maybe once a year). It's a really tough one, but I want to try to follow the philosophy of getting a smaller car and keeping it for the lifespan of that car.

    • @Harhawink

You can not ignore the fact of when you get to drive this (go and do that). The absolute BOSS-feeling this car gives while driving is unmatched. I was lucky to drive this couple of days ago and a BMW iX and a Model X felt like a peasants car.

@@Harhawink lol I think if I wanted that feeling I’d have a G63! 😂 the Taycan is nice enough for my own use, with the family if needed, it’s more just a nice comfortable family day to day we want and I can’t decide between massive with lots of space and smaller more practical for Englands roads/car parks. Right up there with the e-niro, by the look of it. It’s challenging combustion cars in the area where they were previously supremely dominant. And there seems to be massive sales in this area with families with infant children. Easier to take the little ones in and out of, I imagine.

Really good review here, but it’s very expensive and it would be interesting to see what the actual range figures would be for the target “audience” ie a 4-5+ family on a fully laden journey, considering you can pick up a 7 seater Kodiaq for half the price, you could plant a lot of trees for £35K…

Looks better from inside imo; exterior won’t be to all tastes, and I’m struggling with that! You have to applaud Kia though for making this, and putting themselves in the 6-7 seater market with little realistic competition.

First thought huge, second odd looks but then I thought so is a G-Wagon but this half the price. So I had a second look at this 5 meter long monster. It’s practical and for the price you do get a lot including big cup holders for Ginny. The id buzz springs to mind as a alternative to carry a large family around but it’s limited range and lack of performance would make me think. Not for me but I think we will see a few of these around London and on the school run.

If you need the space to house extra people it's a pretty decent package and given the spec and interior it's... err hmm a decent price considering some of the options taking into account the decent warranty and reliability. But it is stull a huge amount of cash however you look at it. For airport or hotel executive taxis this should make a lot of sense ferrying the corporate VIP's around. It may never end up on my drive but I sure do like it. Many thanks Ginny for sharing.

It just seems that they get bigger and bigger. I know I'm in the minority and it seems a lot of people want the largest car they can afford regardless of whether they need the space or not. Once again we saw a road test review from What Car, that shows how it should be done. I for one am not that interested in Ginny's coffee mug! Rather more important is the look and feel of this car, which What Car sensibly points out, is not good enough at this price point. Its fine having testers like Nicola Hume who produces videos more for entertainment than as anything serious, but if you are going to be serious channel you really need to up your game!
